The movie that fascinated a generation of filmmakers: Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and Martin Scorsese. Well, the movie that inspired that movie. The Thief of Bagdad is a 1924 American fantasy film directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Douglas Fairbanks. Ahmed is a lowly thief running around the streets of ancient Baghdad. However, he becomes entranced by the imperial princess and vows to win her. This begins an adventure that pits him against men, monsters, and enough myths to fill a thousand and one Arabian nights. The film features incredible effects and art direction, featuring the works of such luminaries as Arthur Edison and William Cameron Menzies. It didn't win any Oscars because the Oscars weren't invented yet, duh.
