I can kind of help you understand what he means here. Charlie is the kind of person who just writes to write sometimes when something comes into his head. That doesnt necessarily mean he's writing it for himself though just because its in his head. I mean when you think of a music producer who doesnt actually sing or perform, they do this with every song they write. Sometimes they do have an artist in mind who's voice or vibe fits the music and sometimes you have artists who only hear their own music in their heads when they produce something. Think of it like a movie writer, they are rarely ever the actors in their own films. I actually know they guy who co-wrote some of the more recent Batman movies. His dad was mine and my son's pediatrician in a random town in PA lol but anyway, the point is, his son was never an actor, but he was amazing at writing and his movies eventually crossed the big screens with others showing off that work in the physical sense. Think of Charlie Puth as a writer and producer first and an artist second because if a song comes to him and its not something that fits him, he will pass it off to an artist it suits better. So while part of it is discerning his style from that of others, its also just something that comes to him and its not necessarily planned to be for him or anyone else but when its done, in the end its not for him as an artist but rather a different one would be better for it. Theres also plenty of producers who turned into artists too so its really interesting to understand the behind the scenes things sometimes.

He's talking about Creativity ("I wrote the song") and Destiny ("Never meant to be for me"). It's not "cause of the hook" because he literally says this goes for all his songs, "With all the songs that I write if they're not meant to be for me it's just is what it is." What I'm curious about is how he knows if a song is meant to be for him or someone else? I'd need the insight of a musician that could clarify.
