Ice Climber retrospective: A slippery slope for platforming | NES Works

This cooperative platformer occupies a somewhat unfortunate place in history: It attempted to build on the concepts of the original Mario Bros., but it arrived just before Super Mario Bros. set a new standard for run-and-jump action. It's an amusing and quirky game, but its awkward controls leave it completely overshadowed by the masterpiece that was to come.

I normally play this on NES Online. It's pretty fun! To reset whenever you lose bonus round for no reason

It's a pipe dream, but I wish Nintendo would go back and fix the jump mechanics of Ice Climbers. It's a fun game, but those jump controls make everything so much more painful.

I just really wish this game got an actual sequel. I know it's about as likely as an official Waluigi game, but one can dream...

+Nintenwhore The more frustrating part about it is that 9 times outta 10 it LOOKS like you should've landed on the platform which you tried to jump on. Even if 50% of Popo's sprite is above the platform he still somehow manages to fall through? How does that even work? Isn't the hitbox in the middle of the character? If you at least fell through and it looked like you should've fallen through it wouldn't have been so frustrating, but no, the game makes you think you can do it and then pulls the rug out from under you.

Chris Gorski yeah, like how they remade Mario Bros and put them as bonus games on all the super mario advance games

If they fixed the jump mechanics the game would be too easy, I guess

Ice Climber was the game, which came with my NES. Mastering that jump mechanic was tough, but I mastered it - back in the day. I still enjoy this game today, but I understand why people get frustrated.

Same for me in Sweden. I played this game atleast 1000 hours and still in my top 10 games for the console. I didnt know ppl struggle with the jumpmechanics, well my father did and he only play against me 10 minutes at the time or else he should kill me haha. Good times

@@andenxtcHaha! 😅 "Psycho Dad!". 😁 I didn't dare playing Ice Climber with my dad at the time, as that would make him loose his mind. 🤬💣💥 But he loved playing NES Tennis and some NES Soccer. I have great memories of us playing intense doubles matches against the CPU. 🎾🎾🥎🤖🤖 NES Tennis was one of the best Tennis games at the time. Better than what I played on Atari and Commodore 64. Ice Climber, however, could only be played with skilled or patient players. That jump mechanic could really make people frustrated and violent! 😄

the thing that angers me most about this game is not the meh controls but the fact that those little snowball guys are so decent and relatable. they're just trying to fix the holes in their floors and i'm supposed to keep beating them down.

forgot to mention that the topi used to be real life seals in the japanese versions. this can be also seen in the super smash bros melee trophy of topi in the japanese version.

The only time I played Ice Climber was WAY back when the NES was released and department stores had little demo stations set up with eight or nine carts plugged in that one could choose to play. I don't think I ever spent more than a few minutes at a time with Ice Climber because I never once mastered getting to the second screen on any mountain.

The Game & Watch Climber game had great game mechanics and was really fun to play. I've never tried Ice Climber though.

Since you mentioned the region changes in Baseball, I'm pretty surprised that you didn't mention the fact that the Topis were originally seals in the Japanese version.
@JeremyParish
@JeremyParish 8 лет назад
Yeah, sometimes I omit extraneous information if it doesn't quite fit within the framework I've written. There wasn't much to say about Baseball other than "it is an old baseball game by Nintendo." In this case, the localization changes were interesting but would have bogged down the episode. They'll get a mention in the book, though.

I love this game, I got it on my 3ds when the fact that the ics werent in smash became a problem for me and I wanted to play them again, I fell in love with the nes one, eventually the vs version came to the switch and I decided to get it and I love it even more, it controls so much better, I honestly do love the game and I would love to see it reimagined using its basic concept but overhauling everything else (except enemies) it would be great to see this game thrust into a new era

Have you hade a chance to try out the Squid Jump minigame from Splatoon? It feels like an evolution of Ice Climber in a lot of ways, & it's definitely more fun/way less frustrating.
@otaking3582

Nah, Squid Jump is basically one of those endless jumping smartphone games, except on a console. I've seen ones like it using Madoka Magica or Sonic characters.

I assume the eggplants show up due to the same Nintendo inside joke (basically a pun on "bonus" and the words in eggplant ('nasu') and stick ('bou') in Japanese) that gave us the eggplant wizard in Kid Icarus
@otaking3582
@otaking3582 7 лет назад
My interpretation is that it's a reference to Hatsuyume, the old Japanese belief that you'll have good luck throughout the year if the first dream you have in said year is of an eggplant, Mt. Fuji (which could be the mountain Popo and Nana are climbing), and a falcon (pterodactyls and falcons are the same thing, right?)

Ice Climber is an appealing game despite some truly baffling flaws, like how the whole game is based around players colliding with things above them but it seems as if the programmers never fully figured out how to do that. They should have made an upgraded Ice Climber sequel for SNES, or Game Boy/GBC, or even the Virtual Boy.
@quadpad_music

I think a Game Boy remake with enhanced controls and collision would have been relly cool. Shame it didn't happen, this cute little title actually holds a lot of potential to be a realñy fun experience.

IC's jumping nuance can be grasped I think to jump & then steer independently rather than together like SMB & beyond, maybe even jumping backwards.
@otaking3582

Despite it's steep learning curve regarding the jump mechanics and the fact that the game has no real ending, I still love this game and have willingly bought it multiple times on VC in the hopes that one day, Nintendo will actually give us a sequel.

The Ice Climbers are also playablr in Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube. Interestingly they are somewhat broken in Melee with a technique called Wobbling (which allows to grab an enemy and deal potentially infinite damage with a complex grab using both Ice Climbers).

Grew up playing Ice Climber with my brother. It did become a "crabs in a pot" scenario. Much fun, if not a little annoying with the jump physics.

Do you hack the intro screens for your intros or do you produce them some other way? Having hacked a couple of NES intro screens I know some are much, much more difficult than others (especially as you get into the later games).

I've always considered myself someone who had trouble getting into pre-NES console games and have always put it down to a bias based on when I got into the hobby. Maybe calling myself someone who has trouble getting into pre-Super Mario Bros. console games would be more apt, now that I think about it.

Just playing last night - which prompted me to seek out retrospectives on it. It's the jump control but what it up with the collision detection? You jump through (and can fall through) the last inch of solid floor like nothing. That's what's always been infuriating to me.

Great review, however something I want to note is that ice climber is not on Wii u virtual console. Just a small mistake but it left me a little disappointed when I went to buy it. If anyone wants this game and has a switch, the best way to get it is with Nintendo switch online, where you get it and tons of other nes games

Funny, I've personally never quite liked the jumping physics of SMB _that_ much. It's always felt to me like a constant struggle against the momentum and a relative lack of mid-air control of your jump arc. *But* I guess that makes sense since I didn't have to suffer through any of these pre-SMB platformers with their stiff controls, as the first video game I ever played was the SMB / Duck Hunt cart.

Ice climbers is the video game with the single worst controls/ feel I’ve ever played, clu clu land is up there. Super Mario bros and legend of Zelda show that it’s not the hardware and games from that era can feel and control well today. Ice climbers just fails in that regard IMO
