I love how the first thing every Ib student does is cover their screen or eyes and then zoom in, lol. Jokes aside, I'm an upcoming IB student and already have tons of stress lol
Had my results last week and it was 38 too which is so much better than what I expected! Props to this video cause I always watch it when I feel lazy to study😂 Goodluck to any IB student watching this! YOU CAN DO ITT
Hey, I’m a incoming first year IB student. I’ve been wondering about which IB science to pick in. I’m stuck between Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. I’m studying economics in university, and from what I’ve heard is that math is a crucial component. I’m not that good with mathematics because I haven’t been doing much since middle school due to transferring to many schools. So I’m a bit rusty. I thought of the options; 1. English Literature A SL 2. Mandarin B HL 3. Economics HL 4. Business Management HL 5. Biology/Chemistry 6. Mathematics AA SL Option 2; 1. English Literature A 2. Mandarin B SL 3. Economics HL 4. Business Management HL 5. Physics SL 6. Mathematics HL ( IA ) Which one do you prefer? My goal is to score a 36 in the end. I would say that I’m currently sitting at the threshold of 15-18, and after solidifying my foundations to increase into 27-34.
hi! i think that your choice of ib science shouldn't only be based on whether or not you're good at math, but how you study the best. i would say that biology is a better pick if you are good at memorizing a ton of info, but chem or physics will be better if you can problem solve. in my opinion, if you are planning to do econs in uni, i think you can maybe forego physics as it's incredibly difficult haha! i think that the math in chem sl is not too bad, but i personally found it a bit abstract when i was in hl chem, so i dropped to sl. however, this may not be the case for you, so the choice is entirely up to you! wishing you the best of luck in the ib :)
Hi Larry. I am an IB student who is starting senior year, predicted around 40/45, so I am able to provide some recommendations for your course choice. As a Chinese native who is bilingual in Chinese and English, my subject choices are: Business Management HL Math Applications and Interpretations (AI) HL English B HL Mandarin A SL Chemistry SL Geography SL I am applying to the UK, US and Australia planning to major in Management (UK), Economics (US) and Law/Economics (Australia) The schools I am applying to are: UCL, LSE, KCL, Leeds, Sheffield (UK), Cornell, NYU, Washington, UCalifornia, Illinois, Wisconsin(US) and Melbourne, UNSW and Monash (AUS). Please note that these are only my personal recommendations so your final decisions should be made after thorough consultations with your school teachers/advisers and your personal research online across some universities that you may potentially end up in: First, let me provide you with some general views on the difficulties of the course you choose: English literature A SL - I won't comment on this as you are choosing this course for both options. Mandarin B SL (option 1) or Mandarin B HL (option 2) - As a Chinese native, I can definitely relate on the difficulties of learning Chinese if it is your second or third language especially if you aren't someone from a Chinese - speaking background (e.g. Chinese American, Chinese Canadians). There is quite a bit of difference between Mandarin B SL and Mandarin B HL but the difference not huge. Thus, I would recommend you to gauge your mandarin skills based on the grades you've received in this course prior to IB (if you did it before for GCSE/IGCSE...) and your skills and confidence for this language. Economics HL and Business HL : you choose these for both options Biology/Chemistry SL or Physics SL - Sciences in the SL level are actually more much easier than that in HL, especially for biology and chemistry. I took chemistry SL because my initial course choice couldn't work out due to timetable errors (my choice was computer science SL) but it wasn't a tough course overall. No matter you choose bio, chem or physics SL, I don't think it will make a large difference to your grades unless you are very "genius" or inclined towards one of these sciences. If you aren't inclined towards any one of these subjects and just want high grades, I would say biology SL would be the best as you mostly have to memorise concepts and facts to score well in the exam. Physics, on the other hand, requires less memorisation and is more math and formulae - based. If you are good at math and hates rote learning , physics SL can also guarantee you a high score if you put a little efforts. Chemistry, although not difficult at an SL level, requires both conceptual understanding (through memorisations) and a lot of equations - writing. It requires quite a bit of efforts but once you grasped the concepts, it would be a piece of cake as all the complicated diagrammatic stuff (pure chemistry, chemical structures) only exist in HL which is usually taken by students who want to apply for medical school. Thus, the rule of thumb for you to decide on your science is: 1. Ask yourself: Am I very talented at either one of biology, physics or chemistry. If so, make your choice. If your answer to question 1 is NO or NOT SO SURE:), proceed to question 2. 2. Ask yourself: Am I strong at math (just basic and mediocre math)? If yes: pick Physics, if not: eliminate physics. If you eliminated physics, you need to choose between chemistry and biology. 3. Ask yourself: Do I enjoy writing chemical equations, chemical reactions or more memorisations? Am I more passionate about the natural world (living things) or chemical substances/reactions? Choose between chemistry and biology. MATH SL AA or MATH HL AI: THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT! Of course, whether you chose math SL or math HL would be influenced by your choice for mandarin B! Correct? I recommend you to decide on the math course first and let the rest be mandarin. (E.g. I decided Math HL, so I will do Mandarin B SL) because what math course you choose will be very important for your Economics major. In terms of difficulties, Math AI HL is slightly more difficult because it has more topics than AA SL. AL HI is statistics/probability based but also covers topics like trigonometry and calculus covered in AA SL. Both courses are easy compared to AA HL and are less twisted than AA HL, meaning that you can score very high grades if you pay attention and work hard (requires less aptitude/born - talent in math). Which course you choose will really depends on which country you are applying to study economics: US: If you are going to the US, it won't matter which course you choose as math HL is not crucial for economics. In this case, you may be better off with math AA SL so you can secure a high grade quite easily. But if you think you will put quite a large proportion of time on math, e.g. 30%+, trying AI HL wouldn't hurt. It won't be rocket science. UK: If you are going to the UK, I would highly recommend you doing math AI HL as quite many schools clearly state that students must choose either Math AI HL or Math AA HL in order to study econs. Canada and Australia: Both AA SL or AI HL would be fine. In case you are also wondering AI SL, it is very easy but DON'T CHOOSE IT. Even Canada and Australia could reject you because AI SL does not cover essential syllabuses making it only worthy for students doing stuff like arts, english, journalism, philosophy. Singapore: AI HL. Overall, both options won't hurt for you as a potential econs major. Since math is NOT SO IMPORTANT but still important for econs, I recommend you to take option 2. Even though you've mentioned that due to transfers and so you are bit weak at math, I don't think you will encounter problems if you just put efforts into AI HL. With confidence and diligence, getting a 7 for AA SL and AI HL would be equally easy. Cheers!
@@xuanyidu3259it. I’m a Canadian Chinese but not exposed to the language for close to 2 years, so I’m a bit rusty but ok in oral communications. Your right, I think it really doesn’t matter about which subject is harder in the science compartment in the standard level threshold. I’ll consider between the three again, I’ll probably choose physics lol. Also congratulations on completing the IB and doing enormously well over the span of two years. Thanks and have a good day.
@@sebastianblackfyre No problems! Alright, in this case I guess both mandarin courses would work out. Do take time to deliberate on math! If you are aiming for Canadian Unis like UoT Rotman, UBC and Mcgill, AA SL could be a great way to score 7 with less efforts since Canadian unis only hate AI SL for econs.
