This time the girlfriend was not happy about my new challenge and to be honest, neither was I. Going homeless for 72 hours was no piece of cake. Watch here to find out how I survived without shelter for 72 hours (3 days).

I want to point out that the purpose of this 'challenge' was to bring the attention to the issue of homelessness and not make fun of it. If you have watched our videos in the past, you will recognize that the tone of the video is far less comedic than usual. And to those sending me hateful emails by just seeing the title, please watch the video first.

Many Homeless give their things away because they are depressed and are constantly contemplating suicide.. it's a very lonely sad life so yeah when a man or woman tries to give you their brand new boots or coat or backpack someone just bought them. Seek some authority figure out for them because they need help. Honestly Nobody on the streets gives brand new things away unless they are either depressed or dying of cancer

When I was homeless I used my grandmothers address on the application to get a job (not enough to pay rent) but I could afford to keep my $10 planet fitness membership. I slept in the locker rooms dressing room unbothered. Ate whatever I could get my hands on while saving the money from my job to get a car. After I got my car I could get a better job in the next town over to pay for an apartment. That’s the story of how I beat homelessness. I’m 19 btw

I was in the same place in August. I'm also 19. I was down for about a month and a half. I got a job at a restaurant as an assistant manager and bought myself food from that. I had a backpack full of clothes, water and a toothbrush. I slept outside of restaurants when they were closed and left before the opening crew so no one would notice me. Either that or I'd sleep in a shed in the back of the store I worked at. I eventually found someone with a spare bedroom that I could rent out and here I am.

I am homeless and have been for way to long however I really appreciate the making of this video for so many reasons that I cannot express all of my thoughts. We are not diseased and I say that because like he explained he was looked at in a different way which is at least I believe the worst part of being homeless. Secondly getting anything from food, money, toiletries, (someone just gave me a zero degree sleeping bag recently), to clean socks- this one is huge, and even just a smile. A smile or a wave hello goes along way when your treated like your below low if that is even a thing. There is just one thing that this video could not illustrate and that is when you first actually become homeless. There are so many thoughts sprinting like Usain Bolt through your mind its overwhelming. How did I get here? What am I going to do? I am scared! How am I going to survive, I don't know anything! Am I going to be OK? Where am I going to sleep? I give him credit for even trying but to go out and know that in 3 days it's going to go back to normal again and that it is going to be over is so much different than it actually is being a reality. Sorry for the long comment, I could write a book on this topic (maybe I should). Its really hard being homeless so if you could next time you see someone down and out just appreciate what you have and what we don't! Thank you. -D.G-

@stixfreakazoid8462

I had been homeless for 22 years trying figure out what "home" was. I was literally homeless for 3 1/2 years. Not every city has shelters and it isnt easy. But to add on top of it you get stares, brutal fights, and deaths. I had to fight off wildlife and hide my camp as in my town the cops will destroy entire camps just for being a blemish to the city. And because you are homeless you cant recover that last photo of your family that keeps you concentrated on surviving. You dont have service on your phone. People dont always help. And it was the hardest time cuz in a camp you cant be too picky about the company of your camp. Mostly because you dont kno the habits or dislikes of any given person. I had to help my camp by providing something. I couldn't just stay in my tent and hide. I had to use my knowledge of berries, climb trees for eggs, and my axe that i had found in the woods in an old abandoned shack 10 miles away. Its not a joke. And had the guy from this video been noticed he very well could have been killed, hurt, or robbed just for doing a video about being homeless

I've been homeless in a few different ways (urban, tent in the woods, and now mobile living in a converted truck thank goodness) and I really appreciate this episode and the integrity of the way this challenge was done. I love how you guys leverage your platform to spread empathetic and realistic messages like this. The end is especially admirable; I completely agree that the majority of people on the street are compassionate. Something I've said since I was an urban street kid is that "98% of people were always warning me about how bad 98% of people are". I'm really grateful you guys are giving that kind of humanizing insight to your audience. You're really helping to positively influence a new generation to be more aware and have more perspective on lives less privileged than their own. Great work, thank you.

I guess the danger part depends on where you are. I was living in my truck for a little while. The worst part of the day was night time, finding a spot where I could park and not be harassed. Most of the other homeless people I met were incredibly helpful, sharing knowledge and whatever they had with me. There were regular people who were unbelievably kind. I went to cash in some returnable bottles one day. One woman left her ticket in the machine for me. Another man gave me a shopping cart full of bottles. And then he gave me $10. I was almost $30 ahead even before I cashed in my own cans and bottles. I also found out that only about half of the people I met and talked to (not very hard as homeless people are very willing to tell their story if you are willing to listen) were addicted to drugs or alcohol. People had lost their housing for all sorts of reasons. Foreclosure, medical reasons, bad relationships, mental illness, etc. With the cost of housing becoming a major problem, there will be more and more people living on the streets and no one should judge. I met several people who did have jobs. They simply didn't make enough to afford housing.

I haven't been homeless. But, I was paying around $700 a month in credit card debt. With rent, food, car payments, and other expenses it all adds up. I've gone to food shelf/banks, and volunteered there in the past. I've gotten WIC and welfare when I didn't work for a long period of time, too.

This struck a chord with me. My mother, brother, and myself were always on the move because my biological father got involved with the wrong people. The closest i've been to homeless was living in my moms car when we were pretty young and eating timed out mcdonalds food, bless my moms boss she let that slide as an employee to feed her kids. Since escaping that situation, we've always been in the really low income bracket and i've done things i'm not particularly proud of to make rent and get food. I'm thankful that i've been able to hold down a flat with my family before and now with roomates as i'm trying to go to college so that I may support myself better with future employment. The thing I really empathized with is how he was being stared at and judged based on his presentation. I frequently get the same treatment but for the reason that i'm blind and walk with a white cane. My friends always let me know when i'm being given the stink eye. somehow both that people assume that i'm getting special privilages and treatment just standing in line like everybody else, and also like i'm just broken, a walking freakshow or something to that effect. I aggree with and promote sentiments made at the end and that is that beyond a persons appearence, there is a human being that is just trying to exist and survive and a small act of kindness goes such a long way even something as small as treating someone with respect and kindness. I'm incredibly thankful for kindness and generocity shown to me by total strangers, and even though I don't have means, I try to give back with my time to help others. This isn't a contest, i'm well aware of those who have it much worse than I, but I thought I would share my perspective. Have a great day or night and stay safe.

as someone who has gone from being fairly well off to literally homeless and completely broke its nice to see people take the time to think about stuff like this and even try it, even if it is for just 3 days. try it for a year or more and see how people treat you, its pretty sad how people wont help a starving man out with a meal or even their pocket change. *Edit: Also you should try this in Chicago in the winter, makes this look like a cake walk. also most people wont give you money because they assume your going to spend it on drugs so when you do get lucky enough that someone helps you out it’s usually just a sandwich or bottle of water (which is insanely helpful, but would be nice to collect enough money to get a motel for a night every once and awhile) A nice tip for the homeless: its hard to keep a phone paid when most employers wont give homeless people jobs, but if you have a disconnected phone you can use mcdonalds free wifi ;) luckily for me Im no longer homeless thanks to a friend who is letting me stay with him rent free, once step at a time, hopefully i can find a job and start working again soon.

15 years ago I ran away to Winnipeg, i ended up homeless all winter (5ish months). I quickly figured out which bus shelters are heated, anywhere downtown open 24/7, wore multiple layers of clothes at all times to keep from freezing, how to quickly wash in public bathroom sink, couch hopping as often as possible was very important, getting into a shelter early enough in the day before they fill up for the night too. Most of the other homeless people I met in the shelters tried to take care of me and protect me cause of how young I was, and some had daughters around my age too..
@awakenow7147
@awakenow7147 5 лет назад
5 months?! Thats a long time man. I've had a few of your experiences. I was only homeless for roughly a month on-and-off(couch-hopping lightened the load). To be honest, I was way too scared to sleep around other homeless people...or even interact with them at all. People have been known to get killed by them where I live. My area was warm...and has a lot of canyons. So at night, I would trek to those canyons and scout the entire area out before I could even get a wink of sleep. I trusted nature more than people on the streets. Thankfully, the canyons were easy on me for the most part.

I've been living homeless on and off just because of times I've lost a job. Unsurprisingly, most of the time it was for domestic reasons rather than a landlord chasing me off a property. But I still couldn't have paid rent, being a young 17 year old 2 weeks before their birthday with very little knowledge on how the world works, I couldn't get a job without help. Especially with the thought that I could just put some random address on it. My so called "friend" who was notorious for treating me like garbage, taught me where to get food and how to apoly for food stamps and such. He eventually got me a job, but not without insulting me and basically grinding my self esteem into the pavement. That's just the beginning to all of it too, I didn't even mention that my violent father was the one who kicked me out. I've been attempting to get on my feet by holding jobs, and through government assistance, but it's a *lot* harder than you think. Especially when dealing with some of the symptoms of PTSD from being chronically homeless. I hope one day I'll get into a class to finish my GED, if I don't have a job I'm constantly looking for one and working under the table for friends if I have to. Maybe one day I'll get a grant or some kind of scholarships to attend college, but I'd love to become an entrepreneur in connecting people to the power grid using solar energy, I know how to build solar panels almost from scratch. (Raw parts) I'm a smart kid, who just had really lazy and morally broken parents. I learned all that I could on the streets, and I'm doing my best, but I could certainly use some help.

Unless you’re truly homeless, you’ll never understand how it feels. You had a home to go to at the end of your challenge, that changes everything and it’s not authentic. Until you feel that black hole of hopelessness when you’re down that far in life, you’ll never get it.

About six or seven years ago I was living in New York City. I was a teenager at the time and was walking home. When I came across this older homeless man who was on the ground. He didn't have any weapons and had fallen down, he had crutches and was having a hard time standing back up. I helped him up, and walked him to a space that was safer. He was so grateful and thankful, I still think about it all these years later. It doesn't take much to be kind

My husband, myself and our two sons (they wore theirs off and on) wore trump hats during our road trip from NH to FL & back. Over a two week period and many cities along the east coast, not one single person started anything. We had nothing but compliments given to us. I was shocked.

@@kansas8152 Probably because you're in Orange County, where actual Republicans are. Just don't go to Compton or Skid Row. They hate Trump & are obviously gang infested.

I was homeless for 40 days. Quite an experience. I had a couple months beforehand to try to prevent it or to prepare for it. I tried hard to prevent it but glad I prepared for it.

Much like your experiment I went from being a college student with a full time job working on tech and within a few unfortunate months ended up homeless for a year. Part of that spent surviving deep in the Oregon forest. I have to say much of my observation was the same and we even used some similar tactics. The hard part of getting out of it was someone giving you the chance. I met a lot of people trying to help eachother that could barely help themselves & ended up banding together for a time. The one lesson I learned that wasn't covered is that there is a clear division that are some homeless that are lifers and without a lot of help will most likely they will stay homeless. Others do have the skills and the aptitude to get themselves out of it eventually and most likely will given the chance. Its hard out there and after the business I built failed I was homeless again & it had become my biggest fear. Luckily things are more stable now but its amazing how fast things can happen where you find yourself on the street and being treated as less than human. And going from a well liked business owner that did lots of community outreach to being shunned by society. I have to say I did pride myself on never stealing. I also always kept a nice pair of clothes for interviews which definitely helped.

I really appreciate that you did this experiment. Really enjoyed your out look now you have had a taste of what it's like. The first time I was truly homeless it was because my bank wouldn't wire money I planned to use coming back from vacation in California. I walked all the way to Wyoming with no cash just a kid right out of highschool. It took me 6 months. Without showering or sleeping in doors. Rain blizzards cold danger starving. Ever since than I end up back on the streets all the time. I can never walk past a homeless person without treating them like a human being. My best advice for helping homeless people is just talking to them. Even if you don't give them anything just a smile or hello can make their day. So I respect you did this never judge anyone If you haven't been in there shoes
