Vlog #5
In this episode we get an unexpected surprise while boondocking in Columbia Falls, Montana. This is by far one of my favorite campsites of the trip. Beautiful mountains set the scene as we settle in for a few days.
I also build a fire then cook chili in my Lodge cast iron camp pot. This is my first attempt cooking my entire chili recipe over an open campfire. Please remember that you can make anything into a grand adventure. So get out there and begin living free!
Thank you for watching and enjoy!

Thanks for the content! I did learn something I thought I would pass on. I was out wheeling in my 2020 JLUR this year and an old pro at this off-roading stuff said the following: if you are off-road and need 4x4, always use 4L. He said it is much easier on the whole vehicle because it simply has the torque it needs to get the job done. It made a lot of sense to me and I would imagine it is even more so when towing one and a half tons of camper behind ya!

@@DavidWaldrip My pleasure. I find my Wrangler Rubicon to be a bit squirrelly when it is really wet, so I tend to put it in 4H when wet and doing city driving. I go back to 2H when I hit the highway. Otherwise I now only use 4L ;)

This is where the onboard generator of the new F-150 powerboost hybrid would come in handy...7200 watts through a 240v or few 110’s.
@DavidWaldrip
@DavidWaldrip 3 года назад
I haven’t heard about this yet. Sounds super helpful. Do you know if you have to leave the truck running to make the onboard generator work? The one benefit to a separate generator is that you can take it places or use it for things that a truck couldn’t do. Modularity seems to benefit me a lot when living on the road.
@TheHoosiers2008
@TheHoosiers2008 3 года назад
@@DavidWaldrip Yeah it’ll cycle on and off but you can lock the truck, and it’ll run for days until it hits a predetermined fuel level so you’re not stranded. But yeah you’re right, the trailer is dependent on the truck for power.

@DavidWaldrip
@DavidWaldrip 3 года назад
Thank you for following along. I do have solar panels however they are simply a trickle charge to the AGM batteries. They cannot run the AC or the microwave. Plus it’s not always sunny. So solar while being helpful is far from perfect. That’s why I have old reliable aka the generator : )

What's the life on the generator? How many gallons and how long does it usually last ya?
@DavidWaldrip
@DavidWaldrip 3 года назад
Great question. It holds 1 gallon of fuel. The specs say it can run for 8 hours under a normal load. I have never ran it consistently for more than two hours so I am not sure exactly how long it last. I would estimate about 8 hours per gallon. It is very quiet.

How well does your Jeep pull up hills? I debated getting this set up or go with an F150 pro power. I prefer the Jeep Gladiator but Everything I watched on it says it issues going up hills (Redlining). How do you like the 16X? Enough room for you two or would you like the 20x instead?

@DavidWaldrip 3 года назад
@@ivabuttitch How would I "run the carburetor dry"? I am not very mechanically inclined.
@ivabuttitch
@ivabuttitch 3 года назад
Turn the gas supply off and let the generator run until it shuts off. Ethanol in gas will gum up these small carburetors and make them hard to start. It’s best to run ethanol free gas in small engines if you can find it. It’s a little more expensive, but well worth the cost. You can use sta-bil in your gas if you can’t find ethanol free.

@DavidWaldrip

You are correct. The basecamp is very spartan when it comes to entertainment. My guess is they didn't add any entertainment to both keep cost down and encourage users of this trailer to be outside. This Airstream with all the doors and hatches open makes you feel like you are one with your environment.
@rambalram2610
@rambalram2610 3 года назад
Alright that is reasoanble. But I wish they have installed a good quality sound system because doing a after market one would invove wiring, opening ducts etc. A nice sound system would only enhance living experience inside the cabin.

@billredding2000
@billredding2000 3 года назад
"There's iron in your words." -- Ten Bears Seriously though, getting iron from your pot isn't anything to worry over, it's probably VERY little and at least it will keep you from being anemic. However, I WOULD avoid using aluminum pots for that "leaching" reason: I don't think THAT metal is safe ingesting. ;-)
@DavidWaldrip
@DavidWaldrip 3 года назад
I don't mind eating iron but my poor pan. I expected it to be tougher than this. Dang!
@billredding2000
@billredding2000 3 года назад
@@DavidWaldrip When I used to have.use cast-iron pots/pans (I preferred "Lodge" brand products) and cooked acidic foods they tended to turn black but I didn't notice any damage/etching. Still, from then on I avoided cooking acidic foods in them (mainly tomatoes/spaghetti sauce, etc.). But I wasn't using them camping (don;t have my RV yet) -- mainly because they were too big/heavy (!) -- but @ home on induction units (NuWave PIC "Gold" cook-tops), as cast-iron is outstanding for induction. But then I decided to get a set of heavy stainless-steel (but induction-ready) so no more issues from acidic foods. You might to use stainless cookware for your camping gear...most of my "camping" pots/pans are made by Primus -- I wanted them nice/compact/nesting (AND decent quality, not cheap thin stuff) so they didn't take up too much space be it packed in a backpack, RV or the back of my car/SUV/truck. My camping cups and flatware are titanium, but not sure I'd use titanium for cooking (might be too thin and foods would burn if you're not careful). At-home stuff didn't matter size-weight-wise, -- so the heavyweight cookware set I got (Anolon "Nouvelle" copper/stainless) was fine -- but when camping it wasn't appropriate. So as said, I went with SS and titanium cook/drink-ware especially geared to campers/backpackers. So, you might want to look for camping/backpacker gear for your outings vs. stuff better left @ home. Yes, cast-iron IS traditional/historical American camping gear, but TODAY it's just too big/heavy -- IMO. Trying to make 'home stuff" work for you out in the wild is (to me) counter-productive -- look into using stuff specifically made for camping. I have 2 complete sets of cookware/flatware/cups/plates (etc.) equipment: Home & Camping -- NEITHER does BOTH jobs well, but each does its OWN job well. Happy Trails, -- BR
