Except the Ripley @mtbyumyum is riding is 8-9k, this is not apples to apples as far as the target buyer. Enve wheels, XTR, etc no way that is a 3-4k bike. In this case this bike should have been reviewed stock because that's how most would buy it. The ride experience will not mirror what the stock bike will feel like with all that bling on YumYum's bike.

You keep saying 3k but your not riding the 3k bike, your talking about a 5k to 6k bike with those wheels you got along with all the other upgrades, you should consider riding the 3k build so you can tell your viewers how the actual 3k bike feels, just a thought.
@dirtbike9003
@dirtbike9003 3 года назад
Exactly, that’s a factory 34, not the grip 34 on the 3k build. There’s 2k in upgrades I’m betting. 33lbs is closer to accurate.
@patrickmoran8583
@patrickmoran8583 3 года назад
Agreed. After throwing on carbon wheels, bars, and a Factory fork, you are essentially riding a different bike. There is a difference between swapping out the saddle, grips, and pedals (touch points) vs upgrading the wheels, suspensions, brakes (performance.) This video is more of a review of the upgraded components than the bike itself.
@mtbyumyum

I hate to argue with you guys but cut me some slack... First, I'm not a big time RU-vidr that has the eye of attention from bike manufactures. They don't send me bikes to review and I'm not sponsored so I'm not in the "know". Second, be honest, have you ridden ENVE wheels and bars? They literally are wheels guys... they don't do anything different. The hub is a little better but honetly, I didn't once talk about the engagement of the hub. So, non-issue. Also, the Grip 2 damper in the factory fork isn't any better than the grip damper... has slightly more adjustability but honestly, no different. Several pro's actual prefer the grip damper in their forks. Again, fork.... non-issue. Now for the overall weight of the bike. This bike I tested weighed in at 29 lbs 6 oz. so a pound or so lighter... just remember, I borrowed the frame and took the wheels and bars off my Yeti SB130 and Salt Cycles threw a bunch of slx parts and xt brakes on there for me to test ride the bike... Doing the best I can with what I have...

@@mtbyumyum sorry if my reply came off a little harsh. I meant no disrespect. You mentioned several times in your video that you are impressed by this $3K bike. But you were not riding a $3K bike. That was my quibble. I love your channel! Keep doing what you do!

@@dirtbike9003 Yeah the wheels alone are 2.5k, I see a cassette on that bike that costs more than the whole drivetrain on the stock build. I know YumYum doesn't get bikes from Ibis so I get it. The bike shop should have tried to let him review the stock build because that is the bulk of how the bike will be sold.

I love Aluminum bikes. I've had zero complaints with my Ripmo AF. I would absolutely love a Ripley AF! Super stoked they came out with this bike. The only piece of kit I am picky about is my brakes and suspension. I will gladly save money by going aluminum over carbon on my frames and run good sus and brakes. I'm not that picky with drivetrain at all though. I feel like SLX works just as good as XT or XTR. Same with GX vs XX1.

I agree, Jason, that the Shimano SLX and Deore, especially if you want to conserve your $$$, are the best value around. Slight weight "penalties", but very nearly the same performance. That's a pretty cool bike but I really wish you had ridden it stock to see how a bike that actually cost $3,000 performs; the 'few little upgrades' include Enve bars ($170) & wheels ($2550), XTR cassette ($380) (& maybe shifter & derailleur too, I'm not sure),XT brakes ($420) and a Fox Factory fork ($909). The upgrades cost 50% more than the bike.

Personally, I think most people, about 90% who buy the more expensive stuff do it, because they think they need it based on reviews, and what the pros ride, and what media is stuffing in their face. I ride more budget deore group set, because it performs flawlessly, and yes it is a slight bit heavier than xtr, but if your not racing, and winning races, then really xtr or xx1 isn't needed. It will last just as long. When considering a new bike, the most important thing is a good frame that fits your riding style, and your body properly, and good suspension. Budget suspension not the way to save money, your ride will suffer

Hello! I’m thinking of buying a carbon Ripley, however I have heard rumors of an update maybe this spring for that frame. Because of this I have decided to wait a little. However, when I saw this Ripley AF I got a bit worried about the updates on the carbon Ripley. I am not interested in a slacker head angle on Carbon Ripley, it seems to be more or less perfect as it is. Should I wait for an update on the carbon Ripley or should I buy now? What do you think?

I don't think there is any way you would see a new "updated" Ripley this year.... not even a paint update... Ibis and the rest of the bike industry is waaaaayyyy behind on orders. Think about it. People have Ripleys on order today and wont see them till August... so if someone orders a current Ripley in say, March, it likely won't ship till September-October.... they need to first get caught up on orders. New paint likely next spring is my guess. Either way, the current carbon Ripley with a 140mm fork has perfect, PERFECT, geo for a 120mm sporty bike.... 66 hta 75.5 sta

Thanks for making this review happen, despite the difficulty in getting the bike and having to piece it together yourself with some non stock components, I found it extremely helpful! I owned a V3 Ripley for a couple of years and loved it! Sold it some months back, bought a longer travel enduro rig which was fun and awesome in it's own right, but way more bike than I need most of the time, so it's since been sold, too. My other bike is a carbon ht single speed, which is my daily driver, but I'm ready for a full suspension rig again and really prefer the feel of a short travel 29er :) On the waiting list for this Ripley AF now, I think it's gonna be a nice solution to having a more capable short travel trail bike that is still playful and climbs well...and keep it budget friendly. Kept my carbon wheels from my previous Ripley build, so bonus upgrade right there, haha!!

With the question on affordable bikes, I feel that reviewing bikes in the $2500 to $3500 range would be better since it is the price range of a large portion of mountain bikers look at. I will probably get the Ripley AF next Spring (Shooting for March). I know I do not have the money to go after the $5K and up bike. However, a comparison like the one in this video has value. In my mind knowing that the Aluminum Ripley is 90% of the $7K Carbon gives me that "warm/fuzzy" feeling that I am making the right choice.

I'm one of those guys who thinks prices are getting insane! I have a moral budget of $3K! This year I got a great deal on a V1 Ripmo Carbon NX build. I won it on a bid on Ebay for $3400 including tax. The shop was all the way in Maine and I'm located in NorCal. It was free shipping. The bike had been in storage so it was like new. I did eventually upgrade the groupset to SLX 4P brakes and a GX drivetrain which costed me about $600 more and think it was worth every penny. Not a fan of SRAM drivetrains but that was the best I could do with limited supplies due to Covid - the bike industry is capitalizing on Covid but it's causing a shortage of supplies. I'm very happy with my Ripmo. I do have a lot of love for the Ripley since it was my first Ibis bike, but prefer the extra support on the Ripmo. I buy a bike about every 5 years. The next one I buy I'll try to lower the budget to $2K. I notice some brands offer a lot with their base models and there are some great deals out there. We'll see 5 years from now.....LOL...

I’ve got a large carbon Ripley w/ the xt build and the carbon s35 wheels and fairly light Maxxis 2.4 tires. Mine weighs 28.6 lbs with pedals using the scale at my lbs. I’m hard pressed to figure out how I could get the bike below 27lbs with any kind of confidence inspiring rubber on it.

Pretty good compared with what you run on your own ripley, do you feel like the Af has more comfort on trail or stiff as the carbon? And do you think the performance of the frames are similar, the AF should Be more stabil on the downs with the 1degree slackness of HA. Cheers

Yeah, I would say the overall feel of the AF was more comfortable and smooth. More stable and composed with the slightly more aggressive geo. It's a very good do-everything trail bike!

I would enjoy reviews of less expensive bikes, comparing them to the more expensive. I've owned carbon and aluminum MTBs and to me the only real difference is weight. The larger tires, lower air pressure, and full suspension make the differences in frame materials much less important than in road or gravel bikes, I think.

Great review. So would putting a 140mm fork on the carbon Ripley give it more AF descending ability? Given a choice AF vs Carbon plus 140mm what would you chose? Irrespective of budget?

I prefer the 140mm fork on the ripley
@nikoyannaros48
@nikoyannaros48 3 года назад
Thanks for the numbers. Most important thing is the frame. Next shock and fork. This is the base. Everything else can be replaces, as you said. For example if it is worn or personal preference. A really good bike doesn't need to cost more than 5k. You can even find good bikes less than 3k. It doesn't need to be carbon and super fancy stuff on it. What for? It is not a show bike. It is an utility for usage that you crash. My friend's carbon nomad is lighter than my alu nomad. You can feel it when you lift the bike up. That's nice. But man, I ride mostly in the bikepark and use a lift. For me the best thing is always to build the bike up by myself. Every each part is my personal preference, then. From the beginning.

Hi! Thanks for the review! Would you tell that this particular Ripley is as capable as SC Tallboy? I know that Ibis clims better, but carbon version was (as per various reviews) kinda less stable than Santa Cruz in terms of going downhill. I also understand that those expensive upgrades (grip2 fox, enve and other things) still won't alter drastically the overall operation of the suspension and geo of the bike (the later is subject to use of the same travel numbers as was intended by the manufacturer).

I am considering building up a Ripley AF. I know you can run a 140mm fork. I have a 2018 YT Capra 29er. I wanted to put my Rockshox Zeb but run it at 150mm. I would put the latest Rockshox Super Deluxe Ultimate 190x45mm. Then put all my build from my bike to the Ripley. This would make it very burly and heavy, but I think it would be easier to pedal and climb then my enduro bike. I live in San Antonio and have no elevation to speak of. So in your opinion can I run a 150mm fork on it?

great review. bikes are too expensive, and people are rolling mad money beyond what's required, but if you got it its fine. I do still think it's funny when pros on the podiums ride $7k bikes and Joe Shmo's are on $12k of bike though, which is all too common these days. I'd like to see a Ripley AF mod options video, especially as it concerns boosting travel to 140mm with the Fox34 it comes with, or swapping out for a Fox 36, DVO or whatever. I think suspension mods are the thing most average riders consider when they don't have much dough to spend, but want to be sure how to spend it when they do. How does "overforking" a Ripley help or hurt the design? change the geometry? etc... Keep up the solid content!

Said something about the front end wondering on the climbs. I rented a ripley af and orbea occam (not lt version) and I found that I had to balance the front end more on the climbs compared to the occam. What causes this? I am new to MTB. Is it the slightly slacker geo of the ripley? By the way I am really considering both of these bikes for my one MTB. So anybody who has ridden these bikes long term, feel free to share your experience. I am actually considering the Lt option on the occam as well.

I tried MTB 2 years ago and just impulse bought a 160/150 travel Canyon Spectral (im still very happy with it) but feel really over biked for Illinois (not much for elevation changes but its 10-15 feet down and 15 feet climbs rinse and repeat (short punchy downs/climbs). I want something more efficient for singletrack but can still get rowdy if you want to jump and take it to wisconsin/michigan/trips to bentonville etc. The spur is interesting too but it's pushing the budget almost 2 times this bike with similar geometry (i feel like the 35mm stachion Rock shox Sid is a better setup). Anywho, how is this bike for jumping decent size jumps/gaps will it hold up I know you said it's a more softer ride in your other videos?

Unfortunately the only 2 carbon MTB things I have owned I have broke.... 190lbs but definitely a sender rider. Snapped handlebar and cracked frame...suffer from carbon anxiety and sucks to be riding and not doing a technical challenge because of fear of damaging your bike.

Hey there 👋 I value your opinion and experience and wanted to ask a quick question. My favorite trails are 1. Zen & Gooseberry and 2. Long climbs followed by steep descents up Little and Big cottonwood. I care more about uphill efficiency and techy capabilities than I do about hard downhill charging soak everything up. A bike that could be an all arounder but also help me clean tech and climb. I’m coming off a ‘16 stumpy. After watching your reviews and others, here is my top 3 in order. Is this what you’d recommend and any others I should consider? 1. Ibis Ripley AF (I can get an SLX build for $2,800 which seems like a killer deal) 2. Ibis Ripley carbon (I’ve wanted a lightweight carbon bike for a while) 3. Pivot Trail 429 Race 4. Ibis Ripmo (I’m not convinced I need that much travel) And I’m not interested in specialized, ready to try something new and different. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

I really don't think you need to spend much more. Of course I spent about 1K on each bike to kit it out the way I like it. But that was over time. So long travel YT for big trails.
