I was thinking the same thing, 2700 dollars and you have to pay monthly to use all the features, that amount of money makes Linus’s solution seem almost appealing 😂
@@jamest6504 Thank you, I love the idea of this, but the price and subscription services is absurd. I think I'm going to pick up the 700 dollar version of the chili sleep, looks like exactly what I want.
I remember when Linus was categorically against buying a product that required a subscription fee. But Eight Sleep requires a minimum 1 year subscription for a MATTRESS PAD
@@ItzAwsomeWasTaken The 1 year subscription fee is baked into the initial price and then after a year you have to pay to retain features. It may just automatically charge you, or it could just lock you out of certain features after the 1 year period

Now we know why Linus retired from CEO position. He just needs more time to work on watercooling every single item in his house. Stay tuned for watercooled kitchen table, watercooled and overclocked TV remote, watercooled sandals!
Yup, Linus is best on camera and thankfully he knows that, many new things he has shown he can expand on beyond tech because he knows how to give ideas a very good presentation and it translates very well into new things he is only just starting out with.

Yes, "Alex and Linus DIY a sponsor's product" is _definitely_ a series that needs to exist! And tbh, a sponsor must _love_ how much it shows off the quality of their product design process when you see the difference between what their product can do and what these two can cook up
It's also good for the sponsors in a sense to showcase some of what goes into actually making said product. Often times people think a product is simple, and fail to realize what truly goes into making the product.
100% behind this idea. Not only do we get to watch them do dumb shit, but the sponsor also gets to prove all of those "I bet I could DIY this for half the cost" dudes wrong. Plus, if they *actually* manage to DIY it for half the cost then the sponsor just paid to advertise that fact lol.
@@-_JayR_- Except they should pick their sponsors more carefully. They charge 17-27€ a month extra ontop of the enormous price of the bed for a stupid subscription. Should immediately blacklist them as a sponsor IMO
@@thaddeusk It is still part of the price and they hide it. The reason they are doing that also includes preying on those that forget they have it. Part of that scheme includes paying per year, if you didn't read properly on purchase, by the time you notice there's a subscription running, it's all too late, you paid for another year. They tick all the boxes of being a malicious company.
"Your comfort is not the priority. The pure watts we can extract from your body is." That might be the most engineer thing Alex has ever said on this channel.
I know right? At the beginning of the video when they're like "APP with subscription!" my immediate response is "that's eeeevilll..." I would love to see, done for real no joke, a series on "here's this IOT subscription based piece of garbage and how to do it DIY on your own term as good or better."
Yeah, I had a "Hold up..." moment when he mentioned the subscription service. It's not like the thing is cheap. Edit: I clicked through. $2,500 and then $24/mo (billed as $288 annually). Hard pass.
He's probably been in a situation like this before. I didn't know my friend was allergic to peach, and he had some in the cocktails I picked up for the everyone thank god he had an epipen on him and administered in time we took him to the hospital just to be safe. i was so scared never again I always ask for allergies now
PLEASE DO MORE!!!! The idea of alex + linus trying to build the sponsor's product in a day is such an awesome and funny concept please make this a thing
The other bonus of their DIY is the fact you don't have to pay a monthly subscription for your cooler pad. There area other companies that do this, for around these same price point that don't require you to buy a monthly subscription for an app to control you cooling pad
Honestly, the "Linus and Alex DIY a Sponsor's Product" is SUCH a good idea for a series! This is a fantastic way to advertise for sponsors, like genuinely. Please please please do more of these!
Wifi going down and losing the cooling of your bed is a sign we're living in the worst timeline. The insanity of that concept would kill a man from the 50s.
From the sounds of what the subscription is about, you'd still have the cooling, it'd just be manual. The subscription is *very* dumb, but it's not essential to make the basic functionality work.
@@Naokarmayes, it is. If you go to the website, it's a hard requirement to get 1 or 3 years to have access to the cooling/heating controls. Says it right on their website.
Imagine paying like 3 grand for a mattress cover and still needing to pay 30$ a month to use all of it's builtin features... why is the world this way?! Also, your house looks very lovely! Is that some new exterior paint?! lmao
Here is a positive twist on this ;) . Its an easy way to spot cash grabs and not invest your time and money in these projects/companies etc. Imagine if the scam was more subtle. There would first be a recall then a statement then an investigation then 97 000 youtubers will make a story on it and THEN it will become obvious. The more shocking part is that this video only has 140 down votes. Everyone in this comment section is complaining about the sponsor. Yet nobody takes the step to make it clear to LTT that such a sponsorship is not acceptable 🤷🏼♀️

I have an eight sleep bed. It was awesome. Until literally last night. Vinyl tore a tiny seam, woke up in a soaked bed. Warranty up last year, so they told me this morning “too bad so sad.” 3 grand for a bed system that is now useless after just a little over two years. Fuck 8 sleep.
Yup. IT WILL LEAK! It's not a matter of if. I've had mine for 3 months and already had a small leak. Absolute joke for the price you pay and zero warranty support. The CEO of EightSleep even went as far as to make their subreddit /r/eightsleep private (its now community owned and public again) because of the amount of people reporting leaks. Great idea, horrible execution.

Smart TVs have included cameras and microphones for tvs where those aren't features for years. The NSA also knows exactly how to take advantage of it. Not that they aren't also listening and recording so you can be targeted for advertising. I know someone who got themselves in trouble and was absolutely shocked by what came up in discovery. Mind you this was an innocent person who didn't go to prison or even end up going to trial. Everything in his house hooked to the internet was used to gather evidence. Calling it gathering evidence though is wrong. It was just data until someone suspected him of something he didn't do then it all became available to use against him. Though honestly it was the spying that saved him. The funny thing is all the spying can interfere with other spying really easy. They don't get to test it all that well for errors caused by multiple spying going on. So people's phones and stuff do act weird and the old saw that oh my phone is acting weird it must be tapped is very true sometimes.
its okay, just dont extend the subscription of the $2000+ topper. it stops working then but you can cut off the water hoses with regular scissors or a kitchen knife. easy peasy 5head move
The mandatory monthly subscription ($15/month MINIMUM) is an absolute deal breaker. I have a bed chiller from their competitor and the only monthly subscription I pay to use it is my electricity bill.
I've had the bed for about a year now and don't pay anything to use the app. There are premium services, but I get to control the temperature at any time, set the temperature to start and stop at any time automatically, have it automatically adjust temperature throughout the night, and the app tells me my heart-rate as I slept. The subscription is absolutely not mandatory.
The topper in Europe cost about 2700€, about the same as a mini split AC including installation. But that is also a heat pump that can affordably heat the room in winter.
It really feels like these two get in the same room and suddenly they start squabbling over a single shared brain cell. It's absolutely hilarious and I am here for it.
There is nothing weird about this. I'd bet thoughts like this are very normal. We just don't talk about it because there is no good way to do it right now, unless you already have a water mattress. One thing is for sure it's not weird, more like cocky and funny.
I love how unprepared Alex's scripts are. It makes for a very entertaining video. Although I imagine it's frustrating for his boss at a very corporate company expecting a certain level of performance from their employees. I feel like Alex reminds LMG that they are a RU-vid channel, not a corporate conglomerate. Good job Alex! Keep up the great work... Or I guess... the sub par work... We love it!
I love that too, while lmg is very good at scripted videos linus's interactions with jake, luke and alex are my favourite because they are the ones that go off script and are way funnier.
Just for insights regarding the "dirt": That yellow-ish stuff between the layers of the DIY topper is probably not dirt. My father is a craftsman and he uses industrial glue (the strong smelling one lol) to glue different kind of textiles, but majorly furniture grade foams, together. That glue is somewhat yellow-green and turns darker yellow when drying, what makes it look like dirt/stain/whatever. Usually though, this gets hidden by leather and/or other materials and therefor doesn't matter in most cases. Also the smell disappears completely when exposed to air for a longer period of time which makes it even more seem like dirt.
Can I just give credit to the camera man here. Trying to follow you doing something this crazy while being in a space not designed for filming and doing such a great job is impressive.
Doesn't have to feel cold. The foam absorbs the heat, and the tubing will carry it away whether it's touching you or not. You're laying there a long time. You can put it as far back as you want, or even run it through the mattress. It'll still work with the right flow. Similar systems are sold pre-built. I'll be getting or making one when I pick up a new mattress soon. Simple sensors in the topper are enough to have a machine keep the bed at a desired temperature. Quite a bit of this stuff is just available at aquarium shops; sensors and all.
Just next time go with a sponsor that's not a terrible predatory company selling a subscription service mattress that stops working the millisecond it realizes it lost its connection to the cloud server
normally the Alex videos frustrate me with the lack of preparation and immense amounts of jank. but this format where you can compare it to a sponsored product works for me. also a cool way to explore the problems the product solves and any neat engineering ideas.
@@daylen577 Yeah this pretty much describes most companies now, with subscription models - pretty soon even your toaster will require a subscription :P
Ah yes. The monthly subscription bed - just what I needed. Up next the subscription toilet. "Honey the toilet says it off-line due to subscription non-payment."
you dont have to extend the subscription after the first mandatory year of "membership". just cut off the water hoses with a regular kitchen knife and enjoy the topper on any of your premium mattresses without paying for it monthly/yearly. easy peasy 5head move and btw: never heard of a piss bottle? just have some creativity man, cant you even outsmart your smart toilet?!
@I killed that beard guy That already exists. It was for a motorcycle airbag vest thingy. If it detected you were in a crash, it would only activate if you were still paying the subscription.

Alex's sheer delight at having ridiculous ideas is probably the best part of the video. The noise and run he made to go get the Quick 220...perfection.
Subscription monthly for my bed? $25 a month is crazy for an app on my bed. Also, it is kind of creepy to have all the information from my sleep habits stored on some database. I'm sure with the sensors their able to tell everything that happens in the bed. More importantly, why do I need a subscription for my bed? I was actually going to purchase one of these until it said the app was mandatory for the first year. They need to change that. I'm sure there's a lot of people like myself who would benefit from a product like this, were ready to purchase, and stopped because of the monthly fee and privacy concerns.
you can bet it stops working when you dont extend the "membeship" after the first year. because its so easy to restrict: no membership extension = no log in profile = no log in = no turning on of that fucking abomination of an overpriced cooling mattress. i send Eight Sleep an email and asked what would happen if i dont extend the mebership after a year. lets see if they even answer my mail. i bet they wont, because it would be a fucking scam to have this overpriced shit being useless after a year. the idea alone is beyond insane! i must be in a simulation...a BAD one!
I'm glad you took the time to cover the inefficiency of Peltiers in all applications aside from direct conduction to the skin. This has legitimised by Environment suit powered by Peltiers for Project: MJOLNIR!

I actually wouldnt hate this kinda sponsor integration more often, this is quite fun and having the sponsor isnt that abrasive. You trying to beat them with Alex and maybe the other engineers makes good janky content
I love how Alex gives dwight feeling sometimes, and the fact that he explains and keeps looking at the camera, is priceless. Water cooling things with Alex is the best
I’m sure the sponsor loves this as it makes their own product seem vastly superior than Alex & Linus’s effort. Also Yvonne Has the patience of a saint for all of her husbands crazy content schemes
It might be, but so are other competitors products - and those do not require a 17-27€ monthly subscription to use your bed cooling. Another commentor recommended ChilliSleep and they are even half as cheap as the sponsor's base price
you can lay a heating blanket down on low and lay over that if you really wanted to for any reason, have done it in winter, honestly not that bad and better heat distribution IMO than covering yourself with it as that tends to get too hot
They were ridiculously overcomplicating the installation in the foam. Should we cut it with a razor blade for clean precise cut? Nah let's burn through it with a hot rod instead because I'd like a little char on my mattress topper. Should we use hot glue or silicone nah let's use a 2 part mixture that's not even capable of mixing when the layers of foam are together. 😆
@@GrabLifeByDaPoosy if CA is cyanoacrylate they don't need an activator, that just seal it more fast but is just water, on some point the ambient humidity go to do the work
I freaking love Alex cuz he's just pure engineer brain the whole time. You can tell he absolutely did not notice that it wouldn't be comfortable and only cared about the temperature.
If you and your partner don't have the same comfort metrics, you should demand a zone for each. Your buddy is solid for making sure to keep two zones a feature.
This could really be a great series. If you inevitably fail, you prove the superiority of the sponsor, and if by some miracle you succeed, you give them better intel for improvements. Plus, it's hilarious.
Regardless on how thick the insulation is, if you give it heat or pull out heat it will still heat and cold. The insulation just slows/delays the process. It doesn't stop it. Inevitably, no matter what the same amount of energy will eventually transfer to reach equilibrium. And the higher the temperature differential, the faster the process of energy transfer occurs. Just something to keep in mind.
i love how the eight sleeps unit still uses a standard Noctua cooler lol, also i love what the editors did with drawing the house instead of just blurring it that was funny xD
@@jemiebridges3197 They did show the exterior of the house in the past though. I don't see a reason to do it now, since the exterior has been leaked already.
I made this 15 years ago and it is still working today. 1st use 5/16 silicone tubing, I did not cut the mattress pad, I sewed it to a water bed sheet in a loop system using only 4 separate lines on a water header. I use an aquarium pump reduced down to fit the lines. 1st design I used a heater core from a car and a fan (on top above water line) to cool the water all in a bucket from lowes. I would freeze a few water bottles and drop them in the bucket of water at night. After a year, I upgraded to a small soda chiller from target/walmart (on sell for $18, it is a small refrigerator that cools a 6 pack). Store a small tank inside of little cooler, and it water gets really really cold, Drill 2 holes on the cooler 1 return and 1 outlet, hook up aquarium pump to outlet side going to manifold, each line is adjusted to make sure you have enough water pressure on your return line back to cooler. The water barely moves, by the time it returns to the cooler it is warm but mixes with the freezing water. Complete system is a little bigger than a shoe box, fits under bed and only have 2 main lines attached to water header that you can see. Water header and all lines sewn into sheet covered up. Only problem, it sweats and your sheet gets wet/ damp. I use it as a cooling sheet/blanket and the temp gets way to cold so you have to slow the water pressure down to where it barely moves or you will freeze. Gets down to like 40 f or 4C. I keep it around 58f or 14c. Total cost was like $40 years ago. A tip, Use waterproof mattress cover to protect your mattress so it will not mildew.
Alex and Linus are so funny together because of the sheer recklessness and stupidity of the ideas they do that actually work. Especially when Alex try’s to tell something to Linus and Linus just gives up. 😂😂
Really fun show concept - would love to see more like this! 1) You don't just showcase a product, by creating a one-day build version you also demonstrate some of the concepts behind its operation in a fun way 2) Fun build video - always good 3) Jank-geneering = always a win
When I was about 16, which is many years ago, I made my own refrigerated bed with the stuff from a refrigerator where I had flattened the plate that are in many little older refrigerators and just put it under a thin sheet of isolation in the bed. Me and my back had never been that cool during the summer when it was scorching hot in the room. A year later I made my worn AC for the room from scratch and It had way more power than I needed since it became even too cold in the room but worked really well. And it was no doubt the first that used R290 as the refrigerator gas (really LPG) since that was not really use back than commercially but is today.
Random idea for Cooling Bed V2 Instead of doing a topper that is cooled switch it out for a water bed and have the fluid flow through the chiller. Direct contact cooling without the foam. Not sure if you can adjust the flow of the chiller but that would definitely get it nice and cold on those hot hot day. You don't try and water cool a gpu by cutting out radiator fins and adding tubing, you replace that and put a water block on it!!!
Good one. That way you could use 2 single person waterbeds to accomodate for the different zones :) 'Adjust the flow of the chiller' - I reckon with a thermostat, right? (Just measure the water temp; switch on/off when temperature is too high/low. Could be completely analog if you set it up right, I think)
If you've ever owned a waterbed you know you don't need to cool them. Jumping into a waterbed when the heating mat has failed is like sitting on a cold toilet seat in winter. Now using a waterbed as a reservoir for a PC cooling loop? Now that might have some merit.
In the future, when cutting foam, use an electric filet/carving knife. I used to build foam headliners and thats what we used. It's like cutting butter.
24:33 is a classic example of what I call the Tele-Pathetic bond. It is pathetic that two minds are sharing the same stupid or insane thought on a topic.
Linus: "Does that work, have you tried it on this foam?" Alex: "I've tried nothing, Linus." Alex just wings it & figures it out as he goes no matter the complexity of the project. Someone: "What about this solution to our problem, will that work?" Alex: "I don't know. Sure. Let's find out." Forever my favorite host at LMG. lmao
The place i worked at (a laboratory) had 2 of these thermo coolers, we used special coolant in one of them so that gunk wouldnt clog up that fabric filter. I cant remember what it was to. We had another one with water that needed an additive to not gunk up. Stays good for about half a year.
I have major concerns over anything that requires a subscription to function Also it being this pricy subscription basicly eliminates everything that isnt high income owners
also another good reason to water cool your bed is if you have a memory foam bed. when they get warm they get super squishy and basicly dont support anything anymore. but when you cool it down it supports everything perfectly.
Some basics of biology here, the reason why you can feel the cold so much but it doesn't actually appear to be cold is because your surface skin neurons aren't like thermisters but are instead like rapidly switching transistors they are either on or off and the level of coldness comes down to the rate of activation. When your body detects ultra low temperatures that usually comes from the neurons in your internal organs and mouth as your CSNs range are from 10-35 degrees. So for your body to feel chilled all you have to do is activate the cold neurons or the CSNs on your skin which just means reducing your skin temperature to slightly below 35 degrees.
