Another old timer here, 71. Boris Karloff played the original Frankenstein monster, and he was 5'11". It was the prosthetic head makeup and the boots that gave him the height. Other films I will suggest, even tho some are earlier: "M", Mad Love, Metropolis, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Bride of Frankenstein, Day of the Triffids, 20 Million Miles to Earth, The Fly and The Time Machine.

Radio stations at the time would feature radio shows about supernatural creatures, and alien invasions. Orson Wells performed something similar as the newscaster at the beginning of the movie did, and he ended up in considerable hot water. He was actually doing a commercial for the movie War of the Worlds, and it caused a panic.

I fit your time fancy, Born 48 became aware in the fifties. high school in the 60's Beatles into 70's. yeah 9/11 sucked. what they did. Pc's and the internet media came into the nineties. When 2000. came around the world did not end. Interesting changes. A kid who watches 2001 today, will never get how revolutionary it was in the sixties. there is no way for them to know that watching the movie about things that did not exist when it was made. the changes spiral along and are fascinating to watch.
Ye, at 70 +... I absolutely prefer the original mid 50's Sci Fi - radiated ants etc to newish copies. - note the best King Kong is the 1933 Fay Wray version. for 50's flicks - 12 angry men. Giant. On the Beach. Ben Hur. of course the nutty. ' quick, here come the Nukes, duck under yer desks' came along. my dad had bomb shelter plans on the dining room table. Kennedy murder ( s ) . Beatlemania.
I don't think they handled that final message very well. Earlier Klaatu stated that the problem was that we are on the verge of entering space with our nuclear weapons and war mentality. So the third option is that we could just stay here on the planet and kill each other. They would be fine with that. Anyway, he spelled it out with a direct comparison to man kinds decision to have laws enforced by police. Don't murder or rob anyone and you don't have to FEAR consequences for those actions.
