Today on Logan Sounds Off I interviewed a music hero of mine Ian MacKaye!
Thanks to my dad I've loved listening to Ians music including Fugazi and Minor Threat......I
still can't believe that it really happened but it did and I hope you enjoy listening to how we got on!
My name is Logan Kelly and I began my podcast, Logan Sounds Off, when I was 10 years old in January 2022. I love music, radio and reading and on my podcast, Logan Sounds Off, I will be sharing interviews, album reviews, book reviews and a whole lot more!

Glad to see Ian is still Ian, his answer to the very first interview question is 10 minutes long. For a guy who wrote one minute songs that’s funny to me. Classic . Great interview!!!

Straight edge is a complex topic which warrants a concise answer since there are still a great deal of newcomers who falsely believe Ian intentionally created a movement

Great: Punk can be a sound, a fashion, an attitude or a philosophy, but at its most essential, says Ian, punk is a free space to present new ideas that doesn't kowtow to the profit motive.

@Psychrophore That’s exactly the point I was making. Honestly the conversation of “real punks” and “ selling out” is so stupid and usually once you hit 16 years old most people quit talking about it. Check out the song “sellout” by Bigwig. I always really liked the way he put it into perspective as a band member. 🤘

Most of the straight edge bands and fellas from the second wave of s.e., i mean the youthcrew movement, sell out and still trying to cash in as much as they can, even if not straight or into hardcore anymore, Jan did not

i have seen several interviews that ian has done with kids, and he always treats them as adults, and does not talk down to them, which sends a strong message of respect to these kids. props for that.

Ian has always been that way. I’ve lived in the DC area since the mid 90s and Ian was very often showing up at shows of other small local bands (for example at the an annual show at Fort Reno Park, a DC punk tradition), just supporting the scene like anyone else would. Great interview by the way congratulations on all the views!

D.I.Y. is his philosophy, of course he’d be more inclined to do an interview of this type than with Rolling Stone or People. I’m just excited to see a 12 year old interested in interviewing Ian rather than whatever pop star is relevant now.

Thanks for doing this interview. Ian has been a strong influence most of my life. I am 49 years old who just got diagnosed with cancer. It is good to see an up to date interview with this guy.

This interview was amazing. Logan, you have more talent interviewing than most professional adults. Ian Mackaye is such a humble, down to earth dude. He has had such an insane impact on punk rock and you'd never know it talking to him. A true legend in every way.

Hello, Ian if you see this, I was your terrible basement neighbor in 93-95, I was friends with Paula & rented from C&L too. I am extremely embarassed to this day that my friends liked to scream FUGAZIIIII every time they dropped me off at 3 am. I was out being a lesbian avenger, grad student, and lush, and didnt quite appreciate the situation. But lol, i always get extra attention whenever I meet musician and tell em I lived next to you... I think you might still be on the old street, hope it's still an amazing neighborhood. I'll miss the "real roars" from down the road as long as I live ❤

I saw Fugazi play in Hawaii in the nineties. This was the best concert I ever seen and I been to a lot of shows. Everyone who was there that I know says the same thing.

Agree. Saw Fugazi at the Outhouse in Lawrence, KS and by far the best show I ever saw. Out of 100s, by far the best. During the Repeater Tour and was playing some stuff off Steady Diet. Not sure if that album was out yet. Anyway, in their prime.

Logan, you did a great job interviewing Ian. I've met him a couple times and he's the most down to earth dude and has an incredible memory. Fugazi is my favorite band of all time. I remember when the Coriky album was delayed because I had pre-ordered it on Discord. Ian wrote a release explaining clearly what was going on and we waited a little bit of extra time. That's the way to do it, and it's a great record. Coriky, please come to So Cal soon!!

I lived next door to him & some guys in the band for 2 years. Didn't know them much, I was into protesting and going to grad school lol, but got to hear some jams! As a rural Hispanic, Minor Threat was incredibly liberating. Although I was never straight edge, the message transcended any affiliation. Ian, huge respect to you for taking the time to do this interview and being patient. Similarly, respect to the young man for being curious and motivated!

​@logansoundsoff I'm an old fart. It's gonna be great seeing you evolve and grow as a critical thinker and as an interviewer. I imagine you will get your share of jerks in reaction to some of these videos. The important thing is to not get discouraged and keep focus on your purpose. It gives me a lot of hope knowing there's elements in this generation, albeit thousands of miles away, whio will carry the torch. You don't need to shave your head or wear a spiked mohawk to be punk!

ian was my first interview straight out of journalism school, working for street press that were promoting an upcoming evens tour. we had a 30 minute slot but we spoke for over an hour. as a 21 year old, i was dreading it; that i'd say something stupid, get something wrong, you name it. but he cracked jokes, was very easy to talk to and gave me lots of material. i couldn't imagine having the guts to do that at your age! hats off, chap. keep going.

This is awesome to see, I'm so impressed, nice work, and for Ian to take the time, is so cool! He was one of my favs growing up, saw Fugazi a few times, in Ottawa at Porter Hall and in New Orleans, listened to them over and over. Yet, I've not heard him very much in interviews, so this is great. So impressed with you Logan, thanks for making this happen.

I was 12 in 1978! My old man was into classical music so he introduced me to Beethoven and my uncle introduced me to The Beatles & The Stones but Punk...I think Punk discovered *me.* 😉Your dad has excellent taste and so do you. I saw Fugazi just twice but they changed my outlook on certain aspects of life probably even more than the original punk groups did. Great interview, really enjoyed that.

Glad he touched on Chumbawumba. I saw Chumbawumba open for Fugazi at a show in Washington D.C. well before "Tubthumping" and was really impressed by their performance. Threw me for a loop when this random band had their massive hit!

Ian seems to be one of the coolest dudes on the planet. I always liked fugazi, specally for the drum sound, but I love the evens. Ian´s baritone guitar sounds killer and I really enjoy his playing style.

Minor Threat was hugely influential, & stood out to me, as I was becoming immersed into “punk” (late 80s, early 90s). Fugazi came to town with Nation of Ulysses, and HOLY COW (Cows were always mind blowing, too)!! I’m most thankful for Ian putting out the records of, & touring with NOU. That was a “born again”, eye opening moment. “Punk” is a lot of things. But, a lot of things called “punk” are definitely not. Dudes, in suits, with crazy slick hair, lighting strips of firecrackers & wailing revolutionary rhetoric, between random horn blasts & chill jazz dabs, is punk AF, IMHO. Did Chomsky do a Brittany & shave?

Being from the DC area, I saw in real time the influence Minor Threat and the local punk scene had on the kids. Even though I was a classic rock, heavy metal kid at the time, I had a secret respect for it. I know now that Ian is a modern philosopher. Evan as a kid, he was wise beyond his years. I'm fascinated by his dedication to archiving everything. What's that about? Frank Zappa did that too. Some kind of genius trait maybe. By the way, Logan, great questions great interview.

excellent interview, worth watching more than once. logan, there is a book i think you would enjoy reading if you don't already have it. "Threat By Example", have you heard of it? i don't have my copy with me so i can't give you the ISBN, but you should be able to find it. i found it inspirational, the different stories and articles submitted by people like Ian and Chumbawumba for the book.
