Here is a look at a few ice crushers, which were very popular tools among people who entertained frequently. People liked to have crushed ice on hand for cocktails, soft drinks and for creating "beds" of ice for hors d'oeuvres like shrimp cocktail and other things.
Some are manual, hand-powered crushers designed as wall-mounted or counter-top units. Others are electrified crushers of various designs that did all of hard work with the aid of motors and spinning blades.

I just bought a Swing-A-Way manual model from E-bay. LOVE IT! It is exactly like I remember my parents parties in the 60's! LOL! My job was to crush the ice. My hubbs has been crushing ice for my latest cocktail kick using the baggie + mallet combo. I went to E-bay and found a model like my mom had an it came it today and I love it! I wasn't sure how to use the coarse / fine on it and that is how I happened upon your video! Thank you!

Ice culture in the U.S. is fascinating. A friend of mine, Teddy, was from Poland. When he immigrated to the United States he didn't understand our obsession with ice cold water and drinks. But with time he began to appreciate the luxury of having ice for everything! After years he was finally able to go back to Poland for a visit. For the trip he brought his own ice tray! His mother shook her head and responded... "You Americans!!" He thought that was pretty funny!! 🇵🇱 I didn't see the ice crusher from the cottage in this collection. Did it stay with the cottage?
@cavalcadeoffood

Hi Greg! Yes, we are crazy for ice here in the USA! I take students to Paris every year (couldn't go this year, sadly) and you have to practically beg for ice, and then they give you a glass with two little cubes in it. I tell students in advance they are not going to like the ice but they are going to love the butter! :-) They just don't consume ice the way we do - much like your friend from Poland. I think our love of ice is tied to our love/addiction/excitement of sodas/pop/soft drinks. Pop (as we call it here in Michigan) is a much bigger deal in the US then it is in other parts of the world, primarily because of all the marketing from Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola over generations. The pop is usually shown with beads of condensation running down the bottle or can, or poured into a tall class filled with crystal clear ice cubes. Makes me want one just writing about it! The ice crusher from the cottage is a white Swing-A-Way, which I have. I showed the same model in the video, but with a brown/white paint job. Thanks!

My grandpa called it "Soda Water" he would ask us kids back in the 60's "What kind of soda water you want" being kids of the sixties we were slightly confused as we knew it as Soda's and usually by brand name... Coke, Pepsi, Hires root beer or flavor names Orange Crush, Nesbits Cream Soda and on and on. Later in life and a while after my grandpa's passing it dawned on me Why he referred to Soda's as soda water and that's because in his younger years in the 20's one of his first real jobs was as a "Soda Jerk" at a "Soda Fountain" where the Soda's were nothing but carbonated water, and flavored syrup hand mixed by the soda jerk Who filled a glass with the flavored syrup of the brand of choice and pulled the handle... Hence "Jerk" of the carbonated soda fountain and filled the glass and with a stir made your soda water right in front of your eyes for your Soda drink.

We had a GE electric ice crusher made in the 1970s. It was white plastic outside and it had a drawer at the bottom that pulled out from the front and raising the chute on the top started the motor running. I don't remember it having a coarseness adjustment. It was fairly quiet too. I also remember it dropping little black specks into the ice and at that point I decided to just use cubes from the icemaker.

Hi Jonathan! I never had an ice dispenser, although I had an Amana that had an automatic ice maker. Seems that the dispensers often break or get jammed up over time. I worked at a place years ago that had a big commercial ice machine and it made crushed ice - loved it! Thanks!

@@cavalcadeoffood I never had a dispenser either. Just a GE electric ice crusher. We did stay at a house at the beach that had one of those GE fridges with the crushed ice dispenser, but the water there was so bad that we couldn't stand the ice! I also worked at a place that had a Scotsman ice machine. They put a water filter on it and you should have seen what it trapped! Yikes! It was an old 1932 building and the plumbing was ancient.

I'm sure it was painful to Kev for that one ice CRUSHER to break one of its parts on camera. Those things have served their purpose and like most old things should be watched over and appreciated. I'm not that old yet at 63 I might even be a Bionic Boomer I hear... Kevin appears to be in the same ballpark and the directions for the Blender attachment ice CRUSHERS should have been used with the PULSE BUTTON only and not at any high speed because continuously, I do believe the teeth on the blender base are made of a semi hard rubber material so as not to break teeth off when meshing with the teeth at the bottom of the blender vessel if the blades contacted something it couldn't cut, I believe. I have a like new Rival "Vogue" Ice-o-mat I found quite a few years ago and had every intention of using it for cocktails but became concerned about possibly breaking it or putting wear on the black painted parts or corrosion of the plated parts so it sat until recently because my 93 year old mother has a new desire to have crushed ice to much on, I believe it's because of during a hospitalisation for stomach ailment they gave her crushed ice instead of liquid water to quench her thirst so the old Ice-O-Mat is back on the job as it was intended with good old fashion home made ice cubes from the refrigerator. I saw a lot of memories in the background especially the "Electric Skillets" designed for "Cooking Convenience" and the new break through cooking surface coating "Teflon" 😂 so I'll be back to see more by subscribing to your channel. 👍

@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood 3 года назад
Hi currentlyretro - getting smells off of things, especially when they have been in a smelly environment for a long time, can be difficult. Try wiping it down with a solution of baking soda and water, or a solution of vinegar and water. This might help cut the smell. Smoking usually leaves a layer of nicotine stains, so if you can clean that off it will get rid of some of the smell.

We have the first crusher you show, but it is a Maid of Honor from Sears. My mom had one, and rarely used it. We did find the ice crusher disk, with cover for our Sunbeam Mixmaster that goes on the slicer/shredder attachment. It came with a sad rusty shredder attachment, and I only bought it for the ice crusher disc, and cover....also rusty. I cleaned it up, and coated with mineral oil. I've only used it once to crush ice, for a shrimp cocktail buffet dish.... I was horrified when I saw some of the rust bleed through the ice once on the table.

I like this. I actually have the Ice-o-mat, but a later iteration of it as it's harvest gold instead like your white one. Not certain it was ever used, nor mounted on the wall as it was complete with original wall bracket still attached to the back. Anyway, found mine sans box at the Goodwill in I think 2010-2011 for my now late mother who loved crushed ice. I ended up with it back once she passed on in 2012 so it now finally hangs in my funky old kitchen. :-) I am now able to feature my house on my YT channel, John h Palmer (Little Haus, Big City) and the latest video is not even quite 3 minutes long but a quick intro to the channel. The previous vids are of weather related events that hit us, one was the major fires in the west and how it affected where I lived in Sept, and a year ago, also in Sept an unusual thunderstorm blew through one evening and resulted in some power outages and plenty of flashing lightning and booming thunder for much of the evening. Something we rarely get around these parts due to one missing ingredient, the high humidity that we got in spades that summer. More to come. Anyway, fun to see the variety of these ice crushers, both electric and manual models. I think I've seen the electric ones around from time to time. Dear friends of ours had I think a Daisy version hanging in their laundry room that was off the kitchen in their 1958 built house, complete with the original tubed Nutone intercom too. Don't know if they used it, but it may well have been from the previous owners that they bought the house from in 1969 and lived until Hank was too old to live there by himself and sold it and moved closer to his daughter in California. Both he and his wife have since passed on. I just recall it hanging just inside the laundry room when coming in from the garage. :-)
