I thought Davinci Colour Managed was magic until I saw what it did to Fusion titles, making them grey. Do you have a solution to that? Thanks for all your work on these videos. They’re really helpful.
Awesome stuff as always. Hey, instead of doing the grid overlay to match eye-lines, what if you just lowered the opacity of the top adjustment layer so you could see the position of the eyes in the clip below then adjusted position? Seems a bit easier than adding that additional grid effect and changing its parameters
Heck yeah Phillip! This is a great tip and I honestly hadn't thought of doing it that way. Much faster and simpler! Thanks for sharing. The grid is still great for layouts and horizon lines, but love this idea of roughly matching up eyelines. Solid!
DR moved where the "Show Power Bins" option is located. You have to click the 3 dots in the upper right of your media pool. Great feature, just hard to find. Love your videos Chadwick! Fast, and awesome!
It is so good to see you Chadwick. Thank you for sharing your power tips. Your videos really help take editing to the next level. For me, your edit page ideas like your "15 second" techniques open up new ways on how creatively think about an edit. Thank you for taking the time to make and share these videos.
Thanks Kevin, great to hear from you. I'm glad you like that 15 second cutdown trick, I remember the first time an editor, his name was Nick, showed me how he basically did that with a title or some generator that was muted and I've used it ever since.
Great stuff! I am new to Davinci (I love it so much more than Premiere, especially that you pay for it once and that's it), and this video helped me out tremendously. It made my editing so much easier... . Thanks a lot! Subscribed...
Dude, I saw the title about adjustment layers and I just freaking yawned. Then I watched it and man you really showed me a timesaver. I also really like your style. And, a subscriber is born! Now, off to another one of your videos.
Good material here...as a newly converted cutter (started migrating from Adobe - of course) it's fun. It's like discovering how to edit all over again. I like it. What's different? This software runs soooooooo much smoother and less buggy than Adobe.
Thanks for this! Could you talk about 'Better Meta Data Management' or 'Meta Data Workflow' in DR. I love editing in DR but miss how easy meta data tagging "keywording" in FCP is.
Thanks Martinho, I appreciate the suggestions. I think you're right there is a big need for Fusion tips so as I'm learning that part of Resolve I'll be sharing interesting things. Color is the backbone of resolve so lots to come there - but I would like to point out 2 channels that are incredibly valuable to check out. My friend Darren here - ru-vid.com and Cullen is the essential color scientist that has incredibly detailed insights - ru-vid.com
Nice job - I’m a pro editor that switched to resolve from premier for the majority of my projects last year and this taught me some fun quirks. You got a sub from me 🔥🙏
Nice vid and edit. One thing that stinks about grading on the adjustment clips is that you lose the ability to do any tracking. Thanks for the tip on using the Grid...I didn't know about that.
6:12 is there a way to remote grade an adjustment layer? I want to color correct 1 adjustment clip across multiple timelines, similar if if was the same video clip using remote grade.
Great, thank you for these pro tips! I love your videos! :) Right now i really have a question and need help... Maybe anybode else has also my problem? -> I can`t find a solution for my problem with "Media Management" - "Copy Used Media And Trim(...)". To save hard drive space after I finished cutting I want to keep only used media and resize them to only used parts. But if I try, I get uncompleted snippets. One used part for example is 15 seconds long but after I used the "trim function" the resized file is only 8 seconds and the rest is marked as "media offline". Maybe a bug? Don't know. But if it happend: how can I restore it back to the complete file (relink or replace the trimmed copy by the orginal whole clip)...
great tutorial thanks, any tips regarding using compound clips and audio sync ? I have footage with interviews and 4 tracks that get messy timelines. need a cleaner way to edit. butalll tracks LAVS and BOOM needed for audio online
Thanks for the tutorial! I love that you include some helpful shortcuts here and there in your videos but would it be possible to put the most important ones in one video? Would be a very clean overview.
I love this feedback so much Mathis and I think what I'll do on this next tutorial I'm editing this weekend is put them all on an end screen slide that you can screen capture. Thanks!
@@CreativeVideoTips that's a good idea, very easy to collect helpful shortcuts! Thanks a lot. Keep doing what you're doing, I appreciate your work a lot!
A special instance of object tracking is to track a fixed object throughout a long time clip. for example, in a messy room there is a TV showing something on the screen. Both the camera and the TV set are fixed in position. how to mask the TV set and remove all the messy room surroundings?although the object tracking feature can be used in this circumstance, but it is time consuming for the fix object masking. is there any easier way which is based on objective recognization algorithm rather than the color qualifier?
As for suggestions - and maybe it's not your usual theme - but I'd be curious to see comparison of Resolve tools for tracking, matte, roto and paint, with things like Mocha and Silhouette.
I love these ideas and making note. I would say don't expect anything soon on these compositing tools though as I don't have a copy of mocha or silhouette on any system right now. I am hoping to do more fusion stuff this year though.
Ok random question, how do you set up you timeline so different tracks are expanded to different heights? Like one audio track expanded while another is collapsed?
great question Chase and super important to know - hold shift while scroll wheel or 2 finger track pad drag changes all the heights - but for a single track, just drag the mouse between tracks in the header area and you'll get a resize indicator. Just pull this down to expand the track above it.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thank you! So, I can nudge the audio by sub-frames, but not the video? I will re-listen to the tute. Does Resolve have a function which recognizes and matches audio from different clips to align in the timeline? My second cameraman is recording short shots of closeups while the main camera records the entire performance. How do I line them all up?
How do you lengthen or shorten the effect without having to go in and adjust all the key frames individually? That is the only issue i'veh ad using this method
Great video, Chadwick! I use saved/named Adjustment Clips to punch into different areas, so that I can have a wide shot and then cut to myself, a shot just my guests or each guest individually. I also have at least one additional camera, so I use multi cam editing. What I’d love to be able to do is set up my adjustment clips as cameras and switch between them while playing through the video, the same as I do currently with the Cam 1 and Cam 2 buttons on the Speed Editor keyboard. Any tips or ideas?
I just figured out a way to do it. I created separate timelines with the adjustment clip added for each desired camera angle (Timeline-Wide, Timeline-Host, Timeline-Guests, Timeline-Guest1, etc.). Then I used these timelines to create a multicam timeline (Timelines within a timeline). I watched your video on how to convert a timeline to multicam. Thank you for the inspiration.
So this failed! When I create a multicam clip with the 6 timelines that I created, it created the multicam timeline, but when I tap [Sync] (or try to open the Sync Bin with the SE keyboard) it tells me “No synced clips”. I’ve tried syncing with Sound (it’s the same audio in each timeline) and In (I added an In point at the start of each timeline) and nothing works. Any ideas? In the past I’ve simply had the wide shot in V1 and added different adjustment clips in V2. It is SLOW :(
Maybe make a tutorial how to start to préparé all your videos to cut and manage them on thé timeline and add music for thé transision. Kind of dummy tutorial how to start
Great quick tips and very helpful for someone coming over from Premiere. I've just started exploring the Fusion effects in Resolve. Very different way of working with effects coming from Premiere and After Effects. Is there a way to do automated mask and planar tracking in Resolve? Also general motion and camera tracking tutorials would be great as well. Thanks!
Well, just hit the subscribe button. It’s funny how adobe in premiere pro have “adjustment layers” and theoretically they should work exactly like adjustment clips in Resolve but they don’t. Adobe should stop adding features and instead send out a version of premiere pro with features that ACTUALLY work instead of cramming things and never getting them to really work.
Thanks so much Carlos, welcome to the channel. I feel your frustration with them shipping buggy software. Blackmagic isn't free from doing this too, but they seem to be less quick to jump the gun on on lesser tested features. It's uncommon, even in betas for them to release any junk.
@@CreativeVideoTips definitely agree. I've been using Resolve for the past few years and it seems they add features that people will actually use as opposed to Premiere. A few years ago I would have said Premiere was "groundbreaking" with some features but unfortunately none of those "groundbreaking" features really work. I mean, the dumbest thing in the world is to add the adjustment layer and not be able to actually adjust anything. You have to add an effect to it to allow it to work. Also, I used to edit for a digital company a few years ago called Great Big Story. I remember that the adjustment layers worked better then than they do now. Sorry for venting but it's extremely frustrating when you have to do a workaround to make something work on a software that's been out in the market for so many years. Unfortunately, the company I work for now is gung-ho on Premiere =( so I'll have to wait until someone higher up on the food chain decides to make changes. until then... Keep churning out those videos. Love the tips.
OK. Advanced adjustment clip question: An adjustment clip will affect all the tracks BELOW the clip, but not those above. This is obviously useful. But what about affecting some, but not all of the tracks below? Can that be done? For example: Track 1 contains a background which needs to stay consistent for the whole timeline, no matter what I do to the tracks above. I want to use my adjustment clip (on track 5) to affect tracks 4, 3 and 2, but not track one. Can this be done? This is a question I'm asking various Resolve tutorials, no answers yet.
Maico has the answer below - but this is exactly a feature I'd love to see. No NLE's currently do this but it's been in photoshop for years and called a clipping mask. Blackmagic would say to do a compound clip or composite the effect in fusion, but it does seem like a simple ask to have it only attach to a set of layers, but not all of them. Great idea, but sorry no clear solution without a workaround.
I hate when you compound clip a clip with fusion transitions, it adds black frames to the entire clip even if the transition is just in the text for example
Hi there! First... thanks for the awesome videos to help a NEWBIE like me! Next I have a quick question for a problem I haven't been able to solve. I have a project that I had rendered. I later lost the original .mov file that I shot and the DRP backup from a major computer failure. I had to buy a new Macmini. Is there a way to split rendered sound.... the audio talking from the music track that have been merged? All I can find is how to seperate Audio from Video and that is NOT what I need... ;) If this is possible PLEASE HELP! HAHA. TIA
Fusion Question. How do you make fusion clips longer?. The obvious way would be in the output node, but can’t find it there, and I have tried to drag expand all the other nodes as well, but with no luck, it drives me crazy, I have been working with AE for 20 years and you just make the comp longer in settings, but with fusion a can’t figure it out. It is probably basic, but have tried to find the answers, but there is not many of the on the topic. So maybe a tutorial about how to make fusion clips longer, when you already have made the stuff, you want to ,but found out that you made the thing 10 seconds to short. And if there is more then one way, please show them “all”. And thanks for a great channel, have been stopping by a few times for all your other great tips 👌.
I've got a question about something and it would be great if you or someone else could help. Sometimes when I cut to the next part in the my video it hitches for a second then continues. Anybody know what to do?
Another banger Chadwick! One thing, I recreated the Whip pan, placed the adjusted clip in my powerbin, but when I add it to the timeline from there to get the same desired effect it doesnt work. It shows the keyframes in the spline editor when I open it up in fusion, but It doesnt seem to do the effect. Any ideas why?
Thanks Maico, I have an idea of why it might not be working. Are you on version 17 of resolve? If so there was a bug with keyframes in version 17 with adjustment clips with a simple workaround. LMK and I'll point you to the fix.
I am at the moment of transition from Pr Pro to DaVinci and watch lots of tutorials. Just personal observation: DaVinci gurus vs Pr Pro gurus it's like another Nation. Both great, no offense, but different in some aspects. Jut one wish: keep tutorials consise. You know: time is money! 😊
I've come across a question: if I'm using source clips with input sizing and then I put an adjustment layer above it, I'm finding it incredibly difficult to get proper tracking information and 1:1 sizing/positioning for something like a power window blur. Because the adjustment layer can't use the source clip underneath for tracking, I need create and track the power window on the clip first and then move it to the adjustment layer, which introduces an inconsistency. Doing this without input sizing worked, so I've narrowed it down to that. I've tried this with an adj clip as well as a contained version of an adj clip for testing purposes, but I got the same result. Do you know of any workarounds via this adjustment layer workflow to compensate for input sizing? For notation's sake: both Fusion and the removal of input sizing aren't available options given the current workflow and this is using Resolve 17. Thanks man!
Hi, I have a possible guess as to why this might not work. Is your timeline the same resolution as the clip? Adjustment clips always take on the resolution of the timeline, so the translations wouldn't match if that was the case.
@@CreativeVideoTips yup, timeline resolution is source clip resolution. That’s the answer we were kicking around as well, but didn’t know for sure. Thanks so much, man! I really appreciate it.
Wait you're telling me i don't need to apply effect directly onto clips but instead use a adjustment clip to do all my effects incase i mess up something directly on the clip????
I appreciate this feedback. I’m testing different mics out and neglected to account for that on this Octava. Please take a listen to my upcoming video I hope to post later this week to see if it’s improved.
Great vid as usual. Since you invited me to suggest future videos here I go. - Audio for RU-vid and LUFS should I be setting my Voice Over at -16 LUFS? Is there a way to do that without a plug-in? I use iZotope’s Ozone for this. - Background songs in YT videos that aren’t long enough for the video aka extending them. Anything better to do other than try and match the beats by cutting them and overlapping? - A quick way of matching (as best as possible) camera footage that’s not in LOG? - Archiving projects/databases Sorry if you’ve covered these before and I missed them.
Thanks so much! These are great ideas for future follow up videos. I do have some that might help you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Rp-6F8SWFSY.html - LUFs in Fairlight -16 is great. I push my whole mix down to -15 currently and you can go up to -14 for RU-vid. Extending songs - nothing other than what you mention, Remix is an Adobe feature from Audition that just was added to premiere this year and can do this. Shot matching is for sure a topic I'll cover this year, but haven't yet. Archiving here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TsKwaJtQFA0.html and more recently here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KtQsF-tZiYQ.html I really appreciate you taking the time to comment with some great ideas, you aren't the only one that needs guidance in these areas so it will help a lot of people.
You are awesome bro... I have been looking to get the best video on how to use adjustment clip, and finnaly I found it Thank you so much please make a video on transitions
Great video talking and moving a little fast for beginners but very useful thank u. My opinion if u wanna teach newbies slow it down a little please some of us don’t process things faster then others
