Yeah I had a game where I completely turtled with dozens of SAMS in Europe and still some ICBMs came through. 2 SAM per city aren't enough.

I'd add on that it seems like second strikes are more powerful since you know the location of missile silos as soon as they launch, so your first barrage could be targeted with the cheaper 1 megatons at enemy launching ability with a followup attack on population centers.

That is the most accurate thing you could say. The reason os because with a single 50 megaton, you can only hit one area of the city, but the blast is big. With 5 10 mgatons, it can hit different key points of the city. Also if the MIRVs seperate early enough, they could hit different cities. For example a single MIRV ICBM could possibly hit New York, Boston, and Philidelphia. O think.

I'm not playing this game (yet...anyway), just watching our bud Stealth...so, how many SAM sites would you have?

Exactly (to both previous comments). "Boosted fission" is a technology which exploits the interaction between fission and fusion. Fission relies on neutrons (the more the better) and releases high energy but far fewer neutrons than fusion (about 3 per mass 239 nucleus, let's call it 1:80). Fusion is the opposite and requires lots of energy. It releases more energy and a lot more neutrons (1 per two nuclei of mass 6 IIRC, 1:12). Therefore, fission can initiate fusion, which in turn releases extremely many neutrons, boosting fission considerably. Boosted fission devices have small pockets of lithium to improve fission reactions, and all newer nuclear weapons of the first-rate powers (US/UK/USSR) incorporate that design. Thermonuclear devices are the ones known as "hydrogen bombs" where a much more powerful fusion stage is ignited by a fission device (itself usually a boosted design), increasing the yield at least tenfold. These are usually coated with another commercial-grade uranium layer, which is fissioned by the extreme neutron output of the fusion reaction. About half the increased yield comes from that outer layer. Today, almost ALL nuclear devices of the US/UK/USSR are thermonuclear. The savings in weapon-grade material compared to the yield are so high that anything else can't compete, except at very low yield, and at that end of the scale, fusion devices are in use for another reason: because the neutron radiation provides more "kill power" at the same yield. BTW, those are often called "neutron bombs" - and their design wasn't meant to reduce explosive yield. The primary design criterion was to _provide maximum effect_ even if that meant sacrificing traditional yield in favor of neutron output.

Well the game isn't exactly realistic, as it just potrays all the continents as unified countries who can all match or catchup with each other technology wise. As you can imagine it would be quite stupid to play this game as a continent that has no way to build nukes for example.

It takes way longer to get nukes up and running in SupCom1 while having decent air defense and stuff It took him 30min to set up one hell of a battery here The thing is , in SupCom1, if one nuke hits, it's pretty much a knockout You're managing a continent here so you can take many many hits without instantly losing
