The temperature in Beijixiang dropped to -35°C (-31°F), the coldest I have ever experienced in my life. Nevertheless, I had a great time in the "Arctic Village of China", or the "Chinese North Pole", as it is called.

I'm Austrian and I visited Mohe back in September 2000. The golden days of my globetrotting era!

Unbelievable... that was so long ago when there was no internet, plus anything inside China is still seen as unknown to outer world. I wonder how could you get information about travel destination to such remote and non-touristy like Mohe at the time back then? If we got a chance to meet up, I can sit tight to listen to your journey experience for hours.

@@GeorgeMartinus Hi! Thanks a lot for your very kind answer. Yes, of course, those were totally different times in many ways, but believe me - every generation of travellers is jealous about those who came before. At the turn of the millenium travellers were using the internet for E-Mails and for following the news. And we were taking either prints or slides that were developed at home, so we usually had no pictures to show each other. So we tried to discribe our personal highlights with our words. In total I travelled through China for about 13 months - 10,5 months in 2000 and another 2,5 in 2001 as I was totally attracted by it's enormous diversity and in many ways "formidable" nature - harsh deserts, an enormous karst and limestone complex in the south and of course this amazing amount of totally undiscovered high altitude mountain ranges. And there was virtually no travel information available - NO videos like this - that also made me so excited about it. There were some books available about China's natural wonders, one of them listed some of them from north to south - and the first one mentioned was "Mohe". And there was the "Lonely Planet", which just "mentioned" Mohe, but only for being it's morthernmost and coldest town. At Mohe's railway station I found a shared taxi for 1 Yuan that brought me to a zhaodaisuo (guesthouse) where I got a pretty good room for 10 Yuan. I spent a couple of days there and had a great time. I also visited the village of Mohe, located direcly at the Heilongjiang (Amur river). Looking back at that trip now, that all seems to me like a dream - like a different life.

What transports brought you to Mohe town? When I was in a hostel in Harbin (Jan 2018), I saw a poster tour to Mohe. It caught my attention because the photo shows an aurora in the dark night sky.

Yeah, but much colder than these 2 cities in winter. It's due to the cold wave from Siberia.

Are u a vegetarian or vegan. Your outerwear is not made of ducks down and your thermal undergarments are not of sheep wool. They are not able to keep you warm.
