In this video I take you through my IBM 5160. I take it apart show you all the upgrades I did to it and I take it for a test drive with some classic early 80's IBM games in glorious CGA. #DOScember

Heh, still making my way through DOScember videos as I find more of them. And man, I really enjoyed this! Great idea with the Watson cocktail pairing. Very tasteful upgrades and updates to the XT too, I especially dig the hidden Gotek.

@LGR agreed, both the Watson cocktail pairing and the stealth GoTek drive are a nice touch for sure to this machine!

Thanks to #DOScember, I've found so many new retro tech channels! One who came up with the idea is pure genius.

I heard them say they thought LGR coined the name, but the other instigators have a nice intro video, where I learned of #DOScember, here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CkwZR0OKwUw.html

It’s a great idea. I’ve also found a lot of new channels this way. Reminds me of the old Webring navigation on fan pages where it linked to another fan page of the same topic.

@@JeremysRetroBar I now regret skipping #SepTandy... I just found my Radio Shack TV Scoreboard (a 1st generation home Pong game) in the crawlspace and am looking at modding it for composite. Happy hacking!

@@DrDavesDiversions Yeah I initially introduced DOScember as kind of a joke follow-up to SepTandy, but it quickly took on a life of its own!

@@LGR most of why I'm here is to interact with people in the retro community, currently, so both #DOScember and #MARCHintosh have been v. good. These celebrations can definitely help connect people. Cheers!

Personally, I thin there is nothing wrong with collecting, as preseving things will serve its purpose in time. but what is important to retro computing, is developping and maintaining a community of users. Luckily, we live in an era with alot of harware back-engineered where we can buy brand new 8 bit isa cards, for example. the fact we can today build a brand new 8088 xt from brand new parts is the most important development. That way, most of us can enjoy being actual users, and be protected from the unreasonable price inflations of the old (and failing) hardware.

I like this video Jeremy. It reminds me of my Dad's IBM PC XT. My computer was a Tandy 1000 TL/2. Too bad both have been recycled in 2000. I use PCEM and 86box to emulate them on my Core 2 Quad machine.

That actually looks like a pretty good port of Q*bert (maybe helped by the fact that Q*bert arcade hardware runs off an 8088 as well).

Clones usually had a couple of breakouts for mounting ports. XT hadn't even the hole for the external power supply...

I love your stealth GoTek drive in your hard drive bay. That's so slick with the magnets to hold the faceplate on. Have you considered swapping out the stock 8088 processor in your machine with a NEC V20? It's still an 8088 but with a little extra boost in speed and a few more CPU instructions to make things playa little nicer.
@JeremysRetroBar
@JeremysRetroBar 3 года назад
Thanks! I do like how it looks original from the front. I haven’t done that processor upgrade because I have another 8088 machine with the NEC V20. That way I can keep the 5160 in a stock configuration.
@geekwithsocialskills
@geekwithsocialskills 3 года назад
I get wanting to keep the machine in a stock configuration, however you've already sort of broken that rule ;-) but... the NEC V20 is an upgrade that was available BITD, so technically by adding it to your 5160 now in present day, you're staying true to the machine.

The original PC will always be special and valuable for obsviour reasons, but one that I absolutely like is the Zenith Data Systems Z150 series, which are PC xt clone. The very neat thing about them is that they have no motherboard, it just a 8bit ISA back-plane that reminds me of oldschool S-100 systems. The baseline system is 3 long boards, one of which is a CPU board, and can be switched between 4meg or 8meg speed. And alos, it may be a clone, but like the IBM, it is quality build... built like a tank.
