The problem with the power could be something really unassuming. In the back of our house, the breaker doesnt seem to have been set up right, but it held out most of the time. But we found when we were replacing the ceiling fan in my room, that one of the wires was stripped and exposed, and that wire was causing the breaker to trip. So ya, it could be literally anything in the garage that caused the black out. Happy hunting haha.

Just a word of advice. You might want to look into the warrenty for the set. Because the last thing we want is for you to try to replace something and it turns out they can only replace the broken one: 1. It was broken on the third tuesday of feburary on an odd year 2. That tuesday happens to be on a day with a full moon.

Eli, there's a spring on the tension handle on the 1x30. Just pull out on the handle to disengage the splines and move it to tighten it farther. For doing bevels on your 4x36, go on the USA Knifemaker site and get 2 of their glass platens. JB Weld those to the "platen" surface of the 4x36 and they will be the exact thickness of the belt. Will be much easier to do plunge lines and such.

Hey Eli! I work at Harbor Freight in the logistics sector and I just want to say I'm glad you went in! They have some pretty good stuff for the price. Though on a personal note, I'd honestly stay away from the Drill Master stuff. It might be cheap, but even cheaper made. Even though it's a little more expensive, Chicago Electric is probably the best power tool brand that the store carries (outside of the expensive af Hercules and Baur). There's been alot of times that we've had Drill Master stuff come back that was broken upon purchase (and probably broken on arrival on our truck), while I haven't heard that about CE items. Edit: HF does have a 90 return policy as long as you have your receipt. They'll return/exchange for any reason whatsoever within 90 days as long as you have your receipt.

You can destroy the belt sander (tabletop one) in 15 minutes if you either 1) don't use dust collection or 2) if you don't, you need to remove the rear shield. The dust will collect in the bearings and just rip itself apart. Otherwise it works great for 50 bucks.

Hey man as a harbor freight employee of 15 years I can tell you with absolute confidence that 50% of our stuff is trash but the 50% that's good are extremely amazing. I recommend trying the Bauer or Hercules products they can preform almost as good as a snap on for 1/100th the price as far as the mini cutter goes a angle grinder with appropriate wheel would function a lot better. also dodge all the drill master products and you can return anything at all! love the content man. All harbor freight brands are the same. Harbor freight owns all of them.
@RCichard
@RCichard 5 лет назад
not really, they put our fulfillment orders and multiple manufactures can bid to fill them. This is why one product will have multiple skews, and the skews have minor differences like the 21-gal compressor(casters, handles, feet, air-filters) vary for skew to skew. That being said, i look at the specific skew and compare the variable components and pick the one with the most 'heavy-duty' construction and the better fit and finish (if they pay closer attention to those deals, they may have also paid closer attention to the internals as well). TL/DL; Not all are the same, they are fufilled by various manufactures and then slapped with the HFT brands.
@setha6096
@setha6096 5 лет назад
@@RCichard Okay, that is very interesting. Also, that tip on looking for the best product is really good. And, it explains why there are always multiple almost identical versions of a product on their website. Thanks for the info.
@RCichard
@RCichard 5 лет назад
@@setha6096 no problem! I always take a look over the multiple skews and found nicer package, better fit and finish, and more detailed craftsmanship (knurling, threads, surface finish, etc) and the ones with higher quality removable components (casters, air/oil filters, hardware, valves/guages) are usually the primary manufacture and last longer/work better. Provided that your respectful to the product and packaging, they never seemd to mind if i open up two different skews and compare side to side... just dont be a dick and dmg the packing when taking a look and always put it back exactly how you found it and you should be fine. Best of luck man!!

@@RCichard I hate it when the good ones go "out of print" and all that is left is the junk ones. If I could get my hands on one of those old taiwanese made SAE color coded ratcheting wrench sets, I'd love it, but they were "ugly" like mauve and pink and pastel green colors, so they didn't keep them out long, the newer color coded ratcheting wrenches are abysmal. They also used to sell a made in taiwan ratcheting hex bit handle that was super low-profile, glad I got mine before they switched out to the one with hex holder on one side and 1/4" drive on the other, much much less tight space clearance on that tool, which is why you'd buy it.
@julianking2031

I would suggest that rather than machining some new teeth for the vise is to purchase a small leather swatch that you can wrap around the blade or the handle or whatever. This is certainly a very effective method when doing work on smaller things like knives or when you're working with soft things like deer horn or wood, Maybe that is only good fir when you are working with hand tools, but in my experience it does its job well and protects the material while causing minimal loss of grip from the vise. This would also give you a way to do some really precise stuff while having a good grip and not damaging a material.

That 1x30 is actually great for blades... Tighten the table by pulling the handle right, then down, then left, then up (repeatedly). Cut the back of the table off so you can tilt it towards the belt. Toss the side and the guard, makes changing belts easier.
@zacbailey8249
@zacbailey8249 5 лет назад
I've used the 1x30 belt sander to make over a dozen knives now, $115 - $235 each for the ones I sold, others made great gifts. I don't use the platform it came with because that plastic knob broke. So I just learned to freehand grind, which I prefer now. The motor is strong though, no sign of quitting on me. It's great to learn on, it's slow enough that mistakes don't ruin the knife. Maybe try putting a piece of steel behind the belt on your Ryobi 4x36 sander. It'll give your the same effect you're looking for with the platen on the 1x30.

I had the same issue with the work rest on the 1x30 at first. My solution was to take out the hex screw from the handle and re position it so that it was able to turn further without running into the motor. All in all its a pretty good machine for making some knives on a budget.
@stephanosmaramaldi5458

I highly recommend the wen 1x30 belt sander, and if you can find them some ceramic belts. The platform on the 1x30 can tilt up without any real modifications which makes bevel jigs so much easier. The ceramic belts are so much better than the aluminum oxide, they wear out much slower and don’t clog up like the aluminum oxide does, and in the long run are worth the money. Anyways I love your content Eli you turned me on to knife making have a great day, hope u read this.

The tightening issue you had with the belt sander can be fixed by replacing the lever arm with a nut and bolt. I have a similar one and one of my favorite things about it is that although it is cheap it works and I can improve most of its features via minor modifications.

You should build your own mini belt sander. Build it like a dock for your angle grinder. You'd just need some rollers and some welding and some steel. Could be an awesome little project.

The reason the 1x30in platform wasn't getting tight was the handle. the handle has a screw with a spring that you have to pull away from the machine, and move down to tighten more.

I use that exact blue vice for gunsmithing, that vice is not bad at all. that and that low profile vice is a suction style vice which all uniformally stop working in about two years and you end up having to mount them conventionally anyway. buy nylon or rubberized magnetic vice jaws for like 8 bucks on amazon if you are worried about marring things, cheap and easy to remove when you need to use the vice for more industrial stuff.
