this is the most practical, honest, and rational review I have ever seen of any laptop. People just review laptops based on a Premiere Pro rendering speeds and they forget that other people are not video editors.
That was a great review, mate. Fr Im still in college (Computer Engineering) so Im not building large projects yet and I was a bit worried that my M1 Air would fall short soon because of its 8GB of RAM, but I'm a little relieved after watching your video, specially because you mention using Docker while running other stuff (and that was big concern for me, because I never had to use it yet)
Thank you so much! I was concerned about 16 or 8 gb of ram model but seeing how you were able to get by with no problems on only 8 I think ill save my money and just get the 8 model. I am a 2nd year CIS major student that wants to learn about development and cyber security.
I basically just do little bit of coding, do some courses online, attend zoom class, create excel sheets ,make many PPTs and stream movies So do you think 256 gb base model is enough??
Good review of the M1 especially for the programmers and software engineers. Thanks for specifically pointing out certain aspects, which these set of people cares for. It is helpful in getting a better idea about this device.
Everything even your sponsor ad was helpful tbh. Literally one of the most useful ad shoutouts ever because you cater to students, we need more coding mock interviews. Love how you went over issues and even solutions instead of “this happened and it sucked” you said “you may encounter this, but this is how you bypass it.” Love that. I will probably still get a pro because I am about to graduate and will most likely need all the features of the pro as a professional, but it is good to know if I had gotten the air I would not regret it for the year or so I have left of school. :)
@@JT-wk8sy i mean i don’t want it specifically for gaming but i still would like to play some battle royale games from time to time on low resolution. So will the laptop be smooth enough for that?
@@kinshuksharma3280 of course, M1 is enough to run game such as Fortnite or LoL smoothly, the only problem will be does the game compatible with Mac os. You can find lots of vid talking about gaming on Macbk air/pro M1 on RU-vid
It’s alright but not too good also emulators weren’t compatible with m1 chip when I tried to download it. (1-2 weeks ago). Also there is some fight going on between Apple and epic so fortnite (till now) is not on AppStore, you can download it but there are no updates on Mac version.
As a Canadian, I kept focusing on your jacket ;) I kept thinking 'why is he wearing a down jacket indoors??' In Canada, we would wear that when outdoors if it is winter and snowing !
Same for me, i used wear thick jacket indoor at outside temperature -10. Most of the time people from India & Bangladesh have to suffer sub zero temperature as problem, because we are not immune to such cold temperature.
Awesome! I just changed college program from communication to web and mobile development and you definitely made me confident in my decision to purchase the M1 for development and video-editing!
This video really sets my mind..for macbook air m1... can't thank you enough for this video...Really very very grateful to you bhaiya for uploading this video...Hope your channel grow more... Thank you..
Dude is a programmer. He mention that he’s not sure how it’s automatically closing other app to save Ram for your current usage. That shows how Apple ace this. I’m going buy M1 Mac. Thanks champ for explaining. So detail !
Sorry to say this @LamoRao😅 Dude was Wrong. It won’t close any apps by itself. If the ram was full it will leave 500 to 700mb in ram for some intensive works and it will use Ssd memory also known as Swap memory for the extra usage…. U can check there was nearly 7gb of swap is being used in his video. 🙂
@@rameshm103 thanks for breaking it down bro. I just got hyped up by his lovely words. Well the machine is sturdy build by itself with no comments. Cherrs
Programmers are insane....tons of respect....have zero sense on what are u testing/doing but the fact that a programmer said it’s 2 times faster is so convincing....
The M1 Macbook is great, but I don't think it's worth selling your existing Macbook's just to get the M1, if you are buying a brand new Macbook for the first time or if your current Macbook is more than 5 years old, the M1 is best. Overall the M1 is a solid laptop...
What’s your TBW as of now and would you consider yourself a heavy user? I have the 8 gb ,256 gb version and I can’t invest a darn in apple care, I’m a college student and will mostly be using it for coding and surfing, would that suffice or should I return it lol, I don’t have enough to buy the 16 gb version either😂
Thanks for such a good review! I was in a dilemma of whether or not to buy my next laptop from apple or whether I should stick to the tried and tested Windows laptop path. But you are the reason, your video gave me the much needed confidence to go ahead and buy an apple mac book air .. wohooo.. thank youuu.. keep up the good content🤗👍🏻😊
I am just planning to switch to Apple but i can't push my self forward, as i always thought that if I go with windows I will have gpu, but I didn't actually use GPU that much.
Resently, I did a two project one with CNN, 2d cnn and 3d cnn and another one with BERT and found that there is no better option than Google colab for GPU related task but only condition is that training should complete before session ends.
@@pinakinchaudhari95 I don't understand your logic for a laptop : almost all windows laptops are equipped with all-in-one chips, even the pro ones. The latest AMD all-in-ones chips graphics are good enough to run some of the last AAA titles in 4K
@@jas_bataille no no, I am not talking about gaming, I am talking about computing on GPU ! I have purchased a gaming laptop, thinking that later I will use for professional use but I found out that laptop GPU is sufficient for some cad software but not for Coding, also I don't have portability any more, I can only use my laptop about 1 hour on laptop. However, I am thinking about Dell XPS, as in M1 apple you can not change SSD or RAM! My use case can easily exceed read -write cycle of that.
I have the baseline MBA M1 and an intel baseline MBP. This little machine is a powerhouse! Waiting on M1X/M2 IMacs and I’ll sell my MBP towards it. I don’t regret buying the MBA at all! Great for Web Designers/Developers alongside my M1 IPad Pro!
how does it work with parallels and docker? I would like to buy the air m2 and run 2 or 3 linux virtual machines for practicing ansible. Could you please provide your feedback?
1:43 but the macbook was also using around 6,59Gb of swap memory, witch uses the ssd like ram, that’s why it’s now crushing. I’d rader pick up the 16gb model is more future proof, and the ssd wouldn’t be ruined that much Edit: i’m sorry for my English
It's doing well with 8 gigs because of swap usage 1:57. Swap is a hard drive storage allocated for RAM needs. If all your files and apps excede your real (physical) RAM your OS will start using your Swap (vitrual) RAM. I hope that brings some light.
Hi Harnoor.. this is a good review.. as a Developer., i have been coding for more than 25 years.. now , the reviews mostly i get to see is by the creative Artists. Rarely get to see the review on application specificly....Just a suggestion if a machine is asking so much of time for installation and to operate it's not worth it. Human resources is more expensive than H/w. One fundamental that most of the SE miss out most of the time.
I found, at least when I bought mine back in late 2019 that the 8G was lagging for me and took it back for the 16. I tend to have a million things open though, but surprised that you have 8GB with all that open and no issues.
@@sly2792004 Do you guys use it with full brightness all the time? Apple are known for warmers screens, so it must have less blue lights than other laptops.
@@siddheshkadam136 can you show me the receipt, does that receipt shows GST? I've to buy, if it mentions GST then I'll get discounts. Thanks in advance.
One suggestion for a programming point of view to make it very clear comparison is. With the mac book terminal, we can build projects like `llvm` using a `CMake` tool. Generally what we do: navigate to `_project_name_/build` directory [sometimes we need to create a directory] say the magic word `make` this will build the project to major the build tome what we can say `time make` And it will tell us the time taken by a `make` command It gives us time in 3 modes: real | user | sys This might get us fair numbers.
It's the only thing holding me back from buying. I tested M1 in store, watched reviews, and almost ordered one, but after I heard this issue I dont dare to spend much money with a problem like this
@Nithoshitha S Many forum posts and articles appeared, that macOS uses too much swap, so the SSD can die faster. All SSD has a maximum amount (TerraBytes Written), which you can write to your disk. Samsung Evo 850 500GB series is for example warrantied for 5 years or 150 TB For example, if your drive is rated for 365 TBW, that means you can write 365 TB into it before you may need to replace it. If its warranty period is 5 years, that works out to 365 TB ÷ (5 years × 365 days/year) = 200 GB of writes per day. The higher the SSD capacity, the higher the TBW warranty value. Many users said that they experienced quite high writings on their ssd in Macbook M1, even with basic usage. The macOS uses Swap to prevent maximum usage of ram, so your apps dont crash and dont go out of memory. But it's okay, this is how the system works, windows does it too. So even if you have free ram to use, the system will still use the swap on your ssd, so ram wont fill up, but it makes your SSD reach the TBW value faster because of using the ssd swap instead of actual ram. Many reported 60-80 GB write/day, and 3% percentage being already used of their ssd "lifetime" only within a few weeks of usages, when they checked it with some tools. So that may be that the 8gb ram feels more at the cost of write cycles. Apple never give information about their TBW, but they use very good quality SSD-s (some says the best in the market) Possible scenarios: 1. It's really an issue, and will be fixed, in the next generation or with software update, but Apple still didnt give an official answer, as I know. 2. Maybe only the reporting software gives false information, because it is not native software yet. 3. The high writings can be caused by unoptimised "non-ARM" apps, because they run with Rosetta emulator, and the emulator uses the disk a lot. So maybe it wont be an issue later, when every app will be M1 ready. 4. Maybe it just affects 2-3% of users 5. Some says it's just overthink, just use your computer, modern SSD-s are planned to last 5-7 years and to endure more write cycles, so it's okay 6. Some say it's planned obsolescence, so you have to buy a new mac after the SSD fails. As you see can since we dont have an official answer,, Apple is quiet, there are many guessings. Only thing I know that Apple usually sells quality devices, which last for many years, they have one of the best engineers. But I wouldnt be surprised if it is planned, so since everything is soldered to the motherboard, you cant replace any part, if something dies (ssd), you have to replace the whole motherboard or buy a new Mac. Maybe it really is just too overhyped, and we shouldnt worry at all, but until I dont see an official answer, I dont know what is the truth, and I dont want to play with 1300-1400 $, so I will be lucky or not :D
Watched this on my base model M1! Thank you for creating this video! I would one day like to work in the computer industry! This video was very helpful and inspiring!!
Great video. I have been editing content using fcpx on a 2015 MacBook Pro with an i7 processor but because of the performance of the M1 chip, I will be definitely saving the extra cash and purchasing the MacBook Air. 👍
Thank you for information, I am also thinking to switch from intel version and needed more details about how well everything works, but I want to say one thing, in entire video, your battery was always dying, you'll damage it much faster if you are running so many apps and battery has less than 20% charge available, just friendly reminder. for everything else, thank you for detailed info.

I'm an android developer, but I know nothing about Tenser flow, Home brew and a lot other things, I don't use python, How harnoor is able to do so many things???
if you do android development then intellij/as takes care of all the installation for you. The needed python packages are also installed with the command line tools by default However, if you want to do proper python work, its always good to install a separate version of python as the system installation can be finicky. Brew is a good tool because it lets you install and update python from the command line. Additionally its just easier to install things using the command line and brew rather then finding it on the internet and installing it yourself. brew install google-chrome vs going to the google site then downloading it then opening the dmg and dragging it and ejecting/deleting the dmg, much much easier (and it looks cool while you do it) Tensorflow is actually quite popular with some android apps as its a google technology, and doesnt take too long to learn, I would try giving it a shot!
Maybe 'cause they don't want you to see their search history or want to save some random search in their history (I do this) just 'cause they had to make a video.

In my experience with Macbook Air M1, 1TB and 8GB RAM, I experienced 'memory pressure' problem because of which the system would get stuck and I ultimately returned it. I have made a video about that is on my channel. Seems like you never experience the 'memory pressure' problem.
