@Blackjack Videos Lol how is that impossible? He graduated high school in '94, so he was nearly 19, which is a little older than usual. Meaning he would've been almost 13 when he finished 6th grade. Most people are 11-12 in 6th grade, so his story makes total sense. Many boys start listening to rebellious music at that age, I know I did. I got sent the principal's office for wearing a Mr.Hankey the Christmas Poo South Park shirt. After a kiss ass student called me out for it and told the my teacher. Apparently wearing literally shit on your shrit isn't up to the school's dress code. I had to turn it inside out or get sent home with a Saturday denton. Haha this priceless rap story just brought back funny memories for me.

That happened to me freshmen yr of high school. I wrote the lyrics down for Lodi Dodi by Snoop to give to my friend. When we got to class we had homework to turn in. As he got up I asked if he could turn mine in also. I gave him my homework and the lyrics. Well, he gave the teacher the lyrics and realized once he sat down he kept the homework. The teacher reads over it, comes over to hand my "homework" back and says, "very creative but off topic".

It's so strange how we talk around the reason why this story is interesting instead of addressing it directly. Suburban white kids are fascinated by the experiences and perspective of poor, urban, black men. He didnt say ohh i like the beat, it's nice to dance to, or the composition, the voice... He said i wrote out the lyrics by hand, like spelling words, to commit the words memory. What was it about those lyrics that was so intriguing or important to them? Then, the "education" system's response to the lived experience of people shared through art was just as Cube's music describes: demonized by instititions, essentially saying his existence, such as it is, is inappropriate... deserving of detention. This story is so rich, but sadly, because of our fear, wont be excavated for what it really has to offer.

I memorize lyrics the same way, I write them out and they just stick in my head. I don't copy them off the album, I will listen to the song and write the words as I go, I just memorized it that way better. I would compare what I wrote to the lyrics in print and make any adjustments if I got something wrong. I'm not a kid anymore, but I did that when I was a teen.

My older brother was an alternative rock grunge guy and knew I enjoyed gangsta rap so in 2000, I was 15 and he gave me a bootleg copy of N.W.A's greatest hits cd. Mom walked in the room when the song JUST DONT BITE IT was blasting through the speakers. I got grounded for 3 months........
