Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer vs Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive - Battle of the Screamers

They are 2 of the most used pedals of the last 40 years, so are they the same, or different? The Ibanez Tube Screamer series is an institution in guitar playing as is the giant that is Boss. If you are looking to buy one and can't decide or you're just interested, I hope that you will find this video informative. All excerpts played using a Fender 68 Deluxe Reverb RI. I used my Deluxe Stratocaster for Rounds 1 & 2 and my Cort M600 for Round 3.
FYI, the Boss knobs on the TS9 don't affect the tone. I checked...... online!

They both suck compared to the 808! Nobody ever used the 9! From Gary Richrath to Stevie Ray used the 808! I know they and even Stevie said he used the Ts9! But that was taking out of context as he had to use it once!

@@jamesjewkiller1630 Wrong. They're practically identical. Watch the Video on Brian Wampler's channel. Great explanation. Also Stevie Ray used the TS model that was available at the time. Having owned several overdrive and distortion pedals and a couple modified Marshall heads prior to my first Tube Screamer, I remember the sustain and smooth gain that made the leads cut thru. That was my initial impression and it became my main pedal for many years. Over the last 25 years amps have evolved in so many ways and it is now time to factor the Tube Screamer back in.
@al271987
@al271987 4 года назад
History lesson: the Ibanez Tube Screamer was made as a direct competitor to the Boss OD-1 and is a fairly close clone of that circuit, but with symmetrical clipping (Boss had a patent on asymmetrical clipping at the time) and a tone knob. It proved to be so popular that Boss added a tone knob to the OD-1 circuit and called it the Super Overdrive, which is the SD-1 we all know today. Both the SD-1 and the TS share a lineage of essentially being modifications to the design of the original Boss OD-1. Personally, I’m a big fan of the SD-1, both by itself and stacking. Also, loads of pros have used and continue to use the SD-1 too (Johnny Greenwood, Mike Ness, John 5, Kirk Hammet, EVH), but none were as totally linked to the pedal as SRV was to the TS, so between the SRV connection and the cooler name, the TS will always win the popularity contests. I’m firmly in camp SD-1 though. It’s way too good of a pedal for just $50, everyone should have one.

There just aren’t many pedals left on the market that can open up the tonal options of your rig like it can for $50 anymore. There are some subtle differences but I’d have to get a deal on a used TS-9 to add it to my collection.

Great Video. I have learned that every amp, guitar, and pedal colors and changes the sound/tone and volume. There is no greatest but I will say, once we are hooked on a sound or tone that's what we go with. I have so many 60's tube amp's pedals that were not really needed for me that much. However; I am beginning to get into the pedal thing and now there are hundreds of makers and thousands of pedals so what a world for any guitarist to be living. It's tone heaven in the 21st Century.

that has sense to me.. it is more instersting to play the ts9 with single coild because of its scooped sound and it cuts the high frecuencies of single coil pickup. Fantastic comparison. Much depends on the amplification you use for the pedal. TS9 was fantastic with an old Marshall JMP 50 head w/el34s, but nowhere near as effective with Mesa 6l6 clean channel amp with lots headroom and low end. It was frustrating, until my band's other guitar player let me borrow his SD-1. Put them both on the board and the SD-1 was just better in every way with that amp. Yes, the Boss ads a more gritty character to the signal no matter where the drive is set (which is good sometimes), but it also eliminates the sometimes annoying low end when you stomp on it without having to mess with the amp's eq. That low end sounds great by itself but also can get you lost in a band mix, which is a reason why Marshall-sounding amps are so good in band settings; they cut through the mix.

Great video and comparison. Only suggestion, and I would say this for any "comparison type" analysis would be to use some sort of loop track and then A/B switch between the two. I think this could maybe yield a more controlled evaluation for dynamics and such. Just my opinion. I own both, have bought and own many OD's and even built a few of my own creations. I can tell you that there are very few differences between the two pedals circuit wise but the subtle differences are pretty much what most people seem to hear in the sonic results. Mainly the clipping stage. SD-1 uses 3 diodes in an asymmetrical configuration and the TS-9 (and variants) use 2 diodes in symmetrical config. However, the TS-__ has a small value "smoothing cap" in parallel with the diodes which seems to result in chopping off some of the ultra high nasties. quoting from Electrosmash.com analysis: 1.4.4 Low Pass Filter in the Feedback Loop. The small 51pF C4 capacitor across the diodes works as a low pass filter, softening the corners of the clipped waveform and mellowing out the high end of the distortion. My guess is that Boss may have chose to use 3 diode asymmetrical over the 2 diode version of Ibanez to get a similar result while avoiding patent infringement??? I dunno, just a hunch. I use them both along with the OD-3 (great underrated OD) and BD-2. Mix and match according to song / gig. But yeah, TS-___ and SD-1 are sorta like cousins from opposing sides of the railroad tracks.

@@JasonAyalaSpare I have one or two and always have it along with a bunch of other disaster gear in my "back-up bag". I forgot to mention in my original reply that I have 2 SD-1's and both are black label MIJ versions and I also have 3 MIJ DS-1's of the latter one is a silver screw s/n 300. I can tell you (and Brian Wampler even did a video on this I think) that even with the same pedals built with the same exact components etc., there can be variances in how they sound simply from the +/- tolerances of components. My SD-1's sound slightly different from each other as do the DS-1's but after playing any of them for a few minutes and making some tweaks I can get what I need from any of them. Additionally, I've had newer off the shelf versions of these pedals and while they too sound different, it's not enough to where I can't tweak them into the sweet spot. FWIW, I live not far from Andy Timmons and Tommy Katona. I've seen these guys many times and have talked shop with them. Andy used stock TS-9's for the longest time in front of his Laney's and Marshall's. Same with Tommy. Always has (even now) a TS-___ on his board. Ok, totally random and OT but I purchased an MXR Custom Badass Overdrive (the gold brick pedal) on a whim for next to nothing and have to say it really surprised me. I don't really use it that much but at the same time I can't bring myself to sell it. For as cheap as they are I would recommend anyone with some spare change to pick one up used and check it out. They definitely hit on something good with that one.

I'd have to say that the SD-1 is my fave too, been using it for over 2 decades! I found that I really liked the touch sensitivity on it more than the TS-9. Lots of sustain as well. So versatile and it came in handy for dialing up distorted tones in small clubs where the owners were constantly bitching about volume. They do sound pretty close in this vid but I've never owned an Ibanez, played the Boss and never looked back!

The real test is to compare the 2 pedals on different amps, with different level of gain. I have both of them, and I have played them for years in front of Vox, Marshall, Orange, Fender. Few examples? Try the SD1 on a JCM 800 with an humbucker and you will find "the hard rock sound". Ts9 on the Fender with a Strat as well, is really "recognizable".

I have a Boss Overdrive Distortion OS2 , not sure how different is from the SD1 but it does not function with earphones from the output while the TS9 does, but a Boss GE7 EQ pedal will also function independently, or in in combination with the TS9 and earphones ? , .

I never use any kind of overdrive pedal through a clean amp. I love the drive tone of my amp. So I prefer using my SD-1 as a solo boost. Much like what you say here only you used a distortion pedal for your dirty tone. I also have a TS-9 and used it as a boost for years and think it sounds great. But once I tried the SD-1, I liked it just a bit more. But I always ha e the Drive all the way down and the Level maxed. Cool comparison video!

I have both, I think that each have their own use, TS-9 is smother, conmfy gain and it feel warm. SD-1 have more voume, more power, feel almost like a distortion. I think that TS-9 is ideal for solos with feeling or give some smoth sensation to rhytmics, SD-1 is more for fast and agresive rhytmics or for powerfull and fast solos. Nice vídeo :)

Is it good to have both? I switch between blues and heavy metal a lot. I have TS9 clone.
@mr.banana4893
@mr.banana4893 5 лет назад
@@ermonski , I have both for the exact same reason. I switch between blues/classic rock and metal alot. Having both enables me to effectively toggle between those three styles. The SD-1 filters out muddy lows and boosts high mids, narrowing your sound a bit. This makes for a very tight fast tracking tone that's not wooly sounding, especially when cranking up the tone to around three o'clock position. Tube screamer style almost feels like it's opposite. Boosting low mids and sizzle, compressing alot more. Great for blues especially on single coil or P90. Another good way to use both is to set SD-1 for tight clear rhythm tone, then layering the TS for a smooth saturated lead tone. Much like the video.

I had the tube screamer and my friend had the sd-1 and we would switch all the time. Even tho in this video they sound probably much identical, they feel completely different. The tube screamer did feel chewy and the sd-1 did feel nice, it feels more sloppy and growly in a good way. I now have the sudden urge to get an sd-1

Love the 80's style vid. I'm just a novice guitar player, and not sure if I have got this right, but holy cow, so that's ironic then that the Ibanez Tube Screamer is better on it's own (i.e on a clean amp), as opposed to being used with gain on the amp (which is actually the correct way to use an overdrive). So, dare I say the Boss SD-1 got it more right then, as this pedal works better with gain on the amp! Great video, thanks.

I will choose sd1. Because its more clarity when we combine with the other stompbox, and for other reason i can choose the tube scream when it combine with some effect stompbox.. Its up to you guys.. Anything is about the perception of ours... We can make it smooth, we can make it clarity by combine with the other stompbox.. Thanks. :) (like my comment if u agree)

I was a kid in the 80’s, back then it seemed in you played a Fender amp the Tubescreamers mid hump made up for the mid scooped character of the Fender amp. If you played a Marshall amp, the SD-1 added some gain and bite and was the perfect combo because it didn’t clutter the already mid heavy tone of the Marshall amp.
@regortex3364
@regortex3364 4 года назад
SuperSpecialWorld -yes I would, Vox are also a strong midrange amp. I owned a Vox V-15 years ago and it was a dark heavy midrange tone, I’d probably try a “treble boost” pedal on one like Rory Gallagher did, or Brian May does.

I get that, but my experience has been the opposite. TS9 for el34 amps, SD1 for 6l6 amps. Both pedals have a mid bump, but like the end of the post indicates, the SD1 cuts out a big chunk of bottom end, and that is pretty much what I hear when I've tried them both.

SD1 as soon as you modify it with an easy operation, you can get a very nice flexible overdrive, getting more bass and loosing the hiss. without the mod it's still nice and cheap but with flat expression. TS9 is more compressed and mid centered, and then the best use is as a mid boost to add gorgeous richness on your overdriven tone. I use SD1 by itself to get a standard versatile strong creamy OD sound on fenders, and I use the TS to add crisp and juice to solos , nice on any guitar, best on LP!
