With the sad news that Engineering Announcements would finish later in the month, here's the edition from 17th July 1990, preceded by a bit of C4 testcard. Some useful data on testcard frequencies, and Winter Hill continues on reduced power.
The music at 1'06" is 'Eurolight' by Chris Evans-Ironside

Its a shame, isn't it, that the Broadcasting Act swept ITV off its feet, made the BBC feel vulnerable to follow downmarket and took away the careful, quiet practices like these Broadcast Engineering Announcements. As the presenters mention, the IBA itself would soon be gone and eventually - though it took some time - what was left was either bought over, closed down or farmed out to independents. Not that all of this is bad of course, its grateful to look at these little time capsules. Quite comforting in a way and interesting to note the name Mike Brown, I immediately thought of the website mb21, and the BSB testcards.

I always felt the IBA was rather paternalistic in its approach. But looking back there was a comfort in it.

Vertical polarization doesn't have ground reflections, so the signal won't travel as far. By limiting propagation, they can allocate the frequency without causing interference to other stations. They should have answered it technically. It's an issue of you want a limited service, or no service at all?

My friend and I used to sit together and watch the transmitter announcements on channel 4 at about 9.15 am on a Tuesday morning.

If I were back at this point of time and if I were anywhere in the United Kingdom, my wish is for the IBA not to sacrifice itself or die to bring up the TRANSCOM infomercial. I would be crying to myself that I really don't want the Independent Broadcasting Authority to go, but at the end of July, the entire "organisation" along with the _Engineering Announcements_ "programme" already went bye-bye, and there's nothing much we can do about it now! Waaaa-haa-haaaa!!! 😢

How did you get such a good quality transfer? There is no jitter and the text looks perfect. Were these digitally cleaned up?

"Stereo radio on medium wave" - was it ever trialled in the UK? I know other countries had AM Stereo.

One ILR station did trial AM Stereo on 1170 kHz MW, and that was Radio Orwell Ipswich, but nothing came of it which is a shame, because it would have given MW a boost and provided something extra for the listener.

ITV... another thing Margaret Thatcher ruined. It's sad seeing them talk about the end of the IBA in this video.

Well that's all because the wicked headmistress forgot that we live in a Democracy where you're allowed to report true, factual news & current affairs (This Week, Thames TV), no matter how it might affect the Government.

tv68 The main difference is that Granada’s tune was a bit faster than IBA.

UK TV Transmitters should never been privatised, since that happened UK transmitter technology is way behind like USA and Europe as some contries are testing 4K transmissions UK won't have this as it being forced to view 4K tv via internet, i feel this is completely wrong decision to do that then now we have maybe 10 years of terrestrial TV and radio left

5.45 am? What a stupid time to have it on at.

Not Really, Channel 4 started Breakfast television in April 1989 with the Channel Four Daily at 6am and schools programmes moved from ITV to Channel Four in September 1987 at 9:25am, So Channel Four schedule would have been full to continue to show Engineering Announcement at 8:10am on a Tuesday, I remember the IBA making the Announcement during the School Easter Holiday when I was a child living at Home with family that Engineering Announcement was moving to an Eariler time of 5:45am.

"The use of vertical polarisation from a site where pixed polarisation is already estasblished as the norm seems spectacularly perverse to say the least." I agree.

I can't say officially as I don't know, but as the transmission side of the IBA was privatised effectively the engineering announcements if continued would be a commercial programme even though it was a programme about transmission news. Plus would a private company pay C4 money to show a programme like this at 5.45am with no advertising revenue in return? I think not. Plus surely a lot of people would have been checking teletext at this point for regular updates.
