Golf can be an intimidating game for beginners, and historically instructors have focused more on helping experienced golfers than people who are brand new to the game.
In this video Coach Ed shares his top 10 tips for beginner and high handicap golfers based on his history of teaching 40,000 private lessons with his students.

Great presentation, straight forward. When I started, many moons ago wondered why the lessons I took they never explained the golf swing or body action. In the end I had to dig it out myself. Your presentation would have cut years of frustation away. We can always learn somthing at any age .

“Swing on a circle with a square clubface…” golf’s fundamental concept. Starting with 4 clubs would have saved me a lot of frustration and taught me feel for distance and trajectory. Using a lofted club to chip on parkland courses makes a lot of sense and contradicts a lot of instructors. “Swing plane (circle) is 90° to spine.” I know I am guilty of too upright posture. I’d love to listen to you advise an intermediate golfer on course, as you discuss shot dispersion and planning, especially the trajectory and where to land partial wedges. Thank you, Sensei for sharing your wisdom.

Thanks for the comment! We have many videos planned to cover more advanced topics like shot dispersion and course management coming in the next few months, any questions you have in particular?

Do you have any rule of thumb for how much rollout to plan for with partial wedges? With mid irons, what yardage (front, cover, rear)? How do you choose which side of the green to favor? Do you think you should almost always use a 3/4 swing or less into the green? I’d love to hear your mature opinions, and I think other would too. @@TheGolfSensei

Immediately i started with a full set i bought at the local caldors….guess that “dates” me as pretty old hehe…..but within that full set ,if i think back, ibet i used the 3 iron, 7 iron ,pitching wedge & maybe 9 iron with a putter90-95% of the time . (For 10 +years i wouldnt even attempt a driver on course due to a boomerang slice .tee off with 3 iron ,if i didnt mess up the tee shot too bad itd be the 7 to green…then when the 7 would land left or right(or short ) of green itd be the pitching wedge to get on …after par strokes to get to green id then 3 putt it home 😬😜🤷🏼‍♂️…sad part is , 30+ yrs later ive gone back to those early scores again ..not that i was ever great , but to average mid 40’s for many years then go back to mid 50’s or higher hurts hehe

As a new golfer, I'm really excited to get such valuable information. I was just at the driving range using your advice and was wondering about the way you suggested measuring your distance to the ball. When I center the club head at the ball, it seems the distance to the end of the club reaching just above my knee, seems a bit too far from the ball. Should I stand at that distance or should I stand several inches closer to the ball; which seems more comfortable. Again, thanks for all your knowledge and time!

Generally having the club hit a bit above the knee (1" or so) is a good checkpoint, but everyone is built a bit different. And as we mention in the newest video, some pros like John Rahm stand pretty close to the ball and still play quite well

the grips are thin bc the shafts are thin, and you carry 14 of them which have to fit in the bag, if it were ONLY ergonomics the grips would be a lot more like tennis and baseball grips

Hi for Tip 5, hands, are you saying you should not use any “hand force” to hit the ball ? Does all of the force come from the body turn and arm swing, and not from the hands ? Thanks !
