There is plenty of hype around gravel bikes right now. I’m taking 3 top models and comparing them across the same route in both 700c and 650b setups. This is my first video on my new channel, hope you enjoy!
For reference, here are my stats:
Height: 5'10"
Inseam: 30"
Saddle Height: 71cm
Weight: 180lb
FTP: 345

You should continue making reviews. These are great! Love that you’re based in SF too. Helps understand more about the local terrain

Alex, I appreciate your time to do these comparisons. I am in the process of figuring out which bike to buy go n-1 and replace my road bike and cross bike. Having your input, is great, as so many others seem to be marketing videos at the time of a product release. I will dig into your site further, but currently I am also looking at the Look 765 Gravel and the Parlee Chebacco.... Not to mention the Colnago, Allied and the new Factor

Thanks for the comment Daniel! I do think that many of the new "gravel" bikes dan easily double as a road bike. In fact, a good friend of mine purchased this Hakka and an additional set of light bicycle wheels to perform double duty. The things I would look out for are: geometry (you want to make sure it's not too upright), tire clearance (depending on your terrain, I'd make sure it's at least 700x42 and ideally 650x2.1), and weight (the Allied Able is quite heavy). The Aspero is great for this purpose, I also really enjoy riding the diverge, and lastly the new Exploro could be interesting with the right tires to soften the ride.

Enjoyed the video and looking forward to the rest as this is super relevant to my next bike purchase. Would be interested to include the Open U.P and Pivot Vault into the mix!

Thanks Nathan! The 3T Exploro has very similar geometry to the Open, and the Ibis has been called a “copy”. That being said, would definitely like to get my hands on one to test. With a reach of 376 on the medium, it’s a pretty short reach. I was running a 120mm stem on the Exploro and felt that I was too far forward. The Pivot does seem cool! I’ll see if I can get my hands on one :)

I appreciate you starting this channel and hope you keep it moving forward. Unfortunately most of the reviews out there are too commercialized with big dollars behind them. It’s hard to tell what’s genuine and you hardly ever get honest opinions. Maybe in 2019 my attention span is too short, but I had a difficult time staying focused and kept skipping forward to get to the actual meat and potatoes of the review. Maybe cut out some of the less important details and avoid going too far down the rabbit hole on other details. Also more views of the bikes, detailed views of all the lines of the bikes while you’re talking in the background. Please, keep this going, I’m looking forward to more.

Mr Mojo Risin great feedback, thanks! I'm working on the Stigmata one right now and will have it up in a couple days.

Ive seen hakkas with dropped seat stays, usually 53cm. Is that a new design?
@samuraioodon

I noticed the Hakka has 31.6 seat post? Is it noticably stiffer and compromise comfort? I wonder why ibis decided to do this size. Thank you

Is the hakka harsh on gnarlier stuff? I watched a review and it says it's too stiff and too harsh on gnarlier terrain.. does that hold true? I believe the reviewer was using 700x40.. thank you!

Great review. And thanks for your honest opinions! I do have one question: I own a specialized Roubaix (with future shock). So I have a road bike. I am torn between getting a gravel bike with 700c vs 650b. Do you have any preference for gravel riding? If you had to pick 1 size, what would you go with? Again, thanks for all your reviews!

Hey Mark, sorry for the delay as I was traveling. What type of trails do you have near your house? I find myself using 700c for rides that have long road sections or are mainly fire roads and swap to 650b for the more technical days. It also depends on the frame. If your bike can only accept 650x48 for example (like the Aspero) I would say just stick with 700x42. The 700c wheels are definitely faster, but the 650b wheels spin up quicker so you should also think about your gearing.

Thanks Alex for the review ! I am currently looking for a gravel bike and tried few bikes recently: Ibis Hakka, Cervelo and Diverge and trying to make my mind. Diverge for sure felt the most comfortable, but I am still not 100% convinced. I am planning to do bit of bike packing too and heard Cervelo is mostly racing bike and might be not the best fit for that ?

Aleksandra Sienkiewicz hey! From a "marketing" standpoint, the Cervelo isn't designed to carry cargo. That being said, you can always get velcro strapped bags. I would focus on the comfort aspect since you'll be spending a lot of time in the saddle. If you aren't going through very rocky /technical terrain the diverge is great. Only downside is a low bottom bracket which could cause pedals strikes if you're going over rocks.

What kind of power meter do you have on the Ibis?
@BillerBikeReviews

Hey! I use the Sram Red Quarq AXS power meter. If you forward to 11min I go over the bike build.

Thinking about doing the Best of Both in Bend. This is a 85 mile total race with 62 mile road miles and 23 single track. What are your thoughts on the best bike for both.
@BillerBikeReviews
@BillerBikeReviews 4 года назад
Hey Anna, that looks like a cool ride! Love Bend. Depending on how technical the single track sections get I would say the Ibis or Stigmata would work well. Maybe you can rent one from a local shop? Tire choice will be the biggest thing - maybe some Schwalbe G One or Specialized Pathfinder.

Thnx for the vid. I'm considering the Stigmata and the Hakka myself. I'm 5'11" so I guess a 55 is right..? Would like to know how you rate the build quality and the attractiveness. Is SC more sought after? 👍👍
@BillerBikeReviews
@BillerBikeReviews 5 лет назад
Hey Martin! If you're 5'11" I would definitely go with a 56cm Stigmata. The 54cm is just on the edge of being too small for me. The 55 Hakka would work well. Both frames are made in China so quality seems similar. I'd say the matte finish on the SC is harder to clean than the glossy Ibis, but that changes if you get the black color.

Check out Clint Gibbs bike reviews. I’m not telling you to copy his style, but his camera angle is constantly changing to keep you engaged. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_J_ZZ0dJCxg.html

when you say, the cerúleo is the best of all 3 bikes. what did you mean?
@BillerBikeReviews
@BillerBikeReviews 4 года назад
Hey Carlo, I wouldn't say any one bike is "best". If you already have a road bike, I would consider the Stigmata or Ibis depending on your geometry needs since they can handle 2.1" tires. If you don't have a road bike, the Cervelo is a good one-bike quiver.

Dude this is a video not an interview. Don't you watch other bike reviews? This was long and boring; Nothing but opinion; The most ridiculous bike review. Did I say nauseating? Nothing personal, you can only improve.

Super Strada thanks for the feedback! I would argue that all reviews are opinions of the product. Will do my best to shorten up the next one!

Super strada, you are nuts (in addition to being rude and obnoxious). The best part of videos like this is hearing the opinions of people who own and ride the bikes. It's great info. I can read specs on the manufacturers web page or any magazine review.
