when you said ‘as a 19 year old in 2023,’ i had to pause the video to process the fact that you’re only a year older than me. your videos are great - you speak clearly and coherently, getting your point across concisely, and what you have to say is really interesting. more power to you for getting through this janky game, and i hope you keep making videos (especially about the strange men anthology, your video’s got me playing the crooked man and it’s an awesome game i wouldn’t have found without your video, so thank you)

I got this game back in 1994 for the 3DO. (Yes, I was one of the twelve people who bought one. The Goldstar model too, not the Panasonic.) I loved the premise for the game and it started a lifelong love of horror games. I did eventually finish it but I rage quit countless times before doing so. I remember thinking I'll play as Carnby first then Hartwood on the second go around. There was no second playthrough. Great video Ben!

The reason you were probably having a hard time "sprinting" was because you are most likely using a modern keyboard. During the DOS era, keyboards naturally had what was called a "half press" state. Meaning that the keys could be lightly pressed for certain functions, or really hard pressed "full press" for another. Usually only the arrow keys had this function, but there were many keyboards that had all the keys with this function. It was because for typing, you could only use the arrow keys to move your position when typing (aka no mouse). So a "half press" moved you one position at a time slowly, and a "full press" moved your position either really fast or to the end of the column/row. Modern keyboards don't typically have this function anymore and are usually an off/on thing. Or, if the function is in the keyboard, you have to long press the key to activate a "full press." You can get modern keyboards that have that old functionality, but they are more expensive, generally considering "loud" for the clacking noise, but they are very customizable. I agree that a lot of the older games (especially DOS) were needlessly hard and/or had really clunky mechanics. However, modern games are stupidly easy in comparison and in order to make a game "harder" they generally just make all the enemies into bullet sponges while also limiting your ammo. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of modern games and there are some older games that I would legitimately NEVER play again because of how stupidly hard they are. However, I feel like the older games had an excuse that everything was experimental (ESPECIALLY control mapping) with no set rules. And sometimes the no set rules created some really unique games with interesting gameplay mechanics that have been used a lot to standardize modern games. I wish that more modern games were a bit more experimental without every game journalist needlessly critiquing it unfairly for trying something new. For instance, people heavily critiqued the fact that Skyward Sword had a stamina wheel that was new to the Zelda series. Honestly, I think that the addition was great and inventive to make Link feel more like a real person that could get tired and it made the game interesting so that you had to be more tactful in how you fought/did puzzles. However, several years later BOTW comes out and they didn't really critique the stamina wheel half as much (though there were a fair bit who still hate it) because it added more depth to Link's fighting ability. The also improved the function by allowing players to upgrade how much stamina that they could work with. It's this kind of experimental gameplay mechanics that make games more interesting. It's just too bad that the game journalist's really focused on hating the fact that weapons had a durability that would make them break (which technically isn't a new mechanic in rpgs, but is in hack & slash games). But that has even evolved in the new Tears of the Kingdom if you look at the Nintendo directs that show gameplay of Link being able to modify weapon durability.
@J-B4R
@J-B4R Год назад
I only want to mention, Shadow of the Colossus had the upgradeable stamina wheel years ago. LoZ is still a lovely series, and its evolution is great.
@WildKat25
@WildKat25 Год назад
@@J-B4R I only found out about the upgradable stamina wheel in SotC five years after I had played the game the first time around, lol. I was complaining to a friend about the final boss being really hard on the stamina circle, and he was like, "Didn't you get all the geckos?" Meanwhile, I'm like,"WTF are you talking about?" In the remake, I collected all the geckos.

It's double-tap to sprint... but it requires a VERY precise double-tap timing, probably because Infogrames didn't want to accidentally activate it when people were trying to inch forward. I'm not sure if that game actually supported half-press states, did old french keyboards have them? (Infogrames is french, IIRC, so they'd have tested on I think AZERTY keyboards, if I remember *that* right, too)

@WildKat25
@WildKat25 10 месяцев назад
@@mightygalhupo8947 There aren't really printed articles (that have been made digital) about something that was at one point standard for keyboards in the 70s & 80s. That's like trying to look up a printed article (that isn't an instruction manual) about how to do DOS commands.

I do not comment, but I couldn't help myself from applauding 1) your dedication to finishing these games you choose to play, and 2) your editing and narration quality. As I have noticed, you choose a somewhat unique angle of narration, and not only explain the game (if you can), but also tell it in a story-like fashion (most notable in your video on "The Crooked Man") with nice humor. One of the lines in particular (2:42: "Open a door? Buh-bye~") had me genuinely laughing. I will certainly continue to watch your future videos, and wholly intend on sticking around for some time. Man, the fact you're 19 and trying out oldschool games like this is pretty awesome. Learning about where we came from game wise and how things developed is actually really important! By playing this, you now know just how much work has gone into making modern games more accessible/fun to interact with. I find Alone in the Dark Charming but... yeaaah it ain't a 'Good Game' in terms of actually trying to play it. It's a pity so many really good/interesting/important horror games are so inaccessible for people to play due to not easily having access to them (without throwing up the cross bones). Rule of Rose, Illbleed, the original iterations of the Silent Hill Games, Haunted Grounds...

yeah, the fun part of playing old games is seeing stuff and going "man, why haven't we done stuff like that again!" but the down side is you'll also go "yep, its good we didn't do stuff like that again." example, just beat silent hill 2 for the first time. I love how pyramid head shows up there's nothing fancy about it, he just shows up with a sword or spear and beats the snot out of you. really takes you more by surprise when you don't hear his stomping or some themesong when he shows up like most modern big bad enemys. that being said, boy, the fact that I can't pick up anything in very visible and not that dimly lit area because my flashlight is off is stupid.

For some people it takes them ages to find a good video style for themselves, but you instantly give off the vibe of both sure in what you're doing, and having been here for a while when your channel was made exactly a month ago, especially to the point where I feel like I missed something. I've been binging your videos and I was surprised when you said you were only 19! I thought you were older (in a good way) so it caught me off guard 😅 Congrats on making your way through this game! I grew up with the N64 so I'm kind of used to old games but I'd probably become frustrated and quit.

Fun fact about that bow and arrow: Throwing the arrow like any other object is just as effective. It flies just as straight down the entire hallway. We can't have things make sense now, can we?

Thank you for this video. I do appreciate seeing younger adults taking a pretty fair look at some older games, especially as getting them to look & sound their best, even with GOG, can be a chore before you even begin. It sometimes takes dedication & enthusiasm just to get things running the way it authentically "used to" or at all. Often, even though they're classics it can be *hard* to recommend them, especially blind. I get that the craft has come a long way but stuff like the amount of cruel soft locks can be fairly unforgivable even by 1990s standards. They relied too much on the saving grace of once you know what to do the games are only like an hour long. I also noticed, it really was the wild west with UI elements & controls. Seeing your problems with both really made me consider how much the culture just kind of wordlessly coalesced around some design & control elements that I'd grown to take for granted & how when they're missing it feels off. If you ever consider the sequels, to get a feel for the tone, I'm reminded of artwork made for a 2009 Let's Play, where the first game is portrayed by a stressed out Emily Hartwood creeping through a poorly lit mansion corridor with a unsteady but bloody saber while monstrous hands creep out of the dark from around the corner- But where the second game is portrayed by a drunk out of his mind, crazed & manic Edward Carnby screaming while downing a liquor bottle wearing a fur lined Santa Claus outfit while jump kicking a pirate ship's chief cook in the jaw.

Nice review! It reminded me of the the time when I was about 9 or 10 and my dad got me Alone In The Dark 4 for my PS2. I went into the first house, I talked to the npc then left the house and got jumpscared by him beeing killed by wolfs. I turned off the game at the speed of light and never touched It again, I even ended up having nightmares for a month. The good old times. Edit: After commenting, I thought to myself why not check out what scared me so much when I was younger. I did and yet again I got Jumpscared!
