IC-7300 vs K3s SSB

Tested at night on 40m with QRM from BC stations. All controls set equal. Identical speakers. Antenna switched A/B.
Keep in mind that I can fiddle with settings and make both rigs sound almost identical so this doesn't really prove anything.

Steve you're one of the few here on youtube trying to honestly compare radios.

Tough to tell a real difference as sometimes the K3s sounded like it had the edge, then the 7300 sounded better. Considering the price difference between these two rigs, the reception differences should be like night and day, but that's hardly the case.

Less scatter adjacent noise interference on the K3S.

It would be nice to take the Icom 7300 and see what the noise/DSP filters can do with a situation like you had on receive.

Hi. I just got my tech,. Will take the general in October. Will be shopping for a base rig? mostly ssb. I like the ICOM 7300 or Elecraft KX3...which is better all around? does the 7300 decode cw like the KX3. thank you for any feedback

Kinda new to HAM, so I hope you can help me a bit: what is "splatter"?
@collieclone
@collieclone 8 лет назад
Mike, welcome to the hobby. "Splatter" refers to the extraneous sounds you can hear (other than the voice you are listening to here). You can hear the voice fairly clearly, but there are also other seemingly random noises in the background that make 'copying' the voice more difficult. Next to this frequency there's an AM shortwave broadcast station, and that's where the splatter's coming from. 73, Colin, GM4JPZ

Good close-in performance by the IC-7300, considering the K3S has one of the most selective receivers currently available...and costs thousands of $ more. I'm a bit concerned about the IC-7300 fan and relay noise that you mentioned in your other video. I'm leaving on Wednesday for the UK to collect my new IC-7300. Thanks for the video's.

Go to 5:10 and listen to the K3 which is then quickly transitioned to the IC-7300. The winner is clear, as is the signal: the IC-7300 easily!

The 7300 may initially sound better, but I find the K3 does a better job of separating the voice signal from the background noise. It just stands out more and is easier to understand. I've listened to this and every other video I can find and the 7300 just has too much midrange, making it sound muddy. I wish I could play with the tone controls and lower the midrange to see if that improves it.
@dl6urk88
@dl6urk88 7 лет назад
You are right, to much midrange at the IICOM 7300. But - you can tailor it. Treble & bass to +2 & filter shape from soft to sharp and the voice signal sounds like the K3s

St8kout, I agree. The audio settings could be dialed in better to produce a deeper, warmer sound, similar to what was coming out of the 7300, only easier to copy. It was evident that the received signal started to sink into the noise on the 7300 as the QSO went on, yet it remained easy to understand on the K3.

Not really a true "apples-to-apples" comparison. Might suggest you employ the same rigorous measures used in hi-fi audio comparisons. As is, the audio "stereo" image is very different between the two radios, which makes comparison more difficult to judge. You should use a mono audio stream and use a single speaker. And make sure you match the levels exactly to within 0.1 dB. Otherwise people are naturally going to favor the "louder" signal. It might be better still if you did a double-blind test. Don't tell us which radio is which -- just switch between "A" and "B", and let the end-user decide which they favor. Then at the end tell us which is "A" and which is "B". Just a suggestion.

Now that you've had your 7300 for a while and assuming you kept your K3, which one do you prefer using? Asking because I have a K3 and considering adding a 7300. Thanks.

@@SoulStarLA I sold the K3 too, kept the 7300 & bought a new Kenwood TS590SG that I added the Kenwood TCXO too and couldn’t be happier. I ended up with two excellent radios, almost $2,000 leftover cash for my astronomy hobby and I’ve since bought the IC-9700 which compliments the IC-7300. The K3 was an excellent radio and one you could absolutely over-configure to death but I never did like listening to it as much as an I or K radio. It had a certain harshness to it that I never could configure out of it. I think the Elecraft was/& still is overpriced for what you get. I fell in love with the 7300 from the get go and it swiftly became my favorite HF radio. The 7300 had much more bang for the buck (I know...an overused descriptor for the radio but true) than any other radio on the market when I bought it. I bought the Kenwood about a week after I bought the 7300. Elecraft will always have their loyalists but I’m quite sure a good number of their customers are now former customers. I still get product info & a news letter from them but I haven’t kept up with what they’ve been up to.

@@TheYodastar Thanks so much for the feedback. I am beginning to feel the same way about Elecraft. They have been releasing their new K4 (which costs a small mint) for more than a year now without a radio seen yet (at least on RU-vid or by word of mouth). I like the 7300 and will probably pick either that up or a new Yaesu FT-DX101 MP.

More Top end distortion on the K3S. Sounds pretty bad as compared to the Icom. You can use the EQ to knock off the higher end distortion but this is typical of the Elecraft audio sections.

your opinion?
@n4lq

My opinion.....Not enough difference to matter. Since phone reception requires over 2 khz of bandwidth, selectivity is a non issue. You can pretty much make most modern radios sound the same. CW is a different story however.
