This video is almost one and a half years in the making... I know I usually don't apologise for things like this but people have been asking for this video repeatedly over the last year and I feel a little bad for letting them wait so long, anyways, the video is finally finished: here's HOW I annotate and highlight my books.
If you're interested in knowing WHY I started to write in my books, watch the video I made last year: • I Write In My Books | ...
If, for some weird reason, you are now interested in ALEXANDER HAMILTON, check out my HAMILTON DIARIES: • Video

Wow, the wavy pages from crying is fascinating. Imagine finding a book in a second-hand shop and realizing that the previous owner cried over the pages! That is really powerful.

Yep. I also just really like reading an already annotated copy and feeling the prior reader's anger and joy, I've been reading some pre-annotated Shakespeare plays recently and it made the reading experience so much better.

I'd love to see more of your annotated books! That one looks soooo cool!! \^-^/ I love how you don't have a strict system and I like the idea to always change the colour of the highlighter, when a thought is finished. Keeps things clearly seperate from one another. In regards to the problem "how to annotate when you're on public transportation": I only use a pencil in my books, and small pencils can be fitted into most pockets. (And yes, last spring when I took my winter coat to the laundry I just remembered to take a pencil out as I handed it over... but mostly I put pencils into every bag/backpack I regularly use)
@booksbyleynes
@booksbyleynes 6 лет назад
Thank you! My ways of annotating also differ from book to book, sometimes I prefer pencils to highlighters but all in all annotating isn't really a hustle for me and quite doable wherever I am... but you are soo right, there is always at least one pencil in my pocket/bag. :D

Oh my God! I wanna read your version of the book so much!! Like I had to pause to 1) read the annotation and 2) to laugh my ass off. Like I loved and adored your comments and your references from the musical. I'd never have believed that reading a book about someone who dies 200 years ago would be this hilarious. I am someone who is anti-annotation, so I mostly write in my reading journal about what I’m reading and use flags. But I find it really cool what you have done. I guess I’m just too type A lol. Recently saw Hamilton and loved it, nearly cried once!! I have this book as well and the show has definitely bumped it up on my TBR.

@booksbyleynes 6 лет назад
What do you mean NEARLY cried once? To sob your heart out during It's Quiet Uptown is a duty that shouldn't be taken too lightly. ;) Jokes aside, everyone interacts differently with their books and that's perfectly fine. As much as I like the aesthetic of a book journal it's somewhat too much of a hustle for me to really keep up with it.

@@booksbyleynes Allow me to try to convince you: I think it is hardly possible to do anything (so as reviewing a book) without letting some key characteristics of one's being shine through the mask of objectivity/formality. What you do while discussing, talking and explaining is presenting an ongoing stream of information for the observer. Not endless, but uncountable amounts of nouances and tiny details. Some might say, the main focus is on the book and I partly agree, yet there is also another thing being shown. Something that is uncontrollable, impossible to hide. That is you. And yes, that sounds creepy, but I like that specific part.

Spinster's Library I‘m glad you liked it. :) And yes, I‘m annotating all of my books, so fiction, poetry, plays, just everything. Even though I usually annotate a little less as I don‘t have to look up that much, it‘s then more about my thoughts and how I like the scene/characters/whatever. :)
@TheWordN3rd

The summaries are something I've never thought of. How do you go about doing those at the end of a book? Is it just all the quotes and thoughts? Or do you go into more depth?
@booksbyleynes
@booksbyleynes 6 лет назад
It's a mixture between my favorite and/or important quotes to illustrate a certain point I'm trying to make in my review, and then just some of my thoughts. But oftentimes it moves organically into analysing certain themes/characters/whatever. All of my summaries turn at one point into reviews that I then proceed on putting on Goodreads.

@booksbyleynes
@booksbyleynes 3 года назад

And don‘t feel bad for donating annotated copies, you‘re literally giving them books for free, in German we have a saying „einem geschenkten Gaul schaut man nicht ins Maul“ which basically means if you someone gives you a horse for free, don‘t critically examine it, just cherish the gift. :D

OMG ok so I never annotate in my books because they're too perfect BUT I was reading Alexander Hamilton from the library and for the first time in my life I found myself desperate to note certain lines and facts. I found myself wishing to take a pen out and scribble all over the book so I bought myself a copy and did just that. So when I saw this video's thumbnail I decided 'why not, I just started annotating - even if it is only one book - so I might as well see how others do it for possible tips' And much to my surprise as soon as I click on the video I see ALEXANDER HAMILTON BY RON CHERNOW - my exact copy as well! I just found that a great coincidence!! Also I loved seeing things you've noted in comparison to me. However, yours is STUNNING, mine is literally a black pen just underlining things because I'm lazy and I also do most of my annotating/reading on the train. But this video made me determined to start using highlighters. So much nicer. Though I still wish I could steal your copy for the maps and family trees :)

I found this video really unique actually. I personally have never liked reading, as I have a troublesome attention span, and can never finish a book. However a teacher of mine taught me that annotating is fucking great to keep your attention. Other videos I've seen seem really pointless to me? They say "so I just write with pen and highlight, it's that easy!" But it's not. I like how you mentioned you just write what you're thinking, and that really helped me get the picture.

This video is really helpful for someone like me who was afraid of making permanent things on the books, specially if the annotation is not that serious or doesn't look smart af. lol Now I realize that even the little and funny reactions to the passages enrich the experience and help us remember our feelings towards the book, so I'll annotate with no fear now. Thank you so much for showing us this! ❤️

Fascinating! I just finished Pillars of Fire and filled it with annotations - "WTF"s like yours, but mostly "SMH"s and angry-face doodles. (It was frustratingly intense.) I used to highlight long ago, but a soft pencil is now faster for me. Your maps, diagrams and fonts, though, inspired me to try that method. Thanks!
@booksbyleynes

haha "WTF"s and "SMH"s are the best, even though I also use a fair share of snarky "LOL"s when characters are acting stupid. :D

wow! thats dedicated. Its fascinating to see how other people read and if they put notes in books and what is noteworthy to them. You seem to went the extra step and put additional Information in it. Thats awesome! I started having a pen around while reading, so i can put ideas or follow up thoughts in the margins, but thats about it. It helps to stay focused, i noticed that. Do you annotate your fantasy/fictional books as well? How long does it take you to read a book that way?
@booksbyleynes
@booksbyleynes 6 лет назад
Couldn't agree more, annotating helps me a lot with staying focused whilst reading and keeping track of things. I annotate every book that I read but I realised that I tend to annotate less when reading fantasy because these reads aren't necessarily "educative" for me, I just read fantasy for fun so it's usually just a bunch of "LOL"s and "WTF"s in the margins... but I do like to underline beautiful quotes. :D

Queen of annotation!
@booksbyleynes
@booksbyleynes 6 лет назад

Thank you for this. I love non-fiction and always struggle with fiction even though I feel drawn to fiction. Remembering to annotate fiction like I do for non-fiction has helped me in my first small steps into the fiction world ... Animal Farm of course!

How long did this take you to complete this book doing all this?
@booksbyleynes
@booksbyleynes 4 года назад
I hosted a read along for this book, where we only read around 100 pages a week, so it was an 8-weeks-long event. I uploaded 20-30 minutes videos each week to discuss the content etc. Therefore, it took me much longer than it usually would've taken me reading and annotating a book of this size (usually it would've taken me 1-2 weeks, depending on the subject and writing style).

Usually when I feel the need to annotate is when something is really annoying to me, and if it happens to often I know I'll give the book to charity so I refrain to make any notes/highlights... When I'm reading a really good book I'm in the story and can't think of other things. I should start more seriously, at least to mark the passages that I would gladly reread. I love your cope of Hamilton though! And that you annotate the sh*t out of your books.
@booksbyleynes
@booksbyleynes 6 лет назад
I get you on the anger part, sometimes I get so frustrated the page isn't looking pretty afterwards. :D But as I have the rule to keep all the books I read, I don't have the dilemma of having to give a torn book to charity. :D

Haha, I don't keep books that are less than 4 stars. I loooooooooooooove to move and I'm not hauling my books from one flat to another every year. But it's cool that you can keep yours, it makes for beautiful shelves, full of memories!

@booksbyleynes
@booksbyleynes 6 лет назад
