Honestly so glad this video came up. What killed the collab for me is exactly that: the quality issues! Mine once stopped over night! I thought the battery died already (what would have been strange) but then i engaged the pushers and bloody hell the chrono hand started to move. I then gave the watch a few gentle taps and since then it has been running. My Point is: If Omega decides to put their name on the dial, the watch has to be superior to Swatch quality. This is what a real collab should be, now it is just borrowing a Name and a design... Sad for the Brand ...

Omega had nothing to do with the moonswatch. They even did not like the idea and did anything they could to not make it happen. The Swatchgroup was stronger in the end unfortunately. Not sure if I second Adrians opinion that both Swatch and Omega needed that Hype- injection. Also I think it did not damage OMEGA, at least not in the long run.

My first watch at 6 years old was a Swatch and I absolutely loved it! To cut a long story short, I’ve owned many watches from around the globe but I’m particularly fed up with everything that has to do with the Swatch brand including Omega which I have just recently bought and it‘s already in repair - can happen, fair enough. What makes me mad though, is that I bought a Swatch Ivory and the crown broke (Believe me not my fault and error). I returned to swatch to have it fixed and they sent it back to me after 6 weeks saying they will not fix it with no further explanation. At the time I thought they didn’t want to do it for free, so I decided to just pay for the repair myself and resent it back to them saying I’ll cover the costs…. After waiting once again I received the watch back with the same note, that they are unwilling to repair it even if I pay. I had the watch for less that a year and having had at least 20 watches thus far being super careful with every piece and never broke a single one - I was pissed and still am after well over 5 years! Still have my first piece and over 30 now, if that adds some perspective… Their customer service is terrible and I regret buying the omega even though I love the watch and knew Swatch had acquired Omega years ago. I will never buy anything from the Swatch group again and will avoid buying overpriced pieces models because there is virtually no service after purchasing.

My late father in law was a keen letter writer. He was good at it. He owned an omega seamaster for years, until it developed a fault. I can remember what it was now. Anyway, he sent the watch ( at least 15 years old) to omega with a letter, saying how disappointed he was as a long time customer etc. They fixed his watch and sent it back, with a brand new model as well! Swear to god. This was about 30 years ago. Clearly, there's no way in hell this would happen now. Shows how much things have changed....not always for the better. It’s really a shame that they need the hype. Omega’s design team are running the brand into the ground. If they would bring on new designers/creative directors that were actually watch fans and in tune with the market, they could easily be the biggest brand in the world. As for Swatch, their main issue is the sizes. The old ones are 33mm and the new stuff is too large. They need a 36mm. Fairly easy fix. I think most of these Swiss brands are in dire need of new talent at the helm.

@@speedwolf5212 I think you’re blasphemous words are 100% correct. Omega is one creative director away from super success. Look at what Breitling has just done with their new designs, just stunning. Sure, anything slightly toned down from Breitlings mega-tacky recent history would have been good but they have just knocked it out of the park this go round. Omega feels safe and stale to me. Absolutely fine good looking watches without a soul. TBF I’m the last person to speak about Omega because their aesthetic as a whole has never spoken to me. The Swatch comment is so dead on. Too small to too large. Basic Swatch should be 36 (not 34), chronos and divers 38, and chrono divers 40. No idea why they thought 43 was a good idea. Swatch make loud designs that just come off as clown shoes at that size. You know like RM does. If people have to try that hard to be noticed they need to work on their personalities first. They seriously look like toasters on the wrist. I would also add that Swatch need better quality built into them. I own tons of them and they really are quite shit. They wind like a 15 year old learning to drive stick for the first time, functions stop working from out of nowhere, and they break easily. This goes for the Quartz versions as well. How do they use ETA and have these issues? Make them better and adjust prices accordingly. Make them easy to service as well. Swatch is a very collector friendly brand and if they just built them with some longevity in mind I think we’d see them explode again. Well that, and get the sizing dialed in.

The hype created around a plastic watch, followed by the general unavailability of the watch (unless you're willing to pitch a tent in front of a swatch shop) was what gave me the final push to quit the hobby after more than 35 years of collecting. First time I saw the hype, I realised that’s exactly what it was - a hyped product with ‘name’ recognition and not much else. Yes, the design almost apes the Speedy, but if you want a cheap Speedmaster, the Bulova Lunar Pilot is a far better option, and still only ten percent the price of the Omega. Hi Adrian, great video and food for thought. One question came to mind for me watching your segment though; did you contact Swatch to have it repaired or replaced? I'm assuming it does fall within the warranty no? It looks to me from your video that the bio ceramic cracked and could have been a batch that was improperly mixed or didn't cool right or even had bubbles form, weakening the final product. Only one third of the mix is ceramic and I would have to say that mixing ceramic and plastic can't be the easiest to do industrially. But I just can't justify spending either $250.00 at retail with them *only* being available at a Swatch boutique or getting one off of eBay for regularly 2x or 3x retail and not being guaranteed your watch will be legit. As many have said below, it's essentially a $25.00 watch with $225.00 worth of branding & hype. There are simply too many other better, more affordable, better built, durable options out there. I bought a casio gshock knockoff watch in walmart for $5 on a blackfriday it was originally $20 so yea. The thing has all the functions and look exactly like a rubber plastic Gshock. I was wearing it everywhere. I went on many field trip and camping out. The thing was beat up. Lost 2 of the 4 push button after a year. And at the second year, one day I found out the watch had a big crack on the front face and it also seems detaching from its core. I tried to push the cover and its structural housing back together, the watch just crumbled into a few piece on my hand. Later bought the reason deal Casio Gshock. Had some extreme weather and poor conditioned field camp with it. It just built like a tank. Everything just feels so sturdy and premium.

My MoonSwatch is going great, no problems, no damage, and with a Seiko mecha-quartz movement the accuracy varies less than a second a week. The sensually bumpy Rolex-style multi-link stainless steel bracelet flexes comfortably with tight tolerances. The matte sterling dial is framed by a deep red bezel and crystal--both sapphire--that gleam flamboyantly atop a well executed brushed stainless steel case. The rocket ship chronograph subdial hands are bop and the watch is water resistant to 100 m, (330 feet.) Sporting a screwdown crown and screwdown back, the watch can be opened and repaired. If you tire of the elegant stainless steel bracement, my watch was also shipped with a decent NATO strap that lets you vary your look from day to day. Oh, wait, mine ISN'T a MoonSwatch. I'm wearing a Pagani PD-1701 moonwatch homage, but with with the high-end specs Swatch left out. It doesn't have a brittle plastic case, no cheap acrylic crystal and no choice of straps; you have to settle for a single low-end NATO st;yle. The permanently sealed case cannot be opened to repair. Despite not having a sealed case, the PD-1701 has ah, 100 m better water resistance than the MoonSwatch's basic, "water resistant". It does have one thing in common with the MoonSwatch: style, which Pagani did better because this watch drips, it says, 'just try not to look at me!' There are two more differences: you can buy four PD-1701s for the price of one MoonSwatch, if you're willing to skip over the dubious privilege of paying an extra $210 to advertise that Omega logo.

The sweetness of the deal won't last as long as the bitterness that replaces it with. I felt at the beginning this was likely to fail in the long run. I assumed it would be longer than 2 months but not overly surprised. it was even at list an overpriced piece of plastic. As more and more fail (which they inevitably will) sentiment will turn against Omega for allowing such junk to bear their name. But OMEGA did not even like the idea. They did for a long time anything they could to NOT make this happen. I agree, the average-guy out in the streets will not know. But OMEGA had to pass on the design to Swatch, as the Swatch Group (which OMEGA belongs to as well) asked for it in an "insisting" way. They had no options. OMEGA also had zero development on this watch - they just "donated" the design. I would even say technically, this was robbery. Secondly anybody who is into watches knew, that this is not a quality product, not anywhere close to a real Speedy Moonwatch. Still, I understand the disappointment from Adrian. If I had one (and I try to get one, too), I would also be disappointed seing the watch drop to pieces... but all others (who are not into watches) will maybe just scrap it and turn over that page. I guess the ammount of people who really care about 200 quid is not that high on the group buying Monnswatches. Meanwhile I am happy I was unable to get one.

The near-term benefits to the Omega and Swatch brands aside, in terms of simple quality for price my money was better spent on the Speedmaster homage by Pagani with the Seiko VK63 movement and sapphire crystal. It was ridiculous for Omega/Swatch to make this watch out of bioceramic with a plastic crystal fused to the watch so it cannot be replaced - plus a cheap movement. While I don't mind any company producing a more affordable version of their own popular product, deliberately making one of such obviously poor quality actually does more to hurt their brand than help in the long run after the hype dies down and the problems start to surface. Yeah, it was great to see the lines at the stores for a simple watch, the online enthusiasm, and even the crazy resale prices - but just how many people will get turned off in the end because they got burned by poor quality? Unfortunately, I think it will be too many.

The problem for Omega is that they had to do it with Swatch, like they did. If they made a cheap version, similar to a Pagani Design and call it an Omega and sell it for $200, it will cheapen their image immeasurably. The idea had promise and the hype-building was effective... but the rollout was an absolute disaster, made worse by Swatch lying about future distribution online and then giving the worst coverup (Hayek: "There’s no emotion in online buying. It’s a carefully produced Swiss Made watch and not a commodity. [...] So why should we sell it online?"). Every honest reviewer has already pointed out that these do not appear to be high quality, "carefully produced", luxury timepieces. They are cheap, plastic, mass-produced watches with a fantastic design. If Swatch was honest about what these actually are, these could have becoming a fun, accessible classic. But they decided to milk the hype cow for short term gain... while leaving a bad taste in many Swatch & Omega collectors' mouths.

I was looking for a watch for my 8 year old daughter this summer and was walking into two different Swatch stores in New York, and both times the sales people almost accosted me with the exact same opening line: "Are you here for the Moonswatch?!". I answered "no", but it was almost like they didnt even wait for the answer, they were already half way to the display case for the Moonswatch when they processed my answer and stopped mid track. "No?" they said with a surprised look on their faces. It was probably because I dressed like a complete dork, because of all the camera gear I lug around. I wasn't interested in the watch in the first place, but this made it even more distasteful to me. I saw how they perceived me. "Here comes another cheap 40+ man with no sense of style, who wants a watch that looks like an Omega, but can't afford that". I'd rather wear a calculator watch from Casio and be proud of that then walk around with a fake rich mans watch evan if its from Swatch...

The MoonSwatch hype got me interested in buying watches again. I considered popping down to the Swatch boutique in Harajuku to see what all the fuss was about but something didn't smell right. Omega Speedy's never really did it for me in the first place and I had a couple of Swatch automatics that I didn't wear because they were just lacking in wrist presence. After checking the news about long queues at all the stores I decided not to bother to obtain something I didn't need (I already had an excellent Oris chrono built like a tank) and didn't want, and once I knew I didn't want it, the hype fell away and I saw it for what it was. What I DID do was buy a CasioOak Tough Solar that is far more functional, far better constructed, is more fun to wear and does the tongue-in-cheek nod to a more expensive watch with much more style, costs less and is readily available. You may love the idea, like this guy does, but I don't part with my hard-earned for cute ideas that fall apart on the wrist. This was a cash grab pure and simple. Y'all been had.

Notbroken. Mission to Mercurey, black tropic strap, very happy. My Speedmaster 125 is just too damn heavy…

That's terribly disappointing for the Swatch brand. By comparison, my Timex quartz that I received as a gift lasted for 6 years before the movement showed signs of slowing. The Indiglo function failed at the 2 year mark. Unfortunately lower tier quartz are designed to be expendable, but I expect better from Swatch.

The cheap quartz watches that have not let me down are Citizen eco drives. I know they aren’t looked at fondly by many collectors, but they keep on running.

I'm an Edinburgh boy and I'd love to meet up and chat watches with you, I'm at the start of my journey kinda two years in through COVID and I realised I love these trinkets, that measure what you have done ,what you have left ,major and minor points in your life. I'm very much at the budget end as it's hard financing your family during these times. I started with homages, then moved into Vostok, Orient, Casio, zelos ( which are ridiculous value original design watches.) I'm now creeping towards Hamilton and seiko, keeping an eye on bulova for a real moon watch. Hit me up if you want to chat real budget 😉
