The thing is, Desormeaux didn't know what was wrong with Big Brown and why he didn't have anything left in the tank. He didn't know if something was wrong with him physically or not. All he knew was that Big Brown was not the same horse he was in all his previous races. He was being cautious and thats better than pushing him to finish and risk injury.
You dont finish out a race that you cant win, period. If you look at any racing form in any country you will see horses losing by 40 lengths in every race. They ease their horses when all possibility of hitting the board is lost. They should simply have said thank you Kent for overcoming the 20 post in the derby and then not getting lured into a duel in the preakness...
You only pull a horse up if you know he's injured, as long as he's ok, you run out. However, we're talking about Desormeaux who blew the Triple Crown on Real Quiet in 98 and had, at that time, problems with the maturation process.

desourmaux had a drinking problem and I think he might have been drunk the day of the race. If you watch the video everyone knows that big brown was a tremendously fast out the gate when da tara broke and cut over desourmaux ran right up on da tara. He should have guided his horse to the outside of da tara. I think when the 2 horses hit heels that it must have bruised big browns foot. desourmaux might have been intoxicated as he ran through incredible slow fractions for this field 1.13 for 6 furlongs which even for a mile and a half is dead slow . Then desourmaux pulls his horse up. You dont ride a horse all over the track and then pull up off a slow pace . Its a funny thing that one year later Kent Desourmaux comes back and upsets the field on a long shot Summer Bird....I hope that cheating wasnt involved but I just get the feeling with 12 million dollars on big brown and Desourmaux winning the next year that some deal wasnt struck to take the publics money. Just like the casino a normal bettor has little chance in this world
