"I Weep,” more literally “Oh My Sorrows!” (Arabic: وا اسفاي) is the final collaboration between poet Isma'il Hassan and singer/composer Muhammad Wardi. In the 1950s, Isma’il Hassan was already a famed and acclaimed poet, whereas Wardi was still at the beginning of his career, singing primarily in his native Nobiin language. When the two began to collaborate, they took the world of Sudanese music by storm with songs like “Alleyla ya Samraa” (an Arabic adaptation of a Nobiin folk song), “Sudfa,” “al-Gamar Boba” (an adaptation of a Shaigiya folk song) and many, many more. But, in the early 60s, the two had a falling out, reportedly over statements Isma’il Hassan made to journalist and poet Suleyman Abd al-Jaleel that his lyrics popularized Wardi, rather than Wardi’s voice and compositions. The two then didn’t work together for decades, during which Wardi continued to compose incredibly popular songs with other poets, as Hassan continued to write incredibly popular songs for other singers. The final result of their reconciliation was this song: “I Weep,” ultimately Isma’il’s Hassan’s last song before his death in 1982. Bound with religious imagery and philosophical reflection, “I Weep” stands out among Hassan and Wardi’s usual collaborations, which tend to be romantic songs, rather than the reflective and lamentful poem we get with “I Weep.” Along with Wardi’s legendary composition and vocal performance, “I Weep” is an undeniable masterpiece of Sudanese music, and a favorite song of mine. Hope y’all enjoy!
This recording is from Wardi’s 1993 album, “Arhal,” as found on the Waves of Sudan channel.

Footnotes: 1:27 - ”Waa asafaay” most literally translates to “oh my sorrows!” and is an expression of grief, pain, or suffering, giving the image of the lamenting singer-poet who narrates this song. I chose this translation because it felt more natural for the English, less melodramatic than “oh my sorrows!” which is a much less natural phrase. 3:02 - While not the same word, the word “al-waahib” shares a root with one of the names of God in Islam, “al-Wahhaab” - the Giver of Gifts, with the reinforcing adjective “al-’attaay” (the giving). There’s no translation that doesn’t sound redundant in English, but I wanted to emphasize the superlative, so I went with this one. 4:32 - ”Dobaay,” also known as dobi, daaba, and most commonly as “dobeyt,” a Persian term meaning “two lines,” referring to a genre of poetry of four lines. Sudanese dobaay differs from the Persian genre in a couple of key ways: all lines hold to a single rhyme in Sudanese dobaay, and depending on the region, the four lines of the Persian counterpart are regularly exceeded (such as in Rufaa’a dobaay, which has a minimum of five lines). The genre is primarily associated with the pastoralist Arab groups in Darfur, Kordofan, the Butaana region, and other parts of the country, hence the allusion being coupled with the image of desert caravans. Seed Ahmad Al-Hardallu was a diplomat and famed poet of dobaay, after whom a subgenre of dobaay was named due to his immense influence and popularity. “Tajurr an-namm” literally translates to “pull the tune.” Source: www.independentarabia.com/node/237676/%D8%AB%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%81%D8%A9/%D9%81%D9%86%D9%88%D9%86/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D9%88%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%88%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%8A-%D9%8A%D8%AA%D8%B3%D9%8A%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%81%D9%86%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A5%D9%86%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%88%D9%8A%D9%82%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A8-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D8%A8%D8%B7%D9%8A 9:03 - The fall season in Sudan is divided into 7-10 ‘eeyan (singular: ‘eena, عينة/عينات), each roughly thirteen days long, based on the appearance of certain constellations, associated with various natural events in the season, i.e. during the ‘eena of an-Natra, insects begin to come out in greater numbers, or during the ‘eena of at-Tarfa - translated here as “rainy season” - the rains are especially frequent and heavy. 9:14 - More literally translated as “On the inside, I feel an ululation with the sound of a flute in it” but I rephrased it to be a bit easier to parse. It’s ultimately all metaphorical: ululations/zaghareed are a symbol of joy in Sudanese culture, and flutes sound beautiful. 12:29 - I honestly have no real idea about the intended meaning behind this, the term “yitaatu” can also be translated to “waddle” or some sort of slow movement. I chose “wade” as it’s more poetic and still continues the swan imagery. Perhaps it’s a continuation of the heaven imagery from earlier, so he’s happy cause they’re wading along in heaven? I have no clue. I kept the translation as faithful as possible, and leave it to you to interpret. 13:25 - ”Yirmah jaay” is more literally translated as “running around,” but the general idea is personification of high energy movement in happiness; hence the application of this English metaphor here. You can find the full transcription and translation of the lyrics here, as well: lyricstranslate.com/en/waa-asafaay-i-weep.html

The amount of emotion he puts into each word , he was truly a master. I’m American and he is one of my favorite singers , his music always blows my mind , there is certain singers like him that never sing words the same way twice, crafting songs like a painter paints pictures on canvas .
