IC-7300 Portable Protection: Case/Rails/Screen Protector

I've been looking high and low for something solid to transport my IC-7300 in. I had been using the box and packing material the radio came in until one of my friends hit me with the obvious fact that I was only one bad brake check from an idiot away from my radio flying all over the back of my Jeep.
This video describes three good options for protecting your IC-7300 and other radios while doing POTA, transporting your rig while on vacation, taking it to a buddy's house, or just working portable in general. A couple of the options will also help you protect your favorite radio in the shack.
A huge shout out to @K8MRD Radio Stuff for his awesome video where he installed his Portable Zero rails on his 7300. That video is where I found out about them and what made me want to get a set for mine. I'm also going to get a set for my FT-857d.
The whole point of my channel is learning, and I definitely learned something else while making this video. my last two or three videos have not uploaded to RU-vid in 4K. Well after that driving me insane, I found that with my phone, if I insert a picture into my video by itself, it will downgrade the resolution. However, if I overlay a picture on a 4K video clip, it doesn't affect the 4K resolution. I ended up going through every clip trying to find the culprit. Now I know. In true Kyle Broflovski fashion; I learned something today.
Thank you for watching, and I hope you learned something too. 73!

Great video! I like the technique when you let the radio sit on the foam, and yeah the room on both sides is big issue. Thank you from Saudi Arabia

Same as me. 7300 in the original box on the seat in the car. Been keeping an eye out for some kind of case. Thanks for the ideas.

I hauled my 7300 around in its box so much that one of my friends finally told me I had to stop because I was one brake check away from either destroying it, or it destroying me. 😂 I'm glad I gave you some ideas. Thanks for watching!

What you can do to help pull the radio out is to add short pull string or straps that attach to the handles or the side pieces that stick out alittle.

That's a really good idea. I was thinking about doing something like that before I got the rails. Those turned out to be perfect for getting the radio out. They stick up out of the foam just enough. Thanks for the comment. 73!

I just received my rails for my Yaesu FT-991a and got them installed. I got mine from Portable Zero also, but black to match my radio & Heil Pro 7 headset. They cost around $87.00 with about $15.00 shipping. I wanted to protect the front end of the radio. When a radio cost over 1 grand, it's worth the money to protect it against any damage that could occur. Cheers & 73 from K9POW in eastern TN

I absolutely agree, and that's why I went looking for something like that, knowing I wanted to take my 7300 out into the field to operate. None of this stuff is cheap unless you find a good deal here and there. The black should look killer on your rig. I just went with the green because I thought it kind of gave it a vintage military radio kind of look. Thanks for the comment! 73!

I almost bought the feet kit too. I just don't ever really carry it or sit it down in a way where I thought they would be much of a benefit to me since it's usually always hauled around in its case. I'm sure they come in handy regardless. Thanks for the comment!

I use these "pluck & play" foam lined cases for many things, and to "beef up" the foam against wear/fraying/splitting from repeatedly removing and replacing equipment, I use Plasti Dip in a spray can to put a layer on all of exposed surfaces of the foam (both the top egg crate and bottom pluck- n-play) , once I've gotten the foam plucked out to its final configuration. That gives the foam a protective "skin" that locks the surfaces of the squares together and helps the foam to hold its shape better, it seals the porous surface of the foam from sponging up moisture and it keeps the edges of the foam along the "cutout" from fraying/breaking down over time and use. I typically put on 2-3 coats and one can usually do the job. Already have the rails, but thanks for the heads up about the 7300 screen protector... ordered. 73 KN6VMK

I'm really going to have to try this. So far, the foam has held up pretty well for me just using the case about once a week, but I know eventually my luck will probably run out. You're going to like that screen protector. You can't even tell it's there. Thank you for watching. I'm glad you got something out of it. 73!

Very nice, thank you. New to the 7300 I have an unrelated stupid question. After I have the scope on I can't figure out how to turn it off.

Stick around and don't be a stranger. My fathers name was Gary Wayne. Thank you for the comment. I usually leave the scope on, for the most part, but I think you can hit the exit button, or if you hit the menu button, you can also hit meter. That's the other screen I have up most of the time, and it's got a bunch of information. I tell you what, the next time I'm out, I'll run through some of it on video for you. Enjoy that awesome radio! 73!

What do you use to take the foam out to form the shape of the? Do you use a utility knife
@KC0JH_HAMateur_Radio
@KC0JH_HAMateur_Radio 7 месяцев назад
Nope. A knife isn't needed. It's all precut into squares. You literally just pluck it out into the shape you need.

Do the foam with radio upside down use the stand for easy removal from case
@KC0JH_HAMateur_Radio
@KC0JH_HAMateur_Radio 6 месяцев назад
That could certainly work, too. Without the rails, that would probably work. The rails I added stick up out of the foam just enough to where I can easily get a grip on them and get the radio out. If you used the stand too much for something like that, though, I could see it wearing out over time. Hey, thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment.

The rails look different on the Portable zero webpage and in fact these look more like what they have pictured as the 9700 version. Do you know if the 9700 version fits both? (I would think that they would). 73 Tom KC3QAC

Hi, Thomas. Thank you for watching and for the comment. It's possible that they could have changed something on their website since I ordered mine. I have not looked lately. The ones I ordered were for my 7300, and at the time, everything looked the same to me from what I ordered and what I received. Since the 7300 and 9700 are so similar in design and size, I would think they would be the same, but it would probably be a good idea to contact Portable Zero to make sure. I have no affiliation of any kind with that company besides simply being a customer and buying the product. 73!

@@KC0JH_HAMateur_Radio I figured it out and selected the flared version for my 7300. I may get a straight version for my 9700 so they will set easier side by side.
