I always felt sorry for Lancelot, he was unable to bear the love he felt for gin and that ended fatally, it doesn't mean that he was a traitor along with gin but at least he could redeem himself in this movie by dying in battle for arthur, one of the best gentlemen that camelot had.
I used to say this line to a special girlfriend from the mid 90s even after we'd drifted apart, and a year ago around this time as a brain tumor ravaged her I told her one more time over the phone. That was the last time I spoke to her as well. She didn't want friends to see her in that condition. Damnit something got in my eyes. Sure miss my Maggie.
wow what a tragic love story, my condolences friend it shows that you loved her very much, and if the truth is that lancelot's declaration of love is very beautiful and powerful
the handsome man is nicholas clay who died in the year 2000. he was the best lancelot. this would win any womans heart. beautiful words, beautiful man.
This is the greatest declaration of love I remembered since childhood when I saw this movie. Outdoes Braveheart. And 20 years later, I just re-connected with the woman who inspired me to feel this way, if God wills it I shall declare it to her. The unattainable woman...
This is yet another scene that was so powerfully depicted. The use of Wagner's "Prelude to Tristan and Isolde" here was exquisite and really added impact to the scene. Boorman is a genius. Guinevere was flirty and forward...she wanted to know as much as her handmaids, who had Lancelot's fancy. She clearly wasn't prepared for his answer, but the seed was planted. I love how Lancelot's line was so stunning that even Guin's horse seems dazed!
At the end Arthur tells a dying Lancelot he is the greates knight, but that is Perceval...he was the only one who would champion the Queen when Lancelot was missing...he was the one who found the grail after it was hopeless...Lancelot was a great knight but he was weak because he let his passions control him.
You know the one thing I actually don't like in this movie is the fact that Guinevere seems to only love Lancelot. Yeah she says she does love Arthur as a king and somtimes as a husband in this, but I always kind of liked the idea that she had a real love for him, and a different kind for Lancelot. But then again that does set this one apart from other versions as well. In any case it's one of the only love triangles I can tolerate. Ones like Bram Stoker's Dracula and Pearl Harbor are AWFUL.
Bram Stoker's Dracula "triangle" was an invention of the director, Francis Ford Coppola; and Pear Harbour is a stupid film that I don't wanna waste my time about!!
@TheMiddleagedTomboy Firstly, that's quite the generalization. I personally have never cheated and effectively ended 2 friendships by telling their female partner they cheat - just to tidy that stereotyping off. Here in Excalibur however she baited it constantly. She was hardly the devoted wife and was the catalyst for the death of the entire round table - awesome chick!
This is actually the saddest scene in the movie for here is the downfall of Camelot. The Bravest and best acknowledges that in his heart he has begun to betray his King, his friend and the land.
Is there no vid up here of the next scene? You know the wedding, and Merlin meeting the grown up Morgana for the first time. It's great but I can't find it anywhere. :(

It was a dangerous vow that Launcelot had sworn. By pledging faith to an idealised vision of Guinevere instead of seeking real love with a woman who would have well matched him, he set himself, his Queen, and his Lord and best friend and all he represented onto the path of destruction. He opened the door to his own temptation and hers as well by swearing to a purity that does not exist in any real world.
Arthur also was weak because instead of leaving excalibur between those two he should killed the bust.... and than he would never lost the kingdom either he would never engender his son with his sister Morgana. :-)
