I feel this so much Jordan. I use Cracking the Cryptic for when I'm so stressed I feel paralyzed, and it allows me to focus on something slow and calm, but also intelligent and positive. Hope you feel better soon

You need to have a RU-vid account (and be logged in) in order to be allowed to like, you don't have to have one for watching (and be counted as watcher). This might explain the big discrepancy.

That is one of the most brilliant sudokus I’ve ever seen. Incredible setting by GBPack, and incredible solving by Simon. I hope to see more GBPack on the channel in the future if they keep this up!

Been catching up on the sudoku videos on the channel and this is without doubt one of the best puzzles I have ever had the pleasure of solving. The trio of swordfish on 9s, 8s and 7s using the trident shaped cage was spectacularly brilliant setting and it just led to wave after wave of enjoyment. Combinations of arrows, swordfish, x-wings, cage and box geometry, it pretty much had everything (there was even some optional S.E.T in there)! I imagine it must have taken a whole lot of time and effort to set so a massive thanks to GBPack for creating this gem and to Simon for an amazing job of showcasing it. Stunning puzzle. :)

Wow! So original! Love it when off-the-shelf "methods" like stingray and x-wing cannot make into a bruteforce approach by themselves (but still needed) and the other things needed are this elegant, proper deduction. Well done, thanks for the puzzle to the designer and for the solve to Simon I mostly did the same as Simon, would be interested if there are other paths. Took me almost an hour, but not because I was doing nothing... I was contemplating and calculating a lot... and it was fun.

Some SET between (Row 1 + Row 9 + The trident) = (Column 3 + Column 5 + Column 7) will give you a relationship that limits the four bulbs on the right to 7/8/9 and a set of digits in rows 1 and 9 to 1-4 plus a 5 or 6 with one degree of freedom. It doesn't work as the break-in but it would save some logic midway through the puzzle.

This was truly fascinating to watch. I really love how you break these puzzles down for people like me, who have never done a cryptic puzzle. It genuinely is very easy to follow along with and makes me want to attempt a couple puzzles like this! I think I'll have to download your app and give it a shot. Great stuff mate, keep it up!

30:06 This is something I note at the beginning when there's a cage with nine. the cells outside the center square must be repeated inside, but by simple sudoku, the tips of the trident cannot be repeated in the cells on the same row, meaning the 8 must be in one of those two cells and the 7 must be in the bottom two. Feels a bit like folding oragami.

I found a totally different break in : consider colomn 3 and 7 and box 5, then remove the trident from them. Then replace the arrows by their circles, and you have a handful of cells that must add up to 90, but the maximum you can put in is 92 (by the nature of the trident, all highlitghted cells in box 5 are seen by r4c8, making these cells 56789 = 35 at most). This means row 1 and 9 have a 9 in them in those cells, which puts a 9 in the trident, which in turn put a 9 in r4c8 (since you need a nine in either box 5 or r4c8). By putting a 9 in r4c8, the highlighted cells can now only add to 91, which puts an 8 on the arrows in column 5, then 7 in colomn 5 needs to be in row 1 or 9, at which point the maximum you can make the highlighted cells is 90, which is what they also actually are. From there it's not much different from Simon's solve.

Simon, you're doing it again. You had four digits to place in R9 - 1235, two digits on box 8, and two in box 9. Box 8 contained both 3 and 5. Did you look? No, of course not, that would be sudoku. Instead of a 12 pair in box 8, and a 35 pair in box 9, you had 125, 12, 235, and 35. It's no wonder you keep stalling and asking "what do I do now?" when you have such rubbish pencil-marking. Genius setting by GB Pack. Such elegant use of simple geometry to make what turned out to be quite an easy puzzle once its secret was out.

I don't usually comment with my solves, but I used possibly the most convoluted SET logic I've ever seen for the break-in, and I wanted to share. Start with col 2 + trident + col 8, and swap the bulbs in C2/C8 out for the arrows in C3; the sum is still 135. Then the second set is box 4 + col 5 + box 6, and swap the arrows in C5 out for the bulbs in C6. Remove cells in both sets, and the two sets must still have the same sum. Now, the first set has four 2x2 regions within boxes 1, 3, 7, and 9 - specifically, the intersections of rows 2/3/7/8 with columns 2/3/7/8 - plus a few extra cells in rows 1, 5, and 9. Take those four 2x2 regions and use an inverted Phistomefel Ring to swap them for cells in rows/columns 1 and 9. You now have more cells overlapping with the second set, so cancel those out as well. What remains in the first set is five cells each in row 1 and 9, and two cells in row 5, whose minimum sum must be 15 + 15 + 3 = 33. The second set, however, is just the four bulbs in C6/C8, and their maximum is 34 if they're both 8/9 pairs. Which means either you have a 7/9 and an 8/9 pair in those four bulbs, which requires you absolutely minimize the cells in the first set, or all four bulbs are 8/9, which means you have to add 1 to a single one of the cells in the first set, giving you either 1/2/3/4/6 for row 1 or 9, or 1/3 for row 5. Simon's approach was certainly cleaner, but I had fun putting that chain of logic together. Maybe I'll build a puzzle around that break-in myself sometime...

Such a fun video. I really love it when Simon gets thoughtful and quiet and then says, "Got it!" I so enjoy your enthusiasm, Simon. I gave a thought to giving this puzzle a try but ... well, I am learning more and more. Maybe next time there is something along these lines. And I also agree with the commenter from earlier who wonders why more don't give these videos a thumbs up? As I am writing tthis, there are over 32,000 views, but less than 2000 likes. Surely more of us liked it, right? (Oh one more thing ... I have really enjoyed the comments recently by Simon along the lines of, "If we do another book ..." - very exciting.)

It was one puzzle descended from heaven. The main idea was just beautiful. Even after cracking the puzzle, I could still enjoy how smooth and fluent it progressed to be solved. By the way, I started my breakthrough a little bit differently but totally related to the way you did, but I found your way easier. I just wanna explain my way so that you may find a trick to make it look easier. I used sets. I painted columns 3, 5, and 7 in blue. Then I subtracted 3 sets: cage; row 1; row 9. This left me with two equivalent sets, one containing all of the arow cells, and the other, some of 1st and 9th rows' cells along with 2 cells in the middlebox. Since no arrow cell could be 9, I inferred none of the other set's digits, including circles in column 2, are 9. But then I watched your method and continued with it. I feel like there are also great ideas in this puzzle that can be investigated using sets that are worth an explore. But it requires more experienced eyes like yours to look for. Again, while all of the puzzles that you solve are beautiful, this one was undoubtedly one of the absolute bests. Thanks, man!

Just knowing some can make & someone else can solve this is satisfying. I particularly like that it stays similarly difficult thru the majority of the puzzle - although I doubt I could have solved any of it. Certainly not without having watched this channel.

24:20 for me. Seen this type of puzzle before. Reminded me of the thermo that was done recently with the four bulbs in the same box. Here, the cage acted as the unifying group. And you could repeat all the way down to the 6. Really nice puzzle.

A fantastic puzzle that indeed lived up to Simon's "I wish Id Created this puzzle" title. I wonder if anyone broke in using SET. I got very close but with 5 digits in Row 1 and 5 digits in Row 8 and 2 digits in middle box adding up to 4 arrow bases in col 6 and col 8. The 4 arrow base can max add up to 34 which left one degree of freedom with the 12 digits in 3 rows add up minimum of 33 (15 + 15 + 3 )

I'm amazed how you were able to spot that weird swordfish on 9s immediately after starting the puzzle. My solve of it completely relied on SET, I had to use different sum equivalences throughout the grid and some coloring before I could make any real progress.

I used SET to solve this, but acted as more of kind of a guide than hard solve. Used the swordfish on 9s and that got me the break in. Great puzzle!

i feel pretty proud that i got to the 9’s bit in the beginning but i really failed to see how it was a swordfish without your guidance. perhaps that can be the next short? i understand x-wings and simple swordfishes that are 3 x 3 x 3 but these variants always get me like in this puzzle

Loved it, although too clever for me unfortunately. In hindsight I realise the title is brilliant...not only referencing the shape of the central cage, but also a very subtle maritime hint on how to break into it(?). Beautifully done.

How much we love the genius of this solve How much we facepalm the accidental 5 pencil mark in box 8. But its easy for us to criticise when we're not actually able to solve anything approaching this

Which I thought he might notice when he placed a 5 in the column, but he likes to take a more circuitous route and waited for a 3/5 pair in the row. That's why we love him! Similar to his explanation of why there couldn't be a 3 or 4 on the top 8/9 arrow in column 7!

Very cool puzzle. In my solve, I found a set relationship between columns 3, 5, and 7 on the one hand and rows 1, 9, and the trident on the other, and it was very interesting but ultimately did not really help me solve the puzzle. :) Eventually I did find the reasoning with the 78, but I was quite a bit slower than Simon: 69:05 in total.

I had an feeling the break in would be about hight digits, considering the 6789s on the arrow circles, which I had filled in routinely. But I couldn't quite get my head around it, so I watched the beginning of the video up until the part with the 8s. From then on I found I've really understood this unusual kind of swordfish making use of the extra region instead of a third row, and could solve it. Great puzzle, tough break-in - at least for me - but once you understood it, very beautiful, with some nice additional logic after that.

I want to call this swordfish "Neptuns Swordfish". This Sworfish is: C3 + C5 + C7 R1 + R9 + Roual Trident region Any swordfish where you have a region doing the work of a row/column, I want to call: "Royal Swordfish" in honor of this puzzle, and king Neptuns Trident.

The Times Cryptic Crossword number 12383 appeared in today's The Australian newspaper. Clue 17 Down: Curious disposition around City is on the level? (9) Answer : RECUMBENT (RUM BENT around EC) The clue Simon explained from the Independent crossword is much nicer. I watched Simon solving that crossword and his absolute joy at that clue was a joy to watch. I have been doing cryptic crosswords for over fifty years and this clue is the best I have ever seen. My previous favourite was from the Sunday Times Mephisto Crossword in 1976-ish. *S = Z + O. Emphatically. (9)* Any guesses?

ugh, that was a lot harder not using the trident-y-sword-fish-thing (which I didn't spot)... I noted that columns 3 + 7 add to 90, and used arrows/symmetry to push digits entirely into row 1, 4, 7 and R6C8... these cells were then pretty constrained to get to 90, and eventually unwound everything, but sadly with a lot of what-if

so i had to focus on the high numbers ..., i was trying to break it in using the 1, 2 and 3 possibilities in row 4 and the trident in column 5

35 minutes in, I see a 1/6 & 2/5 white dot in box 1. It's been really paired down. Column 2 is pretty rough in general, a lot has been used up.

Having a go... finding nothing relevant for 15 mins ... deciding it's not for me and watch the video...i am nearly 25 min in and he still didn't find any digit... so yeah... decision well made... GO SIMON...

I agree with you, Simon. That was a wonderful puzzle. But I disagree with you about something else. You are not inept. In fact you are most certainly very ept indeed. I could not have seen the logic for the break in at all, but I did follow your logic all the way through. Thank you so much.

Still watching and wondering if Simon will spot the thing that I did immediately: Based on the cage and sudoku (maybe through set), the digits in R4C3 and R4C7 MUST map to R6C4 and R6C6 in some configuration. Edit: 30:08 He got it!
