Ian was the only Do It Yourself-er. The band were all seasoned professionals. Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks were proper punks, according to Ian's doctrine- self-taught have-a-go merchants (who were great).

I think of him more as the guy who's at the cross roads of ska, funk, and vaudeville. He definitely is a category all unto himself! RIP dear Ian.

Ian Dury had nothing to do with the original punk movement, just happened to come to prominence around the same time and shared some of the same sensibilities and anti establishment attitudes of punk. It was a very, very fertile time in British music.

I love Ian Dury, and the Blockheads, what an amazing band. He was undoubtedly a genius-level writer and his Lyrics are up there on the higher end of the spectrum. However, it's a stretch to imply he wrote goodder English even dan moi.

Zetetik - I’m a big fan of the Fall, but I have mixed feelings about Smith’s lyrics. They’re always full of great images, original similes, and great verbal rhythms. But they’re so cryptic much of the time, built up of private references and bits and bobs of ephemeral cultural references. Fall records ought to come with footnotes.
