I went to Burning Man completely alone all the way from Australia, it was a challenging experience but one that I would totally do again! check out what I got up to :) Insta - scotty_knowss
It's awesome that so many of you are enjoying this video and i'm so glad that it has helped inspire people to do things on their own :) I have some video projects coming soon so make sure you subscribe! cheers for all the love!
I find that there's something really honorable in being OK with doing things solo. Especially now when everyone seems to want validation through others, with social media, lots of people can't do it I bet
Evan Lasrich yeah that’s why he filmed it the whole time to post it to you tube. He did it for the publicity of doing it alone so your statement makes no fucking sense. The only thing anyone cares about is how they’re viewed online.
This was a great experience video! Way better than all those videos that use drones and only film pretty people. This was authentic. The comical tragedies were spot on. Great stuff!
Remember me? I was in your camping ⛺️ area. I walked into the camp & I said...as a joke ‘Come with me if you wanna buy drugs’ & you sprung up from your seat 💺 like someone had injected you with adrenaline 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 best memory!
I have been 2 years now...While I bet it would cost a bit more to bring with you, I HIGHLY recommend a Kodiak tent to at least give you some shelter from the dust. As far as going solo goes, I almost did that last year but, fortunately, was invited by the lead of a local camp, I had no knowledge of, to join them. I am really happy I took him up on the invite. I have become very good friends with several of my camp mates and plan to continue camping with them in the future. With them being local, it makes me feel better about being a part of this group since I can help out before, during and after the burn. Also, I quit drinking over 2 years ago and am glad I can enjoy Burning Man so much with out my mind being altered. I remember EVERYTHING...lol
Could you imagine driving at night , and coming over the mountains in the desert , and seeing all those lights , fire and all the partying and activity . You might think you entered the twilight zone. Farout.
I rode in with some friends doing an installation but other than that I was solo the entire burn (except for the time I spent with all of the awesome new friends I made which was every waking moment besides what little sleep I did get). Met some amazing people and several new friends I'll have for life. Into the dust & to the wolves. Best way to experience anything, especially a soul journey like the burn
I was in the teddy bears room! Also saw the Two Giraffes performance as well. This video made me miss Burning Man so much. Thanks for capturing and sharing your journey for us!
Dude, this is an AWESOME video! Was having a little FOMO for not being there this year and your little jewel of a video made me almost feel like I made it out to the 2018 Burn! Thanks much!
Good for you! I wasn't alone when I went for my first time in 2017, but I did do most of my exploration alone, and it was a fabulous experience. We enjoyed watching your video and congratulate you on your solo adventure! Next time, look us up. We'll be there....
Hey Scotty, awesome video, really describes someones experiences for their 1st Burning Man. Was nice meeting you last year, was my 1st also. I was one of the Hoverlandians hanging out under the shade. I can even see my tent in the first few minutes.
Went solo in 2017 after my friend bailed. I too found it hard. you meet so many cool people but then you never see them again because it's so huge and there's so much going on. When I go back I'll be joining a real camp. I think that'll improve the experience quite a bit.
Yeah, either go with an experienced person, or read all you can on being prepared. Haven't gone yet, myself, but still hope to some day. Best from Indiana!
First time I went alone too. Thanks to online communities I was able to learn a lot in the two weeks I had to prepare. I was only coming from LA, so about 600 mile drive pretty convenient really. I used the "Burner Virgins" group on facebook to find a camp (which I thought you had to have, I didn't realize that it was mostly just open camping XD) though that turned out to be fun having a 'home base.' My neighbours ended up becoming great friends and I camp with them now; I went to two of their wedding a couple months ago. I also drove somebody up there who needed a ride; I met her by posting on the burner rideshare page that I had extra space in my car. So it wasn't 100% alone in that regard, but I consider it alone since I walked into the room knowing nobody and made friends once inside. My tip: just cover food, water, shelter, and clothing for the week; everything else is a bonus. You can find ways to get involved ahead of time or when you get there. Everyone is really open to offering and accepting help since there aren't any hidden/transactional motives. And stay away from the main "Burning Man" facebook group - sometimes you find good humour, but it's mostly a bunch of trash-talking and arguing like the rest of the Internet. Very NOT-burner attitudes and vibes in there. You may find local burner groups that meet at bars or somewhere (not right now obv, but when things are more normal again). It'll be the best thing you do for yourself!
Dude this is fkn awesome !! Solo aussie traveler myself, spent the whole of last year living in europe on my own (but never alone). Cant wait to do Burning Man next
18:56 Can you see one guy walking through the fire? everyone yell "get out!" and we can see one guys shadow of leg crossing fire field from the right side to left to center of fire field. that's me. :)
I could never in a million years go to the burning man festival. "Burners" are definitely cut from a different cloth. The art is amazing but everything else looks like absolute hell to me.
Best Burning Man video ever - great to see it from a fellow Aussie’s point of view! I travelled around the USA on my own for 6 1/2 weeks but didn’t do Burning Man lol 😂
Absolutely loved it. I am 100% going next year due to your vlog. You sir are a dude, if you go again in 2019 it would be an honour to hang out with you!!!
I did that in 2016 and it turned out awesome! If you go into a free-camping area you'll generally form a camp pretty quickly. It's probably nearly impossible to bring other people if you're traveling that far.
HI Scotty, Way to go. I had my first burn also and travelled over alone from Australia. Sure was an eye opener. SO much to see and do and so much I didnt see. Missed out on getting naked and washed down but did walk in to a bar at the right time offering Absinth and got excited when I spun the wheel and got the bar tenders special, but to my shocked surprise it was no drink - As I got spanked and slapped from both ends - I think I needed that - I was then ready for burning man. Actually probably still not prepared till we finally were at one with the dust way out as far as we could ride as the temple burned. It was a beautiful moment with great friends. We finally got lost - pretty damn funny. I was then a dark wad all the way home on a Yellow or should I say green bike with no lights (as mine disappeared, but all part of the fun) it made strange sounds with every peddle, but we eventually found our way back to camp to change it up to discover what else we could find in the night/morning ahead. What an ADVENTURE!!!! Till next time )"(
Omg I was there 14 days and you saw more than me. Awesome video thank you for showing people the real burning man. Not a bunch of wannabee models in clean clothes. You never see that and this proves it. Please when they say dusty they mean it. Enclosed tent next time. Thanks again. Venice burn this weekend. Whoohoo!
Your poor tent!!! My first burn was about 18 years ago and we had alot of similar experiences. That blackout being one of them. Live and learn definately a theme on the playa. Will you return and what will you improve?
i just discovered this festival and part of me wants to go to experience this for the first time and vlog it but the other part says be careful! So many things to get checked when it comes to safety! It must be one of a kind experience.
Thanks, I love it. Having a major case of playa blues here, you camped about 4 tents away of me from what I see. It was my first year as wel and I like to see the different experiences at bm Thanks I needed this
I'm the same way. Every night after I fall asleep I never know what happens. It's as if I was asleep and couldn't tell what was actually happening because of being asleep. Its is crazy. It has been happening to me every night for as far back as I can remember.
Great video and awesome that you made this journey by yourself. I have this on my bucket list. I think in the teddy bear tent there was a body in there besides you. lol Thank you for sharing your story.
Hey man! I've never been to a Burning Man but I'm planning on it! How did you get there? Did you get a ride there and then just kept all your stuff in the tent? Food, water, etc.?
A very cool video of your experience. The night you blacked out, at least your camera and bike stayed with you. :) A great experience. I hope to make it one day myself. With a couple of friends though. cheers Mate!
great video, well done and put together... the whole atmosphere would have to be surreal... no doubt... a great distraction from life for a while... like living in a si-fi movie for a while... thanks to you this is now kinda on my bucket list if I really honestly had one...
I nearly went in 2016 and was even staying at the Green Tortoise Hostel, who are the only authorised tour providers for it, but decided not to as it was a lot of prep for 1 person already travelling for month. If I would go again, it would be alone. 99% of the time I travel alone and I have a much better and rewarding time for it. I have met so many wonderful people travelling and you make many friends who invite you back, which doesn't really happen when you are not alone.
Went last year with a friend who this year doesn't want to go. So I'm left to make the decision to go alone or not go. Did you feel like it was a good idea for yourself?
You need to take your own outfits. The camp I got a few things from was called costume cult. They gift you some things to help you with your style and all they ask is for you to walk down there catwalk in your new look
I am thinking to do Burning Man. I have never done it, and don't have connections who would be able to do it or who would want to do it with me. What would you say were the most challenging aspects of doing it solo?
Going 2019 if youre in Texas and have extra stuff i stripped my van out to help bring stuff. Im thinking ill have a trailer as well so maybe like a 6 person convoy! Get ready cause it comes up MAD FAST :)
i would actualy really enjoy going alone. id feel like i got so much more done on my own and expirienced so much by myself. i am a total introvert so thats probably why but i really think that would be a fun expirience P.S. alcohol is a crazy drug mate!
Jeff, yeap, I feel the same way hands down. I have also heard that people that go alone frequently end up finding adopted families/camps. The catch with going alone though is, it's much more logistically difficult.. you have to bring a ton of stuff. Tent, shade structure(one with room to hang in AND to go over your tent), food, water, grey water disposal etc. You could go easy on food and eat out of cans etc for a week but.. ugh. no. Precook, vacuum seal and freeze everything. Then heat it up in the freezer bag in warm water for like 30mins on the playa.. reuse the same water to do so as much as possible.
The car tower was just absurd. When we first got to our camp, our lead said " you must go to this, it's gonna get shut down". It was also my bf's first year.
I was there that year but totally missed the fireworks >_< so mind boggling how there's so much going on that one can totally miss an entire fire work show
I got a few questions since I kinda want to go experience this alone maybe.. did Carpool with someone? Could i park my car next to my tent? How did you shower? Did you cook your food or did you buy food once there?
Hi, I got to burning man on the burner express bus and they have a camp there you can join when you arrive called ‘hoverlandia’, if you need more info they have a Facebook group you can join :)
It really depends on how you do it, I spent roughly $2000 on flights, bus to black rock city with the burner express, camping gear, bike, bike transport with the bus and food
has anyone else ever noticed usually at the beginning the weather is terrible and then its pretty bareable other than the heat for the rest of the week?
You have to bring everything you need to sustain your life for a week. Food, water, shelter, clothing etc. You are not able to purchase anything there, because it is an event that wants to be free from the advertising, marketing and selling of goods. One of the principles of Burning Man is Gifting. People gift food and drinks, and other things, and share with one another, but you need to be prepared to be self reliant. So the only things you can purchase are ice ( to maintain cold food temperatures and keep people from getting sick from spoiled food ) and coffee. The proceeds from the sales of coffee go to support different local charities in the Northwest area of Nevada, so they are not trying to profit from the sales. Think of it like you would, it if you were to be going out into the middle of the wilderness in the mountains.
Melody P there are no showers on the playa but there are a couple of camps you can go to that you can get foamed and hosed down, definitely check camps out there are a lot of fun 😊 they will be in your burning man guide
Most people who go will do a sponge bath, in order to use very little water and to be able to get clean. The environment is such that you don't get dirty, in a traditional sense of the word. And others will have a camping like shower bag, which they will use to clean up with, while collecting the wastewater, to be disposed of off site, in order to protect and preserve the protected desert area that the event is held on. You just have to get creative with how to maintain hygiene, while you have to bring everything you need, in order to take care of yourself out in the desert.
