Lol or he's already with her but they have to go seperate ways and in his style of lyricacy he's saying im.not giving up on you that is the lady. Kinda like -(Hey there Delilah) song.
Why is the song being interrupted by ads? I understand ads at the beginning or end, but to interrupt the song two minutes in with an ad sort of ruins it.
The way this song builds, from a simple bass riff. Each level, more climatic than the last......then silently levels off when the lyrics begin. Love it! Love this song!!!
Never heard this song until yesterday. I was walking around Walmart shopping at like 3am and there was literally nobody there bit this song was playing, it was as surreal as surreal can be at Walmart. I Shazam’d it and now it’s on my playlist.
local radio channel plays alot of mixed rock and thats how i found it. the lyrics say so much and the music itself just hits the right spot in the brain
It seems more like a song about an innocent crush from a teen walking past his crushes house on the way home from school. The fact you people think that makes him a stalker says far more about you than anyone else. And yes I know what death cab said, but look at them. I've never seen more obvious white knights in my entire life. It's not equality to give women everything good, while we get judged for being humans. Especially since the biggest wh0res are all women.
It’s a song about about obsession. The meditative texture, the long build up, the bassline repeating ominously, over and over and over without relief, is the point.
@@heroesofhogan233 "The song is basically about a stalker. It’s about this nice guy who wants this girl he can’t have, and he believes they’ll be together once she realizes how great he is-he just has to wait it out. That’s the part that makes the song really creepy, the delusion of thinking that they were meant to be together. It’s a really dark song. A lot of the material is about the inevitable disappointment people feel as they move through life, and things don’t feel the way they expect. No experience will ever match up to the idealized version in your mind." - Ben Gibbard
Symbolically the band is playing in a cold place and she keeps moving to warmer and warmer locations and her world and outlook brighten as she gets farther away from that coldness.
I love that the music stops for a moment when the vocals come in. It makes people think 4 minutes of building up the music were for nothing, but then the music comes back in and it feels so good.
fuck I was thinking that, Ive never really been into these guys cause all my hipster friends drove me nuts about them, Death Cab For Cuttie was a Bonzo Doo Dog band song to me lol
@@deleteduser6074 lol just hope you aint down here in a red state all these morons running to hardware stores trying to be all red white and blue fuck!
I'm 65 years old .... and I think this song and the other Death Cab for Cutie songs are wonderful. They are as good as the groups from the 1960s classic rock era of my teens and twenties ... So refreshing to see true original creativity again.
honestly if you listen to any Ben Gibbard song it sort of has that feel. i get the impression that he doesn't really know how to END a song, and they usually just trail off on the refrain.
I was never a big fan, but my best friend was. After he passed I started listening. I wish I could tell him “yeah, so I guess they’re ok”. They’re more than ok.
Just got back from travelling for close to a year. This was my go to song at airports, bus terminals, and late at night when I needed to be myself. Listening to it again always transports me to a different place. Timeless
@@nobodyinpa9 there are other ways to get rid of ads on RU-vid, and also it's not always the poster that choses where the ads will be on a video, that's just RU-vid
@@nobodyinpa9 yeah, I understand that, I just feel like it'd be a. bit unfair to blame it on the band rather then the platform. That's just how I understood your original comment, so if I got that wrong then my bad.
I'll never forget where I first heard this song. My high school art teacher played this in class one day (he used to always play awesome music). Mr Black if you ever read this somehow, you know who you are and you were awesome.
Alright, so I admit I'm not so young, cool and as hip as I used to be... first time I heard this song, i fell in love with it; I asked my son to look it up for me, because I had no idea who this group was... this "Dead Cat for Judy"... he laughed so hard i thot he was gonna wet his pants. After some days of discussion with his friends, he came back to tell me that was actually a pretty good name for a tribute band. I've rarely felt so proud, lol
and I guess I take a different view than most posters I've read... yeah, I can see the creepy stalker thing on the surface, but I also see the dedication it takes to convince someone you're worthwhile, if they'd just give you a fair chance. I've been married over 30 years now, and my wife would be the first to admit that without my perseverance we'd have been divorced early on... "Gotta spend some time, love, gotta spend some time with me!"
could be, i suppose... i just can't help but see it as being not willing to be swept aside without at least trying your best to make your case for love.
Me, too. This video has been in my favorites for over a decade. I still watch it once in a while. The woman in this is so beautiful. Great song. The band scenes make ya feel cold lol.
Lyrics - How I wish you could see the potential The potential of you and me It's like a book elegantly bound but In a language that you can't read just yet You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart There are days when outside your window I see my reflection as I slowly pass And I long for this mirrored perspective When we'll be lovers, lovers at last You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart I will possess your heart I will possess your heart You reject my advances and desperate pleas I won't let you let me down so easily So easily You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart I will possess your heart I will possess your heart.
That "just yet" in the first stanza is perfect - showing the POV's character. He can't put forward anything that challenges her. That's dweebdom. He could have said "that YOU can't READ - which is altogether different. Balls have died.
Indeed. The bass line slow-build start, those men in cold storage for the shoot, the images of travel by an explorer. The whole of it. I think this will be around a long time.
The first 4-1/2 minutes....just musical genius... holy shit. Or, “hey, I have this epic Bass line, let’s just jamb and see what kind of awesomeness we can make with it....ready? Go!”
I like playing along on bass and seeing what I can add to it. As simple as the rhythm is it's surprisingly easy to get off track if you're not paying attention
Never heard any other of their songs, but this one pops up in my mind from time to time. Theres something mythical about it, takes me to strange places, memories from the past. Not necessarily good places, but somehow hopeful idk haha. Cool piece

I kinda felt that disappointment with the song. The long intro made me imagine amazing things would happen at some point, but then just a song came and went.
True story. Years ago I had smoked a hitter and hopped in my buddies truck (he was 100% sober). I had heard of Death Cab for Cutie but had never listened to them. He had his radio tuned to some station I apparently never listened to. We happened to catch the song at the start and I was instantly captivated. I made him drive around until the song was over. I had to go home and search around for the song. It's the only Death Cab for Cutie song I know! Still awesome too.
Whatever it was they were going for on this one they absolutely nailed it. Can’t believe I forgot this song existed. Hadn’t heard it since my Portland, Oregon days.
I found this song many years ago in Salt Lake City...it traveled with me to Denver...and now I'm in Portland, OR listening to it again....❤ Like talking to an old friend....
There must be an extended mix somewhere? Like five hours long? Except, it would have an hour of commercials on RU-vid throughout... and that would suck
It has always blown me away.....It's like they build a perfect vessel to deliver a message......and the message is Fantastic...the build up is INTENSE!
I feel a need to comment on the music video itself. I remember when I first watched it when it just came out, being hypnotized watching the woman traveling all over the world, but in such an understated manner. That image of her has always stuck with me, especially since I've always wanted to travel on my own. Now, over a decade later this video has even more of an impact on me, I was able to accomplish my goal of traveling on my own and this video encapsulates the feeling of doing that better than any other type of media I've seen. It's a feeling of peacefulness, joy, wonder, melancholy and loneliness all combined into something beautiful. Which is exactly what the video shows, so thank you.
Betsy McCabe I agree with this on so many levels I also remember watching the video when it came out and I was still in high school dreaming of seeing the world and yeah I love how understated this video and the woman are it’s something that brings me back to this song over and over throughout the years
but Betsy, i must ask you...did you play this song while actually traveling? like on a walkman... while on a boat..or a bus or something, im jealous..i think i could do that forever
ALL LIES , LIES THE EVIL GOVERNMENTS OF THIS JESUIT RUN WORLD MAY THEY BURN IN HELL SATAN CAN ONLY MAKE YOU SAD ,LURE YOU TO THE WRONG PLACE 4 ETERNITY
sometimes a song defies its write time - by being a perfectly crafted piece of gold, that needs to be loved and possesed by people who posess the heart to understand a FKN good song
I love this song so much , the intro is so awesome . I've watched this a pile of times trying to figure out all the country's and city's that she is in , I love it. I'm not worldly by no means , I'm just a dirt farmer with head phones in the tractor listening to Great Tunes !!!
I've loved them for the past 14 years and tbh when I saw them live it was so disappointing...didn't lose any love for them but I'll stick to listening at home and setting up my vibe with them in the background..maybe I need to give their live show another try one day
I introduced that song to my ex. She possessed my heart and stole my bank account. The bitch's gone but the song stayed. It was hard listening to this awesome piece for a few years. But darn it, I'm taking back possession of it.
Good. Love is measured by the pain it inflicts. If you feel nothing you have had nothing. But then again... feelings aren't real. Is anything really real? Am I real?
Just know karma will eventually catch up to her. It may not be today or tomorrow like you wish but karma always catches up to you. That’s why good things happen to people who do good and bad things happen to people who steal and what not I’m so sorry for you that your ex did that.
I love the way it builds up. Not a huge fan of that. Very few can pull that off. "They do". We need more creative musicians like that. Talent is impressive!
I feel Death Cab and the Postal Service are both extremely underrated bands. Ben's voice is incredible both live and on his albums and his style has changed so many times it's really impressive. Saw them live for the first time a few years ago and I was truly impressed.
I didn't see any comments about the awesome metaphor of the video. Did anyone else notice that while she's off traveling and living her life, the band is stuck or have secluded themselves in the freezing storage room? The camera goes back and forth between the 2. The girls keeps traveling, independently having experiences. Then it switches back to our stalkerish friends in the basement. Notice when they're playing, their body language has this sort of bitter, mildly aggressive, frustrated vibe. And as they go over the lyrics, it seems like it's something they've done so many times. As a stalker goes over in his head so many times how he just needs the girl to see him the way he sees himself. I think they perfectly made a video reflecting how a rejected, borderline stalker guy would feel, while the girl is off leading her life. Awesome, artists involved in the making both this song and video.
Princess Rios Can't comment on drumming skill but I learn't the bass line on guitar and its far from hard, dead simple really. I will however say this song keeps a really tight groove on the whole.
