I went to the border of China and North Korea | Dandong

In today's video I visit Dandong which is a city in China that borders the North Korean city of Sinuiju. I thought it would be interesting to experience the North Korean Border during a weekend trip to Shenyang. There are some other places you can visit as well in China that bring you closer but this was most convenient. Also being in the Liaoning Province I had to grab some DongBei (NorthEast) food.

It really depends on which part of the border you visit. There are other places within the border where you can see North Korean people farming and North Korean guards armed with assault rifles patrolling.

You have a very hungry sprit for knowledge and experience!! When I was high school student ,I visited border of North Korea and South Korea for school trip!! It was so good learning experience to know the situation in two countries.

3 more PEOPLE until 1K We are so excited to be going on this adventure with you! We love doing all of these China adventures with you! You always see and hear people talk about the border between North Korea and South Korea, but never with China. It's so crazy to walk that bridge realize that it just kind of ends. Like you said, we always hear about NK making it "look nice" at the borders as well, but life is super different beyond that. Oh WoW, costumes for rental for photos is interesting. Food looks delicious too! Really love your videos as always!

Your audio quality is incredible even with that wind as well :O I think I've heard about that amusement park and hotel on some other youtube videos. Would be so weird to see in person. @@JohnThomasAbroad it's one of the good spots if you want to see a not so crowded part. It's interesting because you can see much further into North Korea from the wall and you can take the tour on the river. Also the bridge in the evening is enlightened on the chinese site and dark on the north korean site.

Fascinating! The video of North Korea reminds me of the footage that they used to show of the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War. It looks...desolate. I’d love to know about the people there-what their daily life is like, what they think, what they feel, their impression of other people and places, etc.

I agree it’s fascinating. I’ve watched a few videos about daily life there but what you get to see if pretty scripted because you always have to be with a guide. It would be so interesting.

Hi I just found this is my hometown , and the bridge is near to my home lol. Your vlog is nice, and make me quite homesick. There is an artificial island located in the river which is not far from the broken bridge . If you go on it you will find the scenery of North Korea on the island is more clear than which on the broken bridge. By the way, did you have Korean food there?

@@JohnThomasAbroad oh that's nice, the island’s name is “月亮岛” which can be directly translated as “the moon island”. And there is a street full of Korean restaurants just between the train station and the broken bridge called “二街”（maybe called 2nd Street）

I recommend Changbai mountain Tian Chi, it’s beautiful and it only can be seen in 1/3of the year depending on the weather. It also belongs to half China and half North Korea

I went to Dandong too, but then crossed into North Korea for 4 days 😂😂. Crazy times. I was surprised that Dandong is a pretty nice city, just boring. North Korea trip was really interesting too, nice video man!

Nice video! If you’re interested in learning more about that piece of history and what led to today’s situation from an American perspective, I recommend a book: Korea, The First War We Lost by Bevin Alexander. I’m sure you can find sources to learn about the Chinese perspective where you are.

That railroad bridge was paused during Covid, but it has resumed in 2022 and still in use.

You and I were thinking the same thing. You stated there was no movement in North Korea and it seemed like all of that is for show. It really is eerie if you think about I think that city across the way is a ghost town and nobody lives on the border because that would allow them the opportunity to defect

I almost made it Dandong when I visited northern China in 2019. I did a bit research about the day trip that I heard from someone on the train. You have to hold a valid Chinese passport, and register with a Chinese tour company that is approved by the North Korean government. I am not qualified so I changed my plan and went to the border with Russia instead.

Hey Lenny. The reason behind the filters and music choices were because of a couple reasons. The first was that lives were lost there during a war and I didn’t think that happy music would be appropriate. The second reason was that the music choice was meant to demonstrate the mysteriousness that North Korea has for me as an American. The filter was a muted tone to respect the area I was visiting and quite honestly just love the filter. Hope that answers the question.
