Praying that your Korea trip and family reunion is a start to something new and building for you and your fam. I can relate to the whole language barrier. I’m full Native American and I’m not fluent when speaking my language. I can understand when my elders talk to me, but it’s the responding part that gets me. I kind of disconnected with my culture and Native language when I went off to college and started my business. But my dad always told me that your culture and where you come from will always be apart of you. No matter where you go in life. This video reminds me of when I went to my home town I got to see my family for the first time in 14 years, because my mother gave me for adoption when I was only a few days old. We were all overjoyed. I honestly didn’t know how to react when I saw them. Family reuniting is the best. I have I big family now and me and my brothers don’t get to see each other very often. In spite of all the awkwardness of meeting after so many years, the fact is you got everyone together, and I think deep down, each one of your family is eternally grateful for that. If they didn’t feel a wish to connect, they wouldn’t have been there at all, but they were there. Your dad probably isn’t used to expressing emotions, but I think deep down he really wants to connect with his kids, his family, and regrets not being closer with you and your sister, he’s just not comfortable expressing it. Keep trying to connect everyone, it will get easier with time, it’s emotional seeing how much you care and how much effort you put into it, and we’re proud of you for just trying. It’s very meaningful because you are actually helping to reduce everyone’s regret in life in the end. There’s nothing worse than having regrets in life, so all the awkwardness is worth it. ❤

The biggest flaw in people is their ego. Love is the most important thing between parents and children. Parents are only around for a few years longer. We must prioritize warmth and love for each other. Because in 100 years no one will know each other and no one will want to know what our ego was. Our worries become irrelevant. Therefore, as long as we live, we can respect each other, hug each other, like each other, and laugh together. Silence comes to us with death anyway. I had experienced both sides of the coin in my family. Today I am on neither side. Today I see people suffering without love, how they love in loneliness and how they defy in silence. Ahh dysfunctional family dynamics. Thank you for your vulnerability! I hope that your father and sister’s relationship improves, it broke my heart to see him push her away when she tried to give him a hug. Sometimes with that age group the pride gets in the way and they don’t realize how unreasonable they’re being. My dad and older sister had a turbulent relationship my entire life and even up until the day she suddenly passed away he would ask me how she’s doing instead of just call her, and vice versa. He lives in regret now because he should’ve let his pride go sooner and life is too short and unpredictable. I know my case is a rare case, but I hope your dad opens his heart to you guys soon! You just really never know!

As a Korean American myself, it was an interesting feeling being in Korea recently with only like 40 hours of level 1 Korean class in my brain. It was my first time being back and as a 36 year old I actually felt this sense of comfort. We did have some anxiety about speaking our level .000001 Korean, but it ended up being okay. We felt like everyone was so helpful and kind. I had heard there could still be stigma about Korean Americans who aren't "Korean" enough, but we didn't "feel" it. Everyone's experience is unique, so I'm not saying it's easy for Korean Americans in Korea, but I felt better than being asked daily in the U.S. "Where are you from?" And I say "here" and they respond "No, where are you FROMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM"

I also cannot speak my family's native language (Polish). I grew up not hearing, learning, or speaking the language, and my mother doesn't know the language. My grandmother was born in Poland and spoke Polish as her native language but she got adopted by her aunt in the USA and she moved to where I was born (Windsor, ON, Canada) less than 15 years ago (I'm almost 22) and we only reconnected in 2018 I think from not seeing each other since I was 7 because of family issues. I wish I learned my family's native language when I was a child since I cannot communicate with any of my aunts, uncles, and cousins because of the language barrier. It's also not easy learning a language when nobody around you speaks it and finding material to help you learn the language is difficult because learning material for that language is non-existent in your city.

Kai, all families have issues, with regards to your father, im not sure but for me it sounded like your dad intimidated you alot. One of the things I would suggest you try to do is relax more around him don't allow him to intimidate you, be yourself, remember your an amazing human being and anyone would be happy and proud to have you as a son. That was an awesome heartfelt vlog. I understand your language barrier. I am half japanese my mom and sister are here in the US but my moms 6 siblings and all of my cousins are spread out in Japan. I do not speak Japanese have tried many times to learn but didn't appreciate my culture until i was older. I try to visit every few years. I love it in Japan and love all of my family. My mom translates. I hope you and your family keep trying to work on your relationship. It's hard to carry a conversation with someone that you don't see day to day. How did you come to the US and stay here?

When my relatives and my parents friends as about my brothers whereabouts, all I tell them is “ he was once in Thailand, but now I don’t know where he is.” My mom who doesn’t associate with him tells me to lie…. Why do I need to lie??? It’s hard when they ask me about him…. I even told my mom I wanted to go visit him in Korea. Her answer was, “ that boy, why do you need to see him?” There’s no reason for me to see him ever…. 😮😮I’m glad you reconnected with your family.
