I had never known the BIOS could be configured from IBM Basic. It's far less obvious command-wise than configuring UEFI from it's command shell (or other hardware setup shells like OpenFirmware and Petitboot) but probably less typing (UEFI commands, especially device paths, can become quite involved).
How cool! I never knew there was an XT 286. Of course I knew of the AT, but not this! This really makes me want to get my 5160 up and running though ;)
It was the first IBM I picked up when I started retro collecting at the end of last year.... did not realise it is a pretty rare item. now proud owner of the entire IBM 5xx collection.
@@RetroSpector78 Nice!!! I was always a PC guy, and somehow I started collecting a bunch of retro Apple/Mac stuff. I have my aunt's old 5160 which isn't running :/ No display output or beeps or anything. It will get power and the hard drive spins up, but that's about it. It's on my list of projects. I actually kind of have my heart set on another PS/2 system at the moment. I have some of my stuff on my channel, but I really need to start documenting more of it. And I need to document it more properly instead of just spur-of-the-moment LOL
Hi, man. "And if you’re interested in seeing something specific let me know." I'm writing a PC emulator, and a little confused about behavior of NEC 765 in case of no drive attached. Can you please disconnect all drives from controller (the controller itself should stay in slot) and try to boot and press F1? I'm wondering will it hang or post some error / switch to BASIC. The BIOS waits an error after seek command, but according to schematics there will be no errors (controller just will never get TRK00 signal), so I think it should hang. Thank you.
Fascinating, my 5162 actually says "IBM Personal Computer XT/286" on the front plaque. Maybe your case cover got switched for an 5160's one earlier in its life?
a 'stealth' pc, to hide the upgrade to xt286 from the boss, and from thieves. i used an old, beat-up xt clone case for my desktop at work. a price sticker for $4.95 from goodwill was on the case. in it's last 'disguise', it housed an early pentium mobo, then-new & rocket-fast at the time. the boss would often say 'we've got to get you a newer, faster pc'. 'no thanks boss, let's be frugal. the old girl still has a few electrons left in her'. good times ... please take care & stay safe.
8:37 That "PGA chip" copyrighted in 1985 does not mean that the card was manufactured in 1985. As far as I can see, most ICs on that board were manufactured in mid 1988. So the card must be younger than that.
Well gosh. I had a similar XT-286 motherboard to test the summer last year. Never got any drives working on it, and then I had no more time to examine it. Had I known to start with that it could have been configured by BASIC just like that it would have been useful, but to know that there is actually an application made for that it'd been great. However, I think I might that find updated knowledge useful again when I'll just find some time to test my IBM AT motherboard... In case you know some nice persistent site from where that GSETUP_BASIC application can be downloaded, it could have been a nice one to have linked in the description. I found a copy of it myself by Google conjurations already, but regardless.
Okay, it works, but if you want full experience with old games, install an old sound card, too, for example: SoundBlaster. 🔊 And I don't know what's currently on the hard drive, but MS DOS would be the best, maybe with some memory upgrade, too. 😉
Well 2 problems with that :) 1. I did not have a floppy disk :) it was my first retro computer and I just started with this crazy hobby :) I wanted to get the hard drive up and running and boot from it. 2. This is Cassette Basic and does not support writing / reading from disks, only cassettes via the IBM cassette interface, something I have never seen in the wild.
