The world premiere did not take place in London but in New York at the Lincoln Center with Zubin Mehta directing the first three performances with the New York Philharmonic, November, 1986. It would be more truthful to refer to the London performance listed above not as a world premiere but perhaps as the UK premiere.

Stunning performance. This was my introduction to the piece when I was 14 and I loved it. This glorious RU-vid channel seems to be mysteriously out of circulation for the moment so the correction may not be immediate I fear.

Hugely powerful composition, but as usual with Xenakis he wrote it for himself and not the people who have to listen to it.

Who says that? I immensely enjoy Xenakis' works.

@@alejov923 I'm sure you do Alejandro, but check statistics before you respond. His music is just not played in today's concert halls throughout the world. It's unpopular. Like you I don't dislike it, but please accept my initial comment.

@@DavidA-ps1qr that's true. I really think it's a shame, since some of his orchestral works are truly savage and relentless. I mean, Xenakis' music can be truly exciting. With the proper exposure pieces like Jonchaies could be well received.

@@alejov923 You are absolutely correct. I enjoy a challenge listening to all music, but often feel that composers write music they want people to hear rather than what people want to hear (in the name of art). Thank you for recommending Jonchaies, I've just listened to it. By far the best I've heard from Xenakis. I'm far from convinced that he is a "great" composer, but this work has enlightened my respect for him that I failed to appreciate before.

@@DavidA-ps1qr You're welcome. I'm happy to have contributed to broad your appreciation of Xenakis. My own experience says that you should listen to them expecting to be swept away, I mean, many of his pieces have a visceral and primal appeal. By the way, you can listen other pieces such as Lichens, Ata, Nekuia and Oresteia, his only "opera". He also has several interesting chorus pieces. I really hope with time, Xenakis orchestral works are going to have a place in the repertoire of some symphony orchestras.
