Coleton compares two methods of washing a Tesla Cybertruck with his basic detailing supplies he was able to bring to Austin, Texas. Tesla recommends Dawn Dish Soap, but how does Adam's Car Shampoo compare?

Hopefully you all enjoy this one, I wish I would have had the ability to use a foam cannon and a pressure washer to properly wash/rinse off the Cybertruck. I still believe this test will help show the showcase the difference between Dawn Dish Soap and a Ph neutral professional car wash shampoo. Once I'm able to get a truck into the detail bay at home we will test all kinds of different professional grade snow foams! Thanks for understanding!

out of Spec - Coleton , car soap is Irrelevant to Cybertruck as its mostly Stainless Steel , Saphire Glass w/ some Plastic trim. Spray on Ceramic costings are BS , and a waste of time. as are Applied PTFE coatings. HARD baked on Ceramic Armor (permanent) is worth doing , but only on Conventional cars w/ Automotive paint. I dont think you can Apply BAKED on Ceramic onto Martensitic Stainless Steel. you , should have obtained a Supply of TESLA Cybertruck wash for TESTING. I think YOU will find , just PLAIN tap water works REALLY well as its NEUTRAL pH, by LAW . and in General FREE of Large Particles . WATER is a UNIVERSAL solvent . at most you will need Armor All on Tires & Plastic trim. the Glass , automotive Wiper fluid should do the job. I would use Microfiber and 100% Denatured Alcohol to clean Stainless Steel ONLY.

People don't understand SS. For SS to work it needs to be bare without any kind of coating. No wax, no paint, no wrap, etc. This is how SS stays stainless. It needs oxygen to react with chromium and form chromium oxide which is what give it's stainless property. If that reaction does not happen the stainless will lose it's property and the rusting will be accelerated. Best thing to use to clean SS is citric acid. Citric acid will passivate SS to make it more stainless. Doesn't need it very often, I would just passivate it once a year. The rest of the time I would just use Dawn or even simple green on SS.

A couple of questions: 1) Are we 100% sure it is uncoated stainless? Does a paint meter read 0? 2) Most detailed when doing a decon wash tend to use an iron fallout remover, how is environmental iron fallout going to affect the metal and is the only way to remove it with abrasion? I’d imagine Iron X or any other similar chemical would be disastrous. Also, as CTs get into more hands there will be people to run them through automated tunnel washes. What kind of horror do you expect to see with the harsh wheel “brighteners” that are sprayed on the rockers and are not adequately rinsed?

@@OutofSpecDetailing You have to remember that we are dealing with raw metal here and not a polymer (car paint) that is more or less impervious to lots of chemicals. We are now getting into metal chemistry and etching and passivation. Dawn is designed to remove grease. Fingerprints are grease. So we have two things that to get rid of. Fingerprints and then general cleansing of dirt and grime that is the usual fare for soaps that are for polymers. Windex is a strong base at around 11 with the ammonia, so is dishwasher detergent. Bases are good at cutting grease and will do a good job at removing the fingerprints, but they don't have the surfactants that will loosen the common grime (dawn is better in this area). IPA breaks down the grease, but doesn't have surfactants to keep it suspended and rinsed off. The rust spots are going to be interesting. They will need either an acid or base to dissolve them. I suspect the best thing is going to be a strong base pre wash and then some super hydrophobic coating (ceramic? Coating) top coat to seal the pores and keep grease from wicking into the sanding marks. It'll be fascinating to see how it shakes out. I am sure there are chemists working on this as we speak. Thanks for the initial tests.

I make a lot of machined parts out of 304 and 316 stainless and use Mothers Metal Polish, Barkeepers Friend, and spray cleaner called Brite Shine for stainless commercial kitchens. If you get color discolorations welding supply shops have stuff to remove "blueing" that shows up around welds. Good Luck.

No need to go get expensive stuff at the welding shop. Just use citric acid, does the same thing...probably the same stuff, other two acids which are not environmentally friendly that can be used is nitric acid and requires ppe. It is call passivation. Take it from a certified SS TIG welder.

@JackOLanternBob
@JackOLanternBob 7 месяцев назад
Why is that?
@zacjones89
@zacjones89 6 месяцев назад
Mainly because car washes are extremely convenient but tend to leave a lot of swirl marks in painted surfaces. The stainless could be immune to those marks from the bristles in the car wash. But the car wash likely wouldn't remove fingerprints, and would probably leave runoff traces from crevices. The car wash could be part of a routine though -- daily maintenance would be windex for fingerprints, then maybe run it through the car wash, when it starts to look dirty, let it dry for an hour or so then hit it with windex again later to remove any traces of chemical runoff.@@JackOLanternBob

Stainless can corrode, especially in crevices. Plastic and rubber parts benefit from protectants. I suspect a gentle car wash detergent is going to be good. And I suspect the stainless will benefit from the right kind of silicon or waxy protectant - might help with finger prints though it might also slightly change the look of the material. Another reason to use a protectant is water spotting, which all parts will have depending on water hardness.

Plus you can use it to air dry your car.

One more thing about Dawn dishwasher soap a key factor about it is that it doesn't leave water spots that's why it's used to clean glassware and it does not leave water spots at least very minimally and if you're drying soon after you wash it water spots should not be a problem

One thing I might suggest is that you get Tesla to give you a few Cybertruck body panels. Where I work we just use Dawn dish soap to clean stainless steel tanker trailers. Use Jungle Jake 1:5 to remove bugs, grease, hydraulic oil.... Over time there will be a rust halo that forms from the minerals in the water. There are cleaners that do remove those deposits. You might want to go talk to a semi trailer washing station and get some advice from them. Also looking at that, there seem to be residual oils from the manufacturing process that may need to be stripped off. IKD if borax would help with that or not. Could experiment on old cheap stainless steel pans,

Back quarter: those dots are most likely rust (stainless steel corrodes bit differently to other steels). Those streaks could be from marks from steel sheet rolling machine or from steel panel press, but I cannot say it for sure. Front: bug carcasses are acidic. So rust freckles incoming. Yes, it is impossible to have constant shine and look without sanding the whole vehicle as the last step. If a door (or any other panel) looks different, it has been replaced after that step

Super interesting. Clear Tesla was building a truck and not a showpiece. Knowing buyers would want to clean these, surprising they didn’t work with an automotive products company to develop a range of cleaners / polishers etc. prior to launch - so perhaps the tough truck look is intentional, or Tesla concluded there are not too many consumer friendly (safe) ways to achieve the appearance perfected for painted panels. Definitely going to be up to 3rd parties to formulate new solutions, but will demand justify it for them.

My OCD was off the charts with the soaps left to dry on the black trim. Enjoyed the video though!

I’ve heard Tesla was using stainless steel refrigerator cleaner. I’ve never heard the dawn dish soap thing!

Dawn gets a bad rap but this stuff is not nearly as harsh as people say it is. Dawn has many different strengths to their products, and the normal standard blue bottle dawn is very gentle. On anything for that matter. I will not use platinum Dawn or if you do you platinum Dawn dilute it with more water than the original. Never use dawn Powerwash on a normal car finish, but I think it’s perfectly fine to use on stainless steel products.

The first thing I would apply as a test after a wash would be WD-40. It works when I apply to our stainless steel in the kitchen and the garage. Also. I LOVE the smell of WD40

So a rinseless wash on this would be ideal

Definitely would love to test a full Rinse-less wash process. Next time I have one, I will! I really feel traditional foam cannon, contact wash, pressure rinse is the way.

The Turo one you mention is on there for $999/day 😬. And for another $30 you can drop it off without charging the truck 🤦‍♂️
