Hi guys! So sorry that I didn't initially understand the message in 'Surface Pressure'!! I admit, I got distracted by the donkeys! XD I realise (in this video) during the credits what she was actually saying. My bad for not picking up on it at the time!

In fact the donkeys add to the point of the song. They are representing the beast of burden. They are working animals, they pull heavy loads, plough fields and carry people

They are generally seen/used as beasts of burden. Just there to carry the load. But I've seen video from a farm with donkeys. They have amazing personalities and are very social animals. I saw one place that has a donkey as a seeing-eye support animal for a blind horse. He diligently guides her out of the barn in the morning, stays by her side as her companion all day, and makes sure she gets back into her stall before going into his at night. All on his own, no-one instructs him to do these things.

Hi! I’m new to your channel, I’m in the part of the video when Surface Pressure just finished and I must admit I was a little frustrated bc you where paying so much attention to the visuals and not the lyrics that I have to stop and read the comments😅. I’m really glad I found this one because now I can continue watching. The lyrics on this movie were created by Lyn Manuel Miranda, same as in the movie Moana. He is the creator of the Broadway musical Hamilton too. So his lyrics are always important and worth listening. Recommendation for future reactions, if you are reacting to a movie with music in it, pay attention to the lyrics. It’s true that not always happens but most of the time lyrics are import to the plot, not just a funny filler. I will subscribe now for sure because apart from that, I’m loving your reaction. Sorry for the long message. Great work 💜

You should totally look into the fan made song Turn It Down, the actual voice actress of Dolores sings it so in a way it's at least half canon in my opinion. Plus the song is so catchy 🥰

When Alma is describing her story to Mirabel in the opening, she's talking to a 5 year old, so we see a muted version of how Pablo died, and instantly focus on the candle, but when they are at the river together, we see the entire story and Alma faces her pain for the first time 😢 one little detail tends to go unnoticed, The Casita responds to Mirabel the same ways it responds to Alma, and only to them, Mirabel will be the next head for the next generation, and she will know when it will be time to pass the candle to the next person when the time comes. This movie is a full family therepy session that celebrates the individuals within it. So wonderful ❤

The way everyone doesn't even notice that Mirabel isn't in the family photo is actually quite relatable to me. I had the same thing happen to me when we were on vacation in Bulgaria. Everyone was taking photos while I stood off to the side just enjoying the sunset on the beach. While I really didn't mind not being included in the whole thing, the fact that my mother or anyone else didn't even NOTICE that I wasn't there hurt the most.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I was always the afterthought of the family. The one they only called upon when they needed me to babysit my elderly grandmother. When I wasn't needed, they would forget to call me to invite me to special occasions. Even if they did invited me, they would call me the day of the event while everyone else had gotten written invitations weeks ahead of time. I was also the last to be told anything. Including being told about marriages, pregnancies and births. "OH, you didn't know? I thought someone told you!", was the line I got from almost everyone my whole life. I feel you and get you. I suggest you do as I did. Never take it personally. You can't re-raise them and teach them all over again. You are not their mother. They are who they are. Chances are they have even far bigger issues than you do. So trying to get validation from people who can't recognize their own problems is not worth it. You know your own worth. And that is ALL that matters and all you need. So raise your head high and look and move forward. Don't let anyone hold you back simply because they think so small that it blinds them. If they can't see you, it's because they are spiritually impaired and their souls are blind to the beauty of the true you. Be you and keep shining bright. Perhaps that is why they can't see you. Your light is so bright it blinds them. 🌟😉👍❤️‍🔥

There are numerous RU-vid fan theory videos about Encanto. One of the popular fan theory is that the house is actually the spirit of the grandfather (Abuela's late husband who sacrificed himself to save his family and the villagers). The other theory is that the reason Mirabel never got a door and room when she was little because she is the next matriarch of the family. The entire house IS her room. She is the new keeper of the candle and the glue that holds the family together. 🏡✨️🕯✨️
@michaelklaus
@michaelklaus Месяц назад
She enchants the doorknob. There is no candle for her to bear. It is basically hidden not hidden in Dos Oruguitas. At first it seems like the song is about Alma and Pedro but later you realize that Mirabel and Alma are the ones who are the Mariposas (it is in their clothes), the one with the power of transformation. Notice how in the beginning Alma tells the story as if Pedro simply went away with their pursuers and the candle raised the mountains... but during Dos Oruguitas, Pedro is slain, Alma cries out in despair and that leads to candle being ignited with magic and banishing their pursuers. Which also gives another meaning to "we need a new foundation" as the miracle was based on Alma's despair and fear for her family but Mirabel finds the new one in the empowerment and trust of her loved ones. This is also why Mirabel did not get a gift as she has everything she needs and is the one giving the gifts. Also people weirdly say she will take over from Alma but she already has in the end of the movie.
@michaelklaus
@michaelklaus Месяц назад
If you really wanna hear a fan theory: Casita is a time traveler. It will one day go back to a time before it was build to give Alma a home.
@ericaperez6287

Abuela is just the Spanish word for grandmother, her first name is Alma. Also, look up images of the Caño Cristales. That is the river Alma and Mirabel are standing in hugging during the song that makes everyone cry. It's called the rainbow river because the plant life in it cause it to look several different colors certain times of the year. It's really neat. Antonio really does have the best gift. Notice that Mirabel's dress has a bunch of extra flowers and designs stitched into it, it looks like she did that by hand, and she sewed that stuffed animal for Antonio. I think her gift was that she was the thread that wove the family back together. I just hope she got a better room than the nursery in the new house.

"Is this getting a sequel?" I don't think a sequel movie would work, since I can't think of another major conflict that could come up and make it worth it. However, a sequel series, focusing on lower stakes drama that gives room to explore all the characters could be incredible.
@RubyMadigan
@RubyMadigan Месяц назад
The theory is that Mirabel is to be the new matriarch, taking over from Abuela some day. After all Abuela doesn't have a specific gift and like with Mirabel, the house listens to her. The gift needs to be looked after by someone who does not have magic It's interesting to me that the problem between Mirabel and Isabella is simple jealousy. Isa doesn't get angry until Mirabel calls her selfish. Isa has been putting her own wishes aside for the sake of the family since she was born. She is jealous of Mirabel because she can be free in a way that Isa can't. While Mirabel is jealous of Isa because she gets the attention and seemingly has this wonderful life
@arsasale4564
@arsasale4564 Месяц назад
For me that is the more plausible theory because if you look at the end of the movie, when they are rebuilding casita, Camilo drops the bucket and looks at Mirabel with fear, like waiting to be scolded. It’s like he sees Mirabel as an authority figure despite being close in age. 😊

So many tiny details both spoken and shown that make this movie so much better than what is shown on the surface. Like super hearing Delores covering her ears during fireworks, how the grandmother never really moves past her grief to the point she is so stuck in it she arranges the perfect marriage for the perfect granddaughter ( who looks like she did when younger), to a buff hunk (that looks a lot like a buff Version of her departed husband), bc what a perfect life they will have (a life she should have had with her husband), how Maribel’s eyesight isn’t cured by her mom’s cooking, showing mom can only heal injuries not genetics. How there are butterflies everywhere in the design of the house and clothing and its butterflies that symbolize the tragedy and healing of generational trauma. *chef kiss*

I'm so glad you understand Abuela. I don't even have to explain it like I have on so many videos, you already completely understand the complexity and conflict of the family dynamic. So many people hate Abuela Alma and villainize her and act like she doesn't deserve redemption. Nobody is perfect, but she apologizes and works to reconnect with her family and (literally) rebuild it. You couldn't ask for a better resolution to generational trauma.

my favorite of the songs is actually Surface Pressure, the one Luisa (the strong sister) sings. If you look past the whole crazy donkey situation and upbeat melody, and actually listen to the lyrics, it's actually a heart breaking song about the pressure of being the "responsible" sibling in the family, and how everyone is counting on you to carry the whole responsibility without giving a second thought to how YOU are feeling. it's a song that has broken many a reactor into tears, relating to the lyrics.

One of my favourite design things about this is the way they use colour to help you keep track of the family connections. All Pepa's branch of the family wear warm tones, reds and yellows, Julietta's branch wear cool toned blues and purples, Bruno is in the middle of his sisters in green, and Abuela wears red but a cool toned red.
@fightingfaerie
@fightingfaerie Месяц назад
Pepa is more yellow and orange. Julietta is different shades of blue. Abuela wears a purple/maroon. Additionally Isabella is the only one not following the family color scheme, because she is wearing purple, like Abuela. Showing how Abuela is projecting herself onto Isabella.
@MrsLauraD
@MrsLauraD Месяц назад
"A house divided cannot stand." The house was cracking because the family was divided. You rightly state that the individuals' gifts are based on their personalities and/or passions. Mirabel's whole focus is on the family. Her first song is her introducing the family and their gifts. Therefore, her gift is the whole house and caring for the family. Her empathy for her sisters' struggles, Bruno's isolation, and calming Antonio's fears and recognizing his passion shows her focus on others; culminating in understanding her Abuela's trauma.
@dm_dude
@dm_dude Месяц назад
The whole thing with Abuela is everything needs to be perfect and only if they are special they are perfect. It shows the most with Isabella, she threw all her broken dreams on her and molds her into this perfect version of herself. Her fiancée even looks like Petro. But the "a gift just as special as you are" is also so toxic. That means, that the better your gift, the more special you are. And if you have no gift, then you are not special and you are a disappointment. It’s super toxic, but it all stems from Abuelas own trauma, so you can’t be that hard on her. But she is literally the cause of everything going wrong in the family. Everyone just tiptoes around her and wants to make her happy and proud. Louisa is being crushed under all the weight and responsibilities that she shoulders, Isabella forces herself to be perfect to the point where she would marry a guy she doesn’t even like. She even said in her confession: "Everything was perfect. The family was happy. ABUELA was happy." And for everyone else it’s the same. Pepa bottles up her emotions because Abuela doesn’t like her changing the wether. Dolores basically serves as Abuelas earpiece and tells her everything she wants to know about the town. And even Mirabels parents don’t really stand up for her against Abuela. It’s especially noticeable when her Dad found the prophecy. His first thought isn’t: Oh no, Louisa is losing her powers and Mirabel is in a really bad spot right now. I should comfort them right now. No. His first thought is: You did not find this prophecy. Louisa’s gift is not fading. Everything is okay. Abuela wants this night to be perfect, so this night has to be perfect. This family is honestly so screwed up due to generational trauma. But damn do I love this movie.
@dm_dude
@dm_dude Месяц назад
And that’s all the way Abuela knows everything’s not perfect. She knows about the cracks. But she still pretends in front of her family and town. Making Mirabel look crazy or jealous. She cares so much about her perfect little miracle, that she lost regards for everything else.
@fightingfaerie
@fightingfaerie Месяц назад
You mean Isabella. You wrote Luisa forces herself to marry someone she doesn't like. But I do love when her dad does stand up for her against Abuela. "Think of the family!" "I was thinking about my _daughter_ !"

Fun Fact: Mirabel is voiced by Stephanie Beatriz…. AKA Vaggie from Hazbin Hotel. This movie also has a very interesting background, the fact that it takes place in Colombia and how Alma and Pedro were forced out of their original town by “raiders” reveals to us that Abuela’s backstory happens during the “Great Displacement” historic event that happened in the country in 1901. To summarize…. a lot of people in that time were forced to leave their homes because of the internal conflicts between Guerrilla Fighters, Paramilitaries and the Armed Forces of the Colombian Goverment. Millions of people lost their homes…. And here in Encanto we are told the story of Alma Madrigal who survived the raiders of her town in year and received a Miracle. This information also tells us that the movie takes place in the year 1951, or at least in between 1950 and 1960, since abuela Alma mentions that she received the miracle 50 years ago.
@elbruces
@elbruces Месяц назад
I feel like more people would know Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. People being displaced as refugees in Columbia has been happening on and off for the last 100 years. Technically, that war is still going on today, it just flares up from time to time.

They "Don't Talk About Bruno" because him leaving broke Abeula's heart and any mention of him was likely to cause a scene/upset her. It wasn't hateful, it was because bringing it up hurt Abeula (although her coping mechanisms may have been a bit...fiery, as well. Either way, it's the sort of taboo subject that happen in big families out of concern rather than malice.)

I am Dominican-American. Born in the U.S. but both my parents were born in the Dominican Republic. 🇩🇴 Though this movie is set in Colombia, it struck a nerve with me in the most positive way. I identified with the main character, Mirabel so much being that my brother and I have always been considered the weirdos of the family. We are the ones that are most different from any of our relatives, and we were always reminded of that fact by our relatives. By the end of this movie, I was balling with tears. For a long time, no matter how many times I heard the caterpillar song near the end of the film, I couldn't help but cry my eyes out. 🎞🎶🥹😭❤️‍🔥🎶 BTW, my middle name is so incredibly similar to the main character of this animated movie. The beautiful song at the lake was Dos Oruguitas by Sebastian Yatra. The lyric translation is in the closed captioning, but you can find it easily online. I recommend watching the video with the translation because it fits so very well visually. It kills me every time - I still don't know how it didn't win the Oscar that year, it's so beautifully produced and and sung. BTW - Dos Oruguitas translates to 'two caterpillars'. As I'm sure you noticed, butterflies are symbolized throughout the movie.

Nice to see someone pick up on how Isabela's struggle is an actual struggle. Most reactors seem to just hate on her and laugh at the whole "stuck being perfect" thing without giving it a second thought, but having to appear/act "perfect" at everything at all times, that is something genuinely tough to go through. Might be the phrasing of it in the movie that makes people not pick up on it, a shame, really.

Don't worry about getting teary-eyed and emotional - when I watched Encanto with my kids for the first time, I accidentally scared them, they kept asking me why I was crying... 🥲😅 This movie hits you right in the feels, because everything is so real - the family relationships, everyone dealing with their own demons while trying to show the smiling face to the outside world, trying to keep up appearances rather than dealing with everyones insecurities and issues, it all breaking down in shambles and them being able to reconect, realise their mistakes and come out stronger... This is so emotionally powerfull, that even a heart of stone would shed a tear... 😉

I love everything about this movie, but my favorite scene is when Pepa and Julietta see Bruno after 10 years. You kinda have to imagine that with their powers they were close as children, so not being together (for triplets) must have felt like a missing limb, even when they were upset about his visions. And my favorite song is Isa's because I love the idea of the beautiful girl wanting to grow carnivorous / exploding dye plants! And I always assumed when the candle went out that the magic hid inside her until Casita was rebuilt. It assumes that Bruno's visions can't be changed, because it went either way, but the point was if she saved it, it would come back stronger, because the family was stronger.

Mirabels gift is to be the next candle holder (family matriarch) but another way to describe it that I didn’t think of until you said her gift was to bring them back together, reminded me of a quote from the maze runner about one of the main characters- ‘he the glue’ and the same can be said about Mirable as she is the glue that held them together

An interesting yet completely tearjerking fact - *Mirabel* is the villain of the movie. Why is the grandmother so harsh on everyone else? *Because Mirabel keeps trying to be part of the family, thus reminding her grandmother that there's problems with the gift.* If Mirabel had just accepted it and stayed in her place and stopped trying to be part of the family, both literally and emotionally, and had kept out of the way, the grandmother's "OMG EVERYONE MUST BE PERFECT TO MAKE UP FOR HER NOT BEING PERFECT!" shtick wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad... so the family wouldn't be crumbling under the pressure, because the pressure would be less. Sure, Mirabel is the solution... but the problem only exists because she hasn't learned to shut up and keep out, like Bruno did.

i hadn't seen encanto until a few days ago. tarzan was my favorite prior, now it's this. (it would've been impressive to remember all the names & powers after the first song, but it not only establishes more basic premises too, but makes it easier to pick up on names & powers again as the movie continues) bruno & mirabel's parallels as people experiencing a scapegoating / outcasting from the family while being blamed for its problems is very strong & very real. it's interesting how different bruno's power is from anyone else's: he can't really divert it for some desired use, he simply sees truths nobody can change; he also can't just have visions anywhere, so to "help the community" people would have to come to him in his tower, which was likely isolating. the "your future awaits" sign & all the stairs (as well as seemingly everyone being in on the "we don't talk about bruno") sentiment suggest that plenty of people sought out his visions, even when then plenty of people didn't like getting the truth. he probably had the experience repeatedly of someone desperate for a vision from him for help & then having negative reactions, as happens with mirabel asking for another vision. mirabel's role is also seeing the truth & sharing it, trying to address the issues with the magic, house, & family, while already feeling out of place (like bruno did, even though he still had a power) & increasingly being blamed & isolated for this. but also already she was providing support the family needed: she's the one person who can find & encourage antonio, & her message of "you don't have to worry about me" b/c she has her family is a message she needed from her own family members regarding her fears of letting everyone down & not making them proud: even while she can't direct that towards herself, she can extend the support she needs to antonio. you can see her put in bruno's place at antonio's ceremony: she's standing apart from everything, behind a wall, in the shadows, not feeling like she can come out without ruining everything, & only manages it when antonio pleads with her, needing her support. bruno has also obviously been apart from everything, behind walls, and is afraid to emerge for his own sake, but does so to help mirabel (and the rest of the family by extension, of course, but he has the especial support and understanding for her as a very similar and right now very vulnerable family member who needs his help specifically) and in the end he can even try to use his status as the scapegoat, the person who supposedly makes bad things happen, to try to protect mirabel and take all the blame for the house breaking and miracle seemingly ending. he was afraid to face abuela himself simply for his own sake (like rejoining the family) but he would burst onto the scene in front of her & confront her while making himself look even worse (than he thinks she regards him) for the sake of protecting mirabel from being blamed. at that point he really might not have cared what abuela thought of him anymore, insofar as he'd gladly have her hate him than let mirabel be hated instead. it's kind of like the return of the miracle in that moment: bruno doesn't need abuela to have changed & now treat him differently, he'd accept it if he just managed to have sort of sacrificed himself for his niece there, but it's lovely that she does have nothing but love and support for him now; likewise, the family could've been fine without their gifts returning, but it's only a bonus that they do after seeing all the value & help they have without it. there's also the factor that the way bruno is discussed (& depicted) seems to indicate these various ways he can be considered disabled (mirabel not being "gifted", supposedly not able to contribute or belong or be a point of pride in the same way, could be looked at through a lens re: disability) and he's seen as "weird," seen in a negative light, & misinterpreted (badly) in ways beyond his visions, like how bruno's efforts to be friendly & supportive to his sister on her wedding day were interpreted and relayed to us. then dolores' verse may as well be about how it was bruno himself with any & all of his oddities that the family was grappling with & couldn't understand. it's certainly not only all about the visions, and it's very important how the movie allows him to keep being "weird" even as he gets out from behind the walls and is embraced. the message would fall flat if it's not that the family changed, but that bruno became more "normal" before they'd treat him better. instead he can be weird, including if the experiences he's been put through have made him "weirder," and the family can support him anyway, b/c it's not bad, but hurting & losing a family member is. it's great how mirabel & bruno are able to find very crucial support in each other when, on their own, they're getting scapegoated & blamed for the problems of the family, when both of them were the ones seeing things as they are and telling the truth about it. if the refuge that the family should be hinges on recreating the precarity of the outside world (to "preempt" being hurt by that outside world) &/or rather believing a refuge must be where bad things never happen, rather than a place where, when bad things happen, you're helped rather than hurt further, then one way or another you're on your own with problems, to handle yourself & pretend don't even exist. mirabel & bruno supposedly "fail" by being odd ones out who aren't helping the family, aren't making them proud, and then even by being openly unhappy about how things are going, perhaps challenging & disrupting them, & this is supposedly "ruining" things. you can see in the scene where mirabel needs to hug isabela that they get further away from hugging when mirabel's just trying to pretend things are fine, & only when things get "worse" & they argue can truths come out & things change, for the better. same with luisa, where mirabel supposedly makes things worse until luisa confesses her worries, then mirabel feels guilty as luisa struggles more with her powers throughout the movie b/c the conversation with mirabel made the status quo feel more unsustainable. bruno thought he was only making things worse (& learned that people would only see the worst in anything associated with / from him) and internalized that, where unlike what others read into him he knows he's not malicious or causing anyone's futures one way or another, but presumably started to feel something must be inherently wrong with him (as mirabel must have felt in not being given a gift) and been extra preoccupied with warding off bad luck as a result. after not only having these experiences seeing how her sisters in particular are suffering & feel trapped in that, but in seeing how far it went with bruno being so separated from his family, seen so badly by everyone, while so hurt in reality and seeing that as unable to change, puts her in a better place to realize it's not actually that something's wrong with her and she's only hurting people, but that something needs to fundamentally change in the family, a new foundation. but the confrontation and exposure of cracks and hurts and truths looks disastrous and ruinous and it seemed easier to pretend everything has to be fine with what everyone already knew, while the scapegoated outlier family members saw and tried to attend to the cracking of the house. it's just all very real as to whose supposedly "disruptive" presence gets negatively piled on: troublemaking for telling the truth, like if you're an extra vulnerable family member who's not getting the support they need & can't pretend they're okay without it, or even needs to leave because of it, supposedly becoming the "uncaring" one, or someone "creating" problems rather than that the way they're failed by preexisting problems just brings those problems more into the light, & if anything, creates the opportunity for solutions, or certainly improvements anyways, and forever the potential for further ones: it isn't perfect, neither are we. ugh, i could say so much more than i already have even lol, it's so good, and the movie's so excellent and strong in all elements. the characters in this are fantastic and even in the midst of that, bruno is an incredible character. this scapegoated disabled (easily also readable / interpretable as queer (as isabela might be too)) role in this family who is vilified (& even when julieta doesn't say anything negative about bruno directly, her remarks that he lost his way frame him as a fate to be avoided for mirabel after mirabel was "disrupting" by seeing things as they were and telling the truth about them even when that "ruined" a celebration of the family & the miracle supposedly in its ideal form) yet is completely key to mirabel having the perspective and support she needs to be what the family needs. absolutely amazing and so important.

49:21 notice how the house listens to Mirabel & Abuela only. Mirabel wasn’t given a specific gift cause the house chose her as the next caretaker. To take over for Abuela when the time comes. 49:44 love how Jorge saved Bruno. 52:14 put the closed captioning on and they do the english translation to it. It’s about 2 butterflies. 58:50 it showed that when Isabella wasn’t so stressed and worried about being perfect the candle burned brighter. It was going out cause Abuela (as she said in the song) was afraid of losing them and the gift so she held on to tight and made sure they used they gift only one way.

The reason why Maribel did not get a gift was because in the end she was supposed to take the replacement of the candle she was supposed to be the light of the family the candle head to go because of the fact that the family especially abuela was so dependent on the candle providing them their powers and losing sight of valuing family over the candle so finally without the candle being in the picture the family can focus on each other and being a family to produce magic powers amongst themselves

There are 2 earlier scenes in the movie that get mirrored later on. 1st is during the intro version of Abuela telling young Mirabel about getting the Encanto, you see the gouse use the windows to wave at Abuela and then she smiles and waves back. The house waves to Mirabel the same way after the magic is restored and she waves back in the same way. 2nd is that at first Mirabel leads Antonio to his door by signaling with a nod. At the end of thw movie, Antonia leads Mirabel to thw door of Casita nodding the same way and still walking arm in arm.

I think the cracks in the physical house was such a perfect metaphor for the "cracks" in the family unit. you can plaster over the cracks (problems) and hide them from view, but they are still there, likely worsening under the surface. until you do the inevitable work of stripping it down and repairing the foundation (fully addressing the problems) and the longer you try to ignore it and cover it up, the harder it is to fix it. In the end the entire house (family unit) had to crumble and be fully rebuilt.

The animation is absolutely gorgeous in it, and the songs are just plain epic. The opening is on the same level of incredibleness as that of the Lion King. I would really, REALLY, recommend watching it. Also really recommend the Disney classics Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Yes, they're a bit old and might seem a bit boring to some modern audiences, but they are just absolute classic fairytale Disney princess movies. Also for more recent releases recommend Lilo & Stitch, Moana and Turning Red. These are just my recommendations, and they are pretty biased because these are some of my all time favourite movies. Since it isn't expressed in dialog it sadly went over many viewers heads that Mirable always understood the gifts better than Alma. She could predict Antonio's gift being about animals because they all align. Peppa's mood changes like the weather and her moods change the weather. Juliette cares for everyone and what's them to be healthy so her food heals. Bruno worries about the future and he sees the future. Dolores indeed loves gossip so she can hear all the secrets. Isabella loves to see things grow and Luisa wants to take all their burdens on her shoulders. Which leaves us with Camilo who was said in a tweet to be that theater kid who likes to take on different roles.

This was a really good movie, and it hit especially hard as a latino. It's also true that there's no true villain, other than generational trauma; in fact, a joke I really like is people saying that our generation is more obsessed with getting an apology from our family over saving the world. Regarding my favorite song, I'll have to echo other people and say it's "Surface Pressure". I feel like the message really resonates with me (btw, I saw you apologize for "not getting it" in the moment; you're good, don't worry) and I really like the instrumentation. My favorite Disney movie is The Little Mermaid, though Encanto shot up right behind it as soon as I saw it. And I really can't pick a favorite song! Though as a kid Pink Elephants on Parade totally freaked me out. (As did Heffalumps and Woozles from Winnie the Pooh, and one of the Disney park nighttime shows did a mashup of those two songs...) One neat little bit is how the triplets' gifts are past-present-future. Julietta heals injuries that happened in the past, Pepa affects the weather of the present, and Bruno sees the future. And the number 3 is huuuuge symbolically in the movie, though it takes a knowledge of musical theory to get all of it. (There's a series of videos by Howard Ho on here, and he specifically talks about the role of 3 in the video analyzing Dos Oruguitas.) Fun little easter egg-- during We Don't Talk About Bruno, when Dolores is singing her first part, you can see Bruno in the background up on the second level, dancing along.

I subscribe to the theory that Mirabel is the next Matriarch of the family, and that just like Abuela's "Gift" was running the Old Casita and providing new Powers and Doors for the family, Mirabel is the new Matriarch of the New Casita and will shepherd the Madrigal family into the new future where the Encanto is no longer cloistered and remote, but now with the cleft in the mountain, it is open once more to the outside world because the Encanto learned to look to rely on each other, powers or not. Community is the answer to political strife, and the thing that prevents simple disagreements from becoming violent conflict in the first place. There are a lot of layers of symbols in the work, intentional or not, and it's really one of the more nuanced and fascinating stories Disney has ever told because of it. This mirrors Latin American literature quite extensively, with the magic realism of the Mexican writers of 'the Boom' period having great influence all up and down Latin America.
