what i wouldn't give to have this guy as a mentor and instructor. He taught me how to groove, how to play to paradiddles, double paradiddles, and how to do the drumroll without ever saying a word directly to me. All I had to do was find a video of him instructing on how to do it. This guy is my hero.

The theoretical knowledge adds to the performance. Articulate , intelligent superstar with charisma and strong work rate. Possibly the best ever rock drummer with J Bonham a close runner up IMO for the incredible intro and finale to Rock n Roll.

Exceptional drummer and musician. As a early teenager I saw and heard him at Göta Lejon in Stockholm ca -80 (?) with Whitesnake. They rocked and rolled the paint off of that movietheatre’s walls. And Ian Paice drummed the merrow out of your bones, still in a very very brilliant way. One of my all time favourite concerts.

This is the best advice for any aspiring drummer. I think most drummers start off trying to cram all their chops in before maturing to a less is more philosophy which I learned from an interview listening to Cozy Powell

This guy is flippn amazing! how come Iv not heard much of him! Maybe it was the fame of smoke on the water as a legend song that overshadowed him! but dude, what feel and technicality he has, one of the high end greatest of all time. I guess it was these late 60s drummers who really understood where to take jazz to the next level.

And, of course, the 'drive' behind the legendary Deep Purple.

At :40, check out Rembrandt's 17th century painting 'The Night Watch' and you'll see this guy with the big drum on his leg like Ian says. I mean Ringo brought drumming into the modern age with his matched grip, and now it seems like when i look around we're going backwards with 'traditional' left hand grip showing up more and more. Think it over.

I know I'm going to be attacked, but I'm free to voice my opinion. Previous to recent years, Bonham was considered a good drummer, but not the king, the greatest drummer around. He was a heavy, hard grooving drummer. He played a killer shuffle, but that's about all that impressed me. It seems there is consensus on RU-vid that Bonham is the standard by which every drummer should be measured. I've seen Bonham, Moon, Buddy Rich, Danny Seraphine, Charlie Watts, Phil Collins, Alan White, Ian Paice and many, many more live. Back in the day when they had "festival" seating at concerts and you could get right up to the stage. Bonham never did anything that made me want to go home and try to learn it. I've never had the pleasure to see Bill Bruford, but he has always been one of the top for me. After watching Buddy Rich, maybe 15 feet from his kit, I went home and devoted all of my spare time to practicing rudiments and changed to the traditional grip from a matched grip. Do I think Buddy is the best? Hard to say. Each has something that give's me a desire to improve. Even Bonham's shuffle!
