I came to the channel cause I bought my daughter the same guitar at a yard sale & wanted to know more about. I have no idea about guitars. Thanks bud. 🙏🏼
This is a really interesting one! I've never seen anyone mess with the sound hole. Can't wait to hear what she sounds like! Nice job playing those light gauge strings! Rock on brother!
I'm real interested where the braces are. Going that large it seems like you will have to be getting into the bracing. This is going to be so cool. You put the best videos on RU-vid... I never even heard of this.
Tony Rice I believe started it when he got so popular with the old Martin he bought from Clarence White. Noone seems to know if Clarence enlarged the sound hole or who did it but it stuck and a lot of people are now having it done. It's not good for all guitars as far as sound goes.
I was thinking about Tony Rice Clarence White old Martin Guitar . Martin Guitar has a bassy sound to them . Taylor Guitar has more high end. I had a Taylor Dan Crary Model Taylor 910 ce sadly I had to sell them to pay the rent.
I'd never thought about it being on RU-vid until I did a search the other day and shocked I couldn't find jack! lol This will be a first on RU-vid as far as I know. Thanks for watching brother and have a rockin weekend!
Me too! I'm going to string it back up with the same strings, so the only thing different will be the enlarged hole. (for now) This guitar is going to get a bunch of mods in time. Thanks for tuning in brother!
I'm surprised it's not already on RU-vid, I see a lot of acoustics with a larger than normal hole, Martin and a few others build a few with larger than normal sound holes but for as many guitars as I see I really thought there would be more info on here about it. Soon there will be!
@@RandySchartiger yeah of course, I have that type of guitar and I really love it I got it when I was 8, and I'm 18 now, I'm proud of its it great shape but my sister got ahold of it and she ripped of the pick guard, and I can't find one now I've tried everywhere, can you tell me anything?
I'm an idiot! I thought all dreadnought bodies had the same size sound-holes. Then I compared my Martin D15 to my Yamaha FG720 and the Martin sound-hole was substantially smaller. Have fun with the project!
Yep the different size hole makes a lot of difference in tone and overall sound. Martin even makes models now days with really big sound holes. Thanks for tuning in! Enlargement coming soon! :)
I play .013-.056 gauge and haven't checked these yet but I'd bet they are .010 or maybe .011, like playing on spaghetti lol Thanks for watching brother!
Randy Schartiger when I 1st started thats 1st thing I came across is acoustics having heavier gauge strings. Though when I worked in that music store I routinely saw people making all kinds of noob mistakes with strings , a lot of which were really cringeworthy.
CJ99 hahaha yep, I've seen people do that too, they don't usually realize that when a guitar is built (especially acoustics) it's built to play and sound best with a certain gauge string, anything heavier chances pulling it apart, I've cringed when I saw some really nice guitars pulled apart from this.
Hi Cristina! Yeah everyone that saw other guitars I did couldn't believe just how I did it, next video on this guitar will reveal my secret, I checked and couldn't find any other on RU-vid so it'll be a first! :) Thank you for viewing, wishing you a wonderful weekend!
I've seen that style nut before but can't remember what brand of guitar. I assume it was an Ibanez. I have a bad case of CRS. Neat project, looking forward to hearing the difference.
These nuts much be more common than I thought on acoustic guitars, I've seen them on several different brands of electric guitars identical, tho I have CRS too and didn't take note of any of the names at the time. Thanks for having a look Jerry!
Very cool! My son and me have a pretty wide variety of music we play. Thanks for tuning in Dirk, we will be doing more videos eventually together so stay tuned. :)
It's an entry level acoustic of the ibanez "jam pack" series. I'm guessing solid spruce top, laminate mohogany back. Supposedly one of their better entry level guitars. Can't wait to see what u can get out of it!
Well this should be an interesting project! Keep us informed cause I'm looking forward to this one Randy. Thanks for posting and you really shouldn't be so quick to be killin them poor little knats! Try to reason with em about going back outside and if they don't show any signs of paying attention? ;) ...............( I have no idea what got into me tonight) Have a good one brother man.
We just got put under an extreme heat advisory thru tomorrow evening, glad I got the AC serviced it's helping me keep on the cool side lol Thanks for tuning in Dan, this will be an interesting video to come!
Yesterday when I made this video it was 89 here and that was like a cold front after what we been having, today right now it's 96 and feels like a lot more than that. I can say I've been slaving over a hot guitar all day lol
I am so looking forward to watching that, Randy. It will be the first time I see someone enlarging the sound hole in a guitar,,,, how are you going to manage the area where the fretboard meets the sound hole? So looking forward!
I was surprised to find nothing when I did a search on RU-vid for sound hole enlargement, it appears my video will be the first of it's kind! The owner wants the fretboard to extend beyond the edges of the hole, like Tony Rice's old Martin, I think his Santa Cruz is like that too. Many thanks Cesar for viewing and commenting!
This guy is expecting miracles, but he better be happy with your work, don't understand what he's expecting from chiponese stuff??? Oh well you always improve anything you touch that's for sure:)
Thank you my friend! Yeah I think he just wants it to look like Tony's guitars only, it would take some heavy modifications to make it sound like Tony's probably more like impossible, but appearance wise we should be able to get there. Thanks for viewing! :)
They are a good little guitar for the money. It plays really well and doesn't sound bad, I'm anxious to hear how the larger hole sounds! Cheers my friend and thanks for tuning in!
lol I need to order new blades for one of my Coping saws but nope, lol I think when you see the video you'll be surprised ;) Thanks for watching Archie! Tell Edith hey from the house! :)
Kind of curious what the owner does not like about the sound. Seems OK to me, sort of what you expect from a dreadnought. Still it will be interesting to see how you enlarge the sound hole
He is more concerned with the appearance than the sound, he wants to make it look like Tony Rice's guitar, enlarged hole, inlays removed and just a blank fretboard. It will be interesting to hear the difference tho. Thanks for watching Stephen.
Great project McRandy!!so a dremmel or a coping saw? Or a mini chain saw??just kidding well you will be the first!!!Cheere's brother I think you will need plenty of beere's . Say hi to theQQQQ!!!
haha I'm surprised noone has guessed it yet. Yep it seems my video will be the first of it's kind on RU-vid and that surprises me too because I see an awful lot of guitars with a bigger than normal sound hole. ! says HEY and thank you for watching brother! Cheers wit beers! Hold on! :)
wow... i am tuned in to see how this turns out. What about adding a hole to the side? I saw a guitar online with a sound hole in the side right about under your chin. Seems it would project more sound?
I've seen some new designs of guitars like that with the sound hole up where you said. Never played one myself (yet) I would love to check them out. Stay tuned larger sound holes coming down the pipe soon! :) Thanks for watching Jim!
I actually get several wanting the sound hole enlarged, I was shocked to find so little info about it online when I searched, it appears my video will be the first of it's kind. This isn't an expensive guitar but I have had some high dollar guitars come in here for the same thing. It doesn't work so well on all guitars tho and I don't recommend it. Thanks for tuning in mate!
That nut came from Ibanez. I have PF that had one and I put a bone nut on it. Did not make a huge difference. It will be interesting to see what you do to this guitar. Have you tried the Monel strings? Thankz
I'm anxious to hear what (if any) change in the sound it will have by enlarging the hole that big. Yes I tried Monel strings and love the sound right out of the package, and it only gets better as they stretch and break in. If you like booming bass and mellow rich tones you probably will like them. Thanks for watching my friend!
He may do it before it's all said and done. He has some other luthiers and techs going to take a stab at it, sure would be interesting to see and hear the guitar once all the mods are completed. Thanks for watching Mel!
Found this guitar by a dumpster I cleaned her all she really wasnt dirty just dusty. I meed to get new strings for this one and I'm just starting out to learn guitar. So I'm curious what are good strings to put one this specific guitar for a beginner learning cards at the moment.
these guitars aren't built to handle heavy strings, so I'd recommend light gauge strings, maybe .012 to .052, no heavier than that, any brand you like best but go with those gauges. good luck. and thanks for checking out my videos!
dude thank u. but i think me and everyone thinking about this one or the yamaha f310. what do recommend? i understand nothing about guitars and i am beginning my guitar journey with one of them two. so the yamaha or the ibanez?
yeah, taping boxes together is never really a good idea. If you pack it like you don't care about what's in it, they treat it that way. sad but true...
That is VERY true! Something I picked up on a while back is, if you really want them to handle it gently, right on the box "contains lithium batteries" and they will handle it like gold! lol Try it, the box will arrive in the same condition as when it was shipped every time! :)
So I'm guessing that's a Guild copy judging from the headstock and pickguard. Ibanez was real big into copying everyone else until they got big into electrics with hand holds cut into them. What type of sound change is your client hoping for? You might have said but I had to watch this vid in two parts and I suffer from that same syndrome CRS, but I call CRC, can't remember crap.
I didn't notice that until reading your comment but yes it sure does look a lot like a Guild! CRC lol! The owner I don't think is concerned about the sound as much as he is the appearance of the guitar, he wants it to look very much like Tony Rice's guitar with the sound hole enlarged and no inlays. Myself I am curious how it will change the sound. I've already enlarged the hole but haven't strung it up and tried it yet. Video on that coming soon too. Thanks for tuning in Dane, stay tuned to hear the change! :)
hahaha Thanks mate! I'm so far out of practice right now I can barely play, but stay tuned I plan to get back into practice again. Thanks for tuning in brother!
Either you work really cheap or this guys just planning to throw a fair amount of money at a $99 guitar... I'd think that you could do a lot more with a solid wood instrument but that's just me.
I used to work pretty cheap up until a few years ago when I saw what people were getting fret jobs done for and how bad the work was and how much they paid. I don't work so cheap anymore, in fact it's quite expensive on most jobs. Not sure what the owners intentions are but as long as he wants to pay I'll do what ever he wants to the guitar. I with you, I would put this kind of money into this guitar myself either.
