Imagine telling the guy who said "SCV good to go sir" that 25 years later his voice lines would be played at a concert in Korea that played only the music to this computer game they were making.... Insane
As someone mentioned already the SCV voice in both SC and SC2 is Glenn Stafford and he is still composing music for Blizzard to this day! So I think he knows :)
In chat we were all ripping on him for not knowing the term "rhythm guitarist", now seeing the video and that it's a completely different instrument makes it even better lol
So the conductor does very little at the concert (keeping the tempo, giving cues to the players when to come in and other small instructions) but that's because they did the majority of the work beforehand. At the practice sessions they get to decide who should play loud and what the tempos should be how to articulate the notes and many many more things. So with a capable orchestra at the concert you hear the conductor's vision of the music. And it accounts for a lot just because the sheet music is the same, different conductors can have different interpretations. This is why she got the praise.
Well. Sound actually travels slowly. If you sit very far away, you can't wait for the sound to get to you. It will be too slow and you will be out of sync. The conductor is there so that everybody is in sync, as light travels much faster so everybody will be in sync. Also, the instruments face the other way, so you can't hear everything in front as well. Not an issue for small bands or ensembles. Can be an issue for larger ensembles if you sit at the back. And also everything you say, obviously.
@@mapleveritas2698 Your first point about sound being slower than light does not apply when the orchestra is sitting in the same area. The differences in delay between sound reception and light reception inside the same concert hall would not make enough of a difference for your brain. Your second point about instruments all facing toward the audience makes more sense, but the main reason is that the conductor can hear everything in the direction of the audience and make adjustments/guide tempo/etc as was mentioned by someone else.
As someone who was in a choir for several years, my experience is that a conductor does a lot more than "very little at the concert". They are the glue that keeps everything together in every performance. The difference between a good conductor and a bad conductor is tremendous for a performer. It's like saying "A manager does very little" or "The President does very little."
Think of it this way, individual musicians are like dragoons and will path everywhere. You might start with 12 dragoons being ordered to move in the right direction but some of them might wander off or many of them will trickle in, arriving late instead of arriving at the same time. The conductor is microing all of the units in the orchestra so they are coordinated and form an efficient concave so they have the best possible surface area and DPS.
“Slightly bigger violin” 😂…Wow you were not lying when you said you know nothing about music. BTW, the “backup guitarist” is a bass player. It’s a good thing you know a ton about StarCraft, Artosis…but I still enjoyed this a ton. Makes me want to go back and play the campaign again just to hear that music.
As someone who did band from 5th to 12th grade after you've learned a piece of music generally you don't need a conductor but they help keep everyone in sync. You keep them in your side vision and and tap your foot in time, some people do this very aggressively and you can see it. After I learned what the conductor wanted I really never looked at all the other gesturing. Playing music is a lot like driving a car the sheets are the road and the conductor and other stuff is the signage, so if your a good driver your always glancing and listing to every thing going on.
Also, in my orchestra, they were the ones doing all the teaching the music and "remixing" it for the orchestra - I don't know the correct word, they choose the nuances, tell different groups of instruments when to go in or how to rehearse. Their job is much more difficult when learning the music, and during the concert, they basically reap the fruit of all this hard work. (Actually, it's kind of the same for the musicians, the concert is our reward for spending all these months rehearsing together, it's all automatic on concert day, because we've done all the work in the preceding months.)
14:30 About that, actually one of the greatest violinists in the world, Augustin Hadelich, is a self-confessed StarCraft player, though I don't know what race he plays. Even if you're not a violinist, look him up and be blown away.
oh man im such a sucker for this kind of stuff since i've played classical music for as long as i've played games, i got a little teary eyed watching this. Thanks for showing us the footage from the orchestra!
How necessary a conductor is *completely* depends on the music. Almost all large modern orchestral music (written in the past ~130 years) needs a conductor to perform at a professional level. The conductor does much more than just keep everyone in sync. The conductor is the singular director for how the music is interpreted. Even though everyone has their own sheet music, 80 musicians on their own will give you 80 different variations of musical phrasing and interpretations. The conductor is the singular musical director shaping the music in real time. On a more fundamental level, in larger orchestras, someone on one side of the orchestra cannot play in time with someone on the other side because they either can't hear them, or literally the speed of sound is delayed enough that you are playing out of time if you only use your ears. Thus, you need to rely on the central visual of the conductor. Some music, like this Starcraft music, is much easier to play without a conductor because there is a drumset playing throughout most of the music (which is basically an audio conductor), which everyone can sync to. But most orchestral music doesn't have a central instrument keeping constant time. Source: Studied in musical conservatory and performed in orchestras after college for many years.
re: what does the conductor do? You're in good company, that question gets asked a lot. You can think of a conductor as being like the director of a film. During all the rehearsals, they're constantly saying "No no no, not like that, you need to ____. You there, play line 37, but start soft and ease into it and build to a plateau in the middle, like this [gestures]... ... Good, but try again and come in a little earlier... Ok good. Everyone, again from ____." So what you see by the time you're watching the finished product, all the conductor is doing is given the group little semi-conscious reminders of all the little things that they've been over and over and over. The difference that a good conductor makes is like the difference that a good film director makes. The conductor is the one creating the interpretation of the script / drama. When you're in a group that has a really good one, you can feel it in a big way, because the vision is gripping. They really bring it alive.
Artosis bro, can you sit back and realize just how amazing your life is? You moved to South Korea for a dream job casting for GSL, spend all day talking about the game you love and being paid while living in one of the best cities in the world, bringing up 3 kids, always feeling clever cos you sit next to Tasteless.... I mean, you won the lottery man. Well played!
I can't believe Dan's daughter is 10... It really seems like a few years ago when he first mentioned she was born. I'm getting sick of time passing lol.
This is awesome. I like to play terran soundtrack while I work on acrylic paintings in the shop.... Glad you could see it performed by an orchestra. Love the stream! Keep not saying nice things!
The conductor is kinda like the music producer, she is at the spot where she can hear everyone play, and can tell if a part is being played loud enough. Kinda like mid-set coaching
I am sure there are games that kids play these days that give them the same feeling I had at 15 when I first played SC. There is great beasty in a well designed game. The nostalgia of this music is palpable.
Musicians do read their music sheets but at times look up at the conductor for visual cues so they know when to come in and cut off if there's a pause in the song or at the end
the conductor is literally just the director, think of it like the director of a film who does none of the acting but is ultimately responsible for the entire performance
The conductor is to the orchestra as the Player is to StarCraft The conductor auditions the musicians (picks composition), arranges the material they perform(chooses where to attack) etc. Cheering for the violinists and floutists would be like if people cheered for the drones and roaches when Dark bopped someone.
Finland HERE (STARGAZER) - SCII (Silver Ranked). They have done this Blizzard Gaming Starcraft II "Concert" like 10 years now. Somehow this is in my opinion supposed to market "Asian (korean, Chinsese)" classical music (TwoSet Violin). Like they do this every 2 years. FIN YEAR 2022 -

"where are the terran players?" .. 8-10 people raise their hands. "Where are the protoss players?" Essentially everyone else there raises their hands.... Perhaps this is evidence protoss players (like me) are not apes, but instead are cultured and high brow individuals with much to offer society. Apes are unlikely to go to the theater to watch an orchestra. What a classy group of people.
I am a classical composer and love watching StarCraft! But it's true, classical musicians don't play computer games too much. I don't make just classical music, but also some electronic music as well, and play the electric bass (also known as back-up guitar) too.
