Bit of a different style of video today, but I just wanted to speak a bit on my experiences having attended #Purdue University. I've had an overall positive experience with the school, and don't intend for the video to come off like a super harsh criticism, but I think that the image portrayed by the public is simply misleading. Busy work is dumb and non-excusable, though.

Going to Purdue and graduating with a MET degree was one of the greatest things I've done in my life. I know what you are saying about the problems being long and having no time for a social life. I get that, and I will never forget all those all nighters doing homework problems six pages long and cramming before tests, but It was all completely worth it to me. The first few years were really tough because I didn't have time to do fun things with friends. It was lonely and made day to day life very mundane until I figured out how to combine my studies with my social life. I started making friends with the smartest people in my classes and we started getting together on campus everyday, usually at the many libraries or the Union, and did homework together. This made getting homework done and studying for tests so much more efficient because we could feed off of each other's strengths in particular subjects. I just wish I had done that the first year I got there. It would have made my life a whole lot easier. I learned so much more those last years because of the academic friends I had and we even managed to take in a movie every now and then. So my advise for any new engineering or engineering technology student is to make friends with people who are smart and have the same academic goals as you and try to help each other out. It makes a world of difference.

Hello, I have some questions wanted to ask you please. I am a accepted future student right now. While I choose the exploratory study program. Is it easy to choose engineering major? And what needs to do in the exploratory study? Thanku for your reply!!

I graduated in 90 with BS in Financial Planning NOT Engineering. But, desite not being Engineering grad I agree with your response. My last year + got so much better for reasons You listed. I've been living in Los Angeles since age 27; now 57. This young man is just going through some growing paint in life.

Based off of my experience so far in purdue ME, this is very true, but I don't necessarily think this is specific to purdue? I've got friends at UIUC, Berkeley, UCSD, all sorts of other colleges too that share the same experience. This seems to be a general critique about the expectations for college students and the university system in general rather than being specific to purdue (at least the latter half of the video about busywork). I will say that yah, so far, Purdue isn't all that it's chalked up to be within classes (this is an important distinction). Outside of class, the resources I've had available to me such as research opportunities, startup company resources, technical advice from professors on projects, a community of engineering students interested in building random shit with me, that's something that seems to be very close to what has been advertised with Purdue. The in-class portion is very run of the mill, but outside of class it really is top tier. That's just my two cents, but ig that may change over the course of the rest of my time in college - I'm a rising junior so I still have plenty left to experience

I am a Purdue graduate albeit not an engineer. As I senior level hiring manager, I will tell you that young people today don't get the same education as we did. The class sizes are ridiculous. I am not a proponent of online education for undergraduates. There is no replacement for practicing direct communication skills, hands on technical skills, troubleshooting, and how to operate in organizations. Many graduates come into interviews lacking in all of those skills. Employers want a junior staff member who can contribute to a team and is willing to learn. Merit is much less important than networking.

I’m considerably older than the Gloomy Gus in this video, but I graduated from Purdue. I have lived in several different states and worked in different areas from patient care to pharmaceuticals. Everywhere I’ve been my Purdue education was respected and praised. The quality of my education helped to forge my success and the strength of Purdue’s reputation opened doors for me. I’m sorry this gentleman’s experience was so lackluster but I truly believe he’s an outlier relative to most Boilermakers.

This 57 year old graduated from Purdue in 1990; not Engineering. Moved to Los Angeles at 27 and can assure people Purdue carries alot of weight in others minds out West. I'm surrounded by UCLA, USC, CalTec., etc students and alumni and Purdue University holds it's own with all of them.

As a hiring manager in the science/engineering field, I’ve found that the applicant who can collaborate well on a team, effectively communicate, be flexible, embrace constructive criticism and just work hard is far more valuable than the name of the school on their resume.

What I find helps with study-life balance is working on something that you like doing as a hobby. That way even when you’re “studying”, you’re essentially having fun. When you don’t need to take fun breaks because you’re already having fun.

How is everything going? You should make a video about where you are working and how well qualified you feel after graduating from Purdue. Was it worth the pain at Purdue?

Questions to everyone that graduated from purdue or other university's: 1. Is it easy to land a job in your area of study or does it take months and time to find one? 2. What is your income per year based on your field of study As for me i tried a vocational school and i didnt like the pay. So i got into the refineries and now work as a pipefitter sometimes foreman. My debt has been paid for and my pay rate ranges from $1,800 to $3,900 weekly paychecks. As for finding jobs it usually takes me a few hours to a few days or a week at max to find a job and i dont have to do interviews or dress up for one

PhD from Purdue. 1) You always look for a job during your whole last year. People who wait towards the end are pretty dumb (especially those who wait for job fair week). 2) Yes, that one is pretty obvious. 3) and 4)PhD is payed for so no debt in my case. In state people can afford it, out of state usually within 3 or 4 years.

Having viewed your video twice this Purdue Grad: 1990 BS Financial Planning has the following feedbak on your video. First is technical in nature. Too many jump cuts. If you are going to record this video please take time to do so correctly. I'm now 57 living in Los Angeles with decades of work experience. I've even worked in the new media in front of the camera and behind the scenes. You brought up Ivy Leavue education, but You never mentioned your own G.P.A. Sorry, but this is critically important. I knew lots of Engineering students during my 5 years there; yes it took Me too long. Since You used term, 'special place,' regarding priority Purdue University devotes to research I'm going to point out how many billions of dollars Stanford University has received from United States government going back to World War II. Fox Nation has a great series devoted to this. Point being research is area ALL Universities have placed high priority on these days weather they should or not is separate issue. If research is your major beef with Purdue all the Ivy League schools; which Purdue is not, do the same thing. When You mentioned salaries Petrolleum Engineers get You also made it clear the University still tells students what their salary expectations are or will be. Regarding the stability in the Petrolleum field young man job security is always something We worry about these days. Going to a different Engineering school won't change that one bit. As far as work being too difficult and not having time to study for exams. You just contradicted yourself when claiming the level of instruction wasn't good enough. Also, when I attended Purdue they gave us a free or open week before Finals. Through week 14 We sent to class and did our assignments. Week 15 We had to do whatever We thought was best. Then, week 16 Finals. If that has changed please let Me know. But, something tells Me it probably hasn't. Really sorry You don't feel your experience at Purdue Unviersity as a Mechanical Engineering Student has not met your expectations. But, having known many Engineering Students My 5 years there You haven't mentioned anything they didn't experience themselves. Bottom line You haven't enjoyed college as much as You thought You would. With all due respect welcome to the real world. I'm NOT trying to be a jerk, but I am trying to be realistic. I look forward to any response You wish to submit. If I missed something please correct Me. Sincerely, Rob Schmidt

That’s part of the adult life you realize it later and the hype is real fake. Imagine having a kid, working full time and having to go to college 😱 that was me a few years ago and I mentally couldn’t. Now I want to try purdue online. Would you recommend it? I’m just looking for a college/university where I can study online. I’m not looking for an Ivy league school.

Hi Kelly.......I'm a Purdue MS Electrical Engineering graduate who went the online route entirely back in the 2000s. I was a part-time student who worked a full-time engineering job that came with tuition-reimbursement as an invaluable perk. I found my professors to be accommodating to the working off-campus students, and just as fair academically with my West Lafayette peers. At least I will highly recommend it to anyone interested in pursuing that route. BOILER UP!

This Purdue Graduate; BS Financial Planning 1990 strongly urges You to avoid Purdue Global. Purdue Univerisyt itsself has genuine online curriculum they have developed over time. The net didn't exist back them. Purdue Polytech for example is still part of Purdue University. Purdue Global inists it is NOT part of Purdue Univeristy. With I had known that before wasting time and money on their writting class.
