Thats what came to mind for me as well. How well would a stock frame hold up without the bracing? The frames don't need to be more than stock if everything goes right, when the rider can be smooth and suspension is good. How about when things go wrong? The pros will crash really hard, pick their bike up, and be at it again like nothing happened, or case something hard. How many hits like that can a stock frame take before it snaps mid race? Also, I don't know how long they run the same frame in the bike. Do they use it for the season, or are they replacing it regularly?

@dormantmenace yes but gussets can be added, different engine mount brackets can be used, offset bearings in the head race can be used, subframes can be modified or changed, transmission ratios can be changed, so the whole feel of the bike can be way different from stock. I think that's what the riders were talking about. The already-stiffened chassis is less liked and the teams won't let them start with a more forgiving chassis.

That's Honda. They develop a bike, have a ton of success, then go backwards (look at the first aluminum frame, McGrath left because of it). Look at MotoGP and Marquez. Honda won't fix the bike, Marquez goes to Ducati and is instantly faster on a bike he doesn't even know. Honda can be great, but Honda also has an ego. When they get it right they are unbeatable, but when they get it wrong they get it REALLY wrong.
