In my previous video ( • YOU WILL TAKE MORE DAM... ) I was wrong about the way ZOS is calculating mitigation. In this video I'll show you a different reverse engineered mitigation formula that is most likely correct.

Feel like it would just be easier to have a 90% damage mitigation cap. This just feels like ZoS has come up with the single most complex fix possible

I have a feeling this problem runs much deeper than just damage mitigation. It's nowhere as bad damage mitigation, but there is something strange going on with the % bonuses for speed, mostly surrounding using the steed mundus with wild hunt ring. Even though you can get to max movement speed without the steed mundus, if you try to combine steed mundus with wild hunt and other bonuses to reach max movement speed, you'll end up moving a lot slower than if you were to reach max movement speed without steed mundus

Great video again lol, I hope we won't discover anything new that changes mitigation again. Well zos making penalties multiplicative would be a nice change but its unlikely. Zeebs showed me a post by a zenimax dev that said they want the penalties to be additive.

Wow. I never understood how ZOS got the bright idea to plague heavy armor (you know, the kind of armor you wear to reduce damage) with a penalty that _increases_ damage taken, but this is so, so much worse. How did they mess this up so bad? Why are armor bonuses multiplicative but the penalties additive? Whose bright idea was that? And rounding after every multiplication is like an absolute beginner mistake in programming. Especially if you always round _up_ instead of down. It should be obvious that some factors will get completely nullified in this system. Did they just not care or is this an oversight? You can't tell me it's easier to round after applying each factor than to just multiply everything together and _then_ round the result. Because it isn't. So what the hell ZOS?

@hyperioxes Are you recommending undeath passive for tanks "always"? Or should we avoid it in high flame DMG dungeons/trials? Is it better to go with undeath most of the time?

You don’t want to run undeath when it is not absolutely necessary, since it has a lot of negatives (increased ability cost for non vampire abilities, health recovery massively decreased, increased fire dmg taken etc…); Besides having more survival than absolutely required is pointless and there is no vet content in the game that can’t be completed without undeath. Tbh unless you’re running trial HMs and even then it’s really just for very specific bosses, there aren’t gonna be any scenarios where you need to run it. The infinite archive is a bit of an exception, as it can help add some survivability and the negatives can be mitigated with visions. But for general vet trials and dungeons nah, store the vampire in armoury or at the very least keep the stage at minimum Also note that the only two vampire abilities that can be useful on a tank are mist form and exhilarating siphon for movement and ultigen respectively. So unless you’re running a perma magma shell setup (which is only very situationally useful) you’re not using many vampire skills, so the cost increase/reduction trade off just ends up being a negative

ZOS uses the exact same kind of math in calculating mitigation that the Veteran's Administration uses in assessing disability ratings.

They are using something called Significant Figures. Its usually used in high end measurements to reduce sources of error. It doesn't really seem appropriate for a game environment though.

Thanks for the update, Hyper. I was kinda confused after the last vid. This helps with understanding. I can imagine what they wanted to do there. But it clearly didn't work after recent events reaching 100% mitigation. Penalties still beding additive there is definitely still work to do atm. I agree with others the lack of transparency / comprehension how mitigation works is really underwhelming. Additional rounding operations don't have any impact on bad server performance tho (read that a few times) :D The whole thing is way too complex to come up with a better / good solution without having overall knowledge in depth. But of course it would be very nice for reproducing / making builds choices of the formula was more simple. Like for instance all effects being additive (with decreased base values) and also having a hard mitigation cap at xx percent...

Very nice work, helped me understand how zos garbage code gets results. So.. has the mitigation calculator update for the roundup conclusion? It still shows the mitigation can be 85.4209. BTW, may I ask how to calculate the Critical Resistance and Elemental Resistance? tyvm.

no clue about how critical works because its only for pvp as for elemental resistance its just additive with your physical/spell resistance which caps at 33.1k

So with this formula, on a necromancer… what’s our total damage mitigation ACTUALLY, With: -Stage 3 vamp -Deadened pain with major protection proced -Nobility in decay active -minor maim active on the attacking enemy. This of course would all be before blocking.

So every time every person on the server is taking damage rather than calculate via straight multiplication only, they will be also rounding each step. That in addition to being bad math cant be good for server load. I propose additive with a mitigation cap of 90 to 95%

Don't worry. The server does not care about a simple additional operation like rounding. Also funny ppl saying this is bad math. It has nothing to do with math. It's their formula.

The only thing that vampire is good for is the damage buff from stealth as a night blade. Or another class if you're working it into it or if you run 40K health or above? And you want the tankiness from the undeath passive. Honestly, vampire in cyrodiil sucks ass unless you're gankimg imo Fire damage ain't a joke

@@sk8legendz Ah... 95 % of all PvP builds are Vamps. 6% additional fire dmg taken and 6% increased cost in trade for the 30% all dmg mitigated at low health is swell worth the trade off as it gives you a chance to burst heal instead of dying to a gank, dot or execute.

@@irishned6464 fire damage will kill you fast. 30% doesn't kick in for most bulds til you are at execute range anyway you realistically get maybe 10%on average from it at best and cost increase affects sustain as well

We need better explanations about these numbers in the game itself. I don't understand how Zenimax expects us to be able to build our character efficiently if they don't give us information about these important numbers. Thanks for this valuable information, great video!

If you share such technical information, any time there is a minor change, you need to give an update. Thats additional work (and of course additional room for errors) and many times you don't want to be too transparent cause it can reveal possible mistakes on your side and also lead to unwanted questions (also additional work).

Fascinating. Are they calling a ceiling function after every step? Maybe they are doing alot of integer divisions and they are cutting off everything after the period (for this to be the case they might calculate damage done since it would round down). I can't imagine this is done intentionally. If it is, at least do proper rounding

Simple answer to this is probably to prevent stacking mitigation too much. I think its a good approach. But maybe something like just doing additive, decreasing base values and adding a hard cap could also work... But its way to complex to come up with a better / good solution without having detailed information and overall knowledge.

You can still reach 100% mitigation without vamp. Just requires more skills slotted but yeah, nerfing undeath will help but it won't fix this issue. The issue is how this isn't all multiplicative. For some reason ZoS is hardware avoiding trying to make the entire mitigation formula multiplicative

With an unpredictable and always-changing mitigation, no wonder large battles are always laggy. Every second(or maybe even faster) game recalculates all that formulas. May be there is an easier way? And light armour is useless still? It gives debuff to martial damage and also gives less overal armour. What's the point in it? Just use medium and throw some mag recovery. Less stamina issues, more armour, more spell damage. Supreme over all. Anyway, your prognosis on how meta will shift?

ESO is really, really bad at explaining how any of its mechanics actually work, and stuff like this is just the cherry on top. Why is it that I have to find this out from a small RU-vidr and not on a Wiki or official guide? Insane decision making behaviour ZOS.
