Red beryl, also called red emerald, is one of the rarest minerals on Earth, found in only three locations. This is one of them. In this video, I venture to Utah's Topaz Mountain and meet up with Eric Poulin (@Seekinglost) for a lesson about gem hunting.

In this video, I mistakenly referred to the little pockets containing mineral deposits as a "bug", when they are actually called a vug. Thanks to @Whocarzz40 for correcting me, I appreciate it!

Awesome place, it looks interesting and fun to look for minerals. I would love to visit that place someday, great mini arch too and views. Great finds!

It was a really cool place to explore. I haven't done much rock hounding before but I think I'm hooked! I would definitely recommend checking this place out. There is a lot of great camping and hiking in the area too. I went on a couple of rock hounding trips with Eric this spring and I'll have another video of our adventures in Gold Hill coming soon. Thanks for watching, Nicole! ~ Mike

This was my first rock hounding trip and it was really fun. The caldera is a really interesting geologic formation and is a great place to hike too.

Great video, Mike! That was a fun adventure. I went back in the fall and found a more productive topaz location that produced some higher quality crystals. I can take you to that spot next time if you'd like. It's also "Doug friendly"!

Nice video... not always easy holding the camera in one hand and climbing with the other... Good rocks there...

If you want a chance to maybe find a new mineral or gem, try the place where the world's rarest gemstone is found. The Golden Horn batholith, just north of Hwy 20 in the Washington Cascades... I think one of the new ones is called Zectzurite...or something close in spelling... This unique granite upheaval has a unique mixture of minerals, which makes the possibility of finding something new a good possibility...😊

That sounds really interesting. I'd never heard of Zektzerite before. I'm new to the rock hounding, so there are quite a few minerals that I have yet to learn about. I'm going to run this one past Eric. It sounds like a fun rock hounding adventure. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching! ~ Mike

I think Eric said "vug" not "bug". A vug is a pocket in the rock.

Thanks. Yes, he did. I'm new to rock hounding so I'm still learning some of the terms and I obviously wasn't listening closely when I was editing this video. I put a pinned comment at the top of the thread noting my mistake. Thanks for watching, Pete! ~ Mike

My thoughts are that if getting there was easy there would not be anything to find as many would hunt and take.

This is a pretty well known area for rock hounding and has a paved road that goes past Topaz mountain providing easy access (hiking up is a different story tho...). There is a whole caldera full of rhyolite deposits and a lot of places to dig for topaz. Red Beryl is very rare and this is one of the only places in the world that is open to the public. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike

Have you ever found turquoise in you exploring?
@AbouttheJourney
@AbouttheJourney 9 дней назад
I haven't. I'm pretty new to rockhounding and have only been a few times, but I'd love to find some. It's not to common in Utah, where I'm at. Arizona and Nevada seem to be the best places to find it. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike

It's a vug not a bug

Well, I stand corrected. When I was editing, I thought he was saying bug. I'll leave a note at the top of the comment section.Thanks for setting me straight and thanks for watching! ~ Mike

You get to just keep the ones you find in those mines? Is that private or government land?
@AbouttheJourney
@AbouttheJourney 8 месяцев назад
Yes. This area is on BLM land and is open to the public for rock hounding, however, there is a private, you dig business that operates on a mining claim, called Topaz Mountain Adventures. They're located by the camp sites and charge to dig for topaz (not much red beryl in that area). The claim is in a younger part of the caldera and produces much larger and nicer pieces of topaz. They set off charges and pile up the material and paying customers can hunt for specimens. They even let people come and watch (from a safe distance, of course) the demolition too. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike

It was a lot of fun and a nice place to camp. I got to chat with Rhonda for a bit. It sounds like they find a lot of really nice pieces in that part of the caldera. I might have to try it out next time I'm in the area. Thanks for watching. ~ Mike

Too bad red beryl doesn't fluoresce like some minerals do. You can have the topaz irradiated to turn a brilliant blue. Problem is is that your not allowed to have the equipment to do it. If you know where a food processor who uses Cobalt 60 to sterilize foods like MREs you might be able to get your gems irradiated.
@AbouttheJourney
@AbouttheJourney 6 месяцев назад
Interesting. I didn't know that irradiated topaz turns a brilliant blue. Yeah, but I guess that you can't just pick up a box of Cobalt 60 from Home Depot Lol. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
