Five years ago I got threatened with arrest from some local police of the town I grew up in. Thee reason they gave me was because it's unsafe to ice fish. NOW, I'll admit no one every ice fished this pond. The pond has only one access point, a state trail from the main road, and it's surrounded by multi million dollar homes. So the homes owner have no idea about the conditions or even what the hell ice fishing is. That being said, the day in question, the ice measured from 14-17inches thick. Now, because I are up in this town, I knew 90% of the police officers In fact I grew up next to 4 officers, including the police chief. When I asked the officer if I didnt get off the ice what would happen, she explained that we can talk about it at the station. I said state law says I can fish here, she stated "I supersede state law". I told her, no need to take me to the station, I'll meet her there with paperwork in hand to file a complaint.... Iproceeeded to the station, at a high rate of speed, kicked the door open, filed the complaint. 3 months later... the complaint was "sustained". I promised that town that if the officer didnt get anymore complaints from anyone legally enjoying any outdoor sport within the town, I wouldn't file a lawsuit. SUCCESS so far. Hopefully I'll get the time this winter to travel back to the town/pond and do some ice fishing. Mainly I want to see if the police will respect my right to fish without being threatened with arrest.

I have fished many years on 2-3 inches of early season black ice in 3-4 feet of water near the shore. If you go through you might be cold and pissed but you're not gonna die. I was fishing in my pop up shack one year with a solid 8 inches of ice and a game warden who was new to the area and afraid of ice wanted me to walk about a quarter of a mile to the shore so he could inspect my license. I respectfully refused and told him I was not obligated to do so and yelled over my information to him then politely told him that he either gets used to going out on the ice or find a new vocation.

I respect the cops just as much as the next fellow "bootlicker", but I am not leaving a lake because you're not comfortable with the ice. There are things they can tell you and you have to obey but, that is not one of them.

They can’t legally do that. Just stay, say your fine, make him arrest you if it’s a problem.

That cop has no right to even come bother you about that. If anything it was his job to go talk to the people calling it in and explain what happens when you waste police recources.... Technically what he did is considered harassing a sportsman and I'm sure the dnr would be happy to explain that to him!

You paid for a fishing license and if your in legal bounds then it does not matter what others think. Your rights don't end at people's feelings.

Ya I found some safe ice just north of the cities finally just in the channel but I'll be trying the main body this week was safe to me but my buddy is nervous on three inches so we went back to the channel

When he was fishing next to the dock, you can see that there was water above the whole and that’s actually because the ice sagging from the weight of him. Kinda interesting

Would have just fished holes off the dock. A buddy and I did the sketchy 2" in Michigan. DNR jumped off the dock on to the ice. We were like BRUH..... Stay right there LOL. He was crapping. We to float suits. All good. But we were pounding right on the docks standing on the ice. Could have stayed on the dock. No wet electronics. Bloop.

If you could use a pick to stab through the ice you shouldn't be on the ice. The ice was cracking when you were hitting it, you could hear it stress and flex under your weight, but I think most importantly the ice was thin. Like not even considering the cops or the calls, just for your sake you shouldn't have been out there. You make the claim that clear ice is more structurally sound, and sure, compression strength is better but it flexes more and because of this and the fact you're stabbing the ice rather than drilling a hole, you're incorporating a ton of fractures where your weight would break the ice from. The act of you stabbing the ice is making it less safe. I don't think you're dumb or anything, I think you were misinformed and over-confident though. My worry would be you'd think the longer you don't fall through the ice in more shallow water then the same would apply in deeper water. I think you'd be lucky you didn't fall through and in deeper water, even if you float, you would have great difficulty pulling yourself on the ice near a break. Drowning isn't the only concern with falling in, it's cold and you would be wet. Hypothermia will still affect you and it is still dangerous. If I was in trouble I'd want people to call on it. It seems like they're ruining your fun, but we all have an ethical obligation to help others when we can. I deal with karens all day. They tell you, "it's my way or the highway!" And try to get something that is wildly unreasonable. Calling the cops to make sure someone is safe is not unreasonable. I think having someone try to explain the dangers to them and then the person still choose to do the activity absolves you of any guilt or liability. I think making sure they are at very least aware of the dangers is the most ethical decision.

Facebook update on a page or not, there's riskier ways to be fishing and you actually tested the ice with large rocks and did all the measures necessary for precautions in terms of ice fishing... :/ they aren't the game warden, so they can't exactly arrest you for anything illegal. You're not trespassing (its a public area), youre not harassing the locals (no one else is out there) AND youre literally minding your own business.

I had a lady throw rocks at me screaming I was a murderer because I was fishing " her property." It was county property. State police came and said the bridge on a state rd might be on her property and asked me To leave because she's upset. I said no thank you and can you call a DEC Officer because you obviously don't know what you are talking about. They said sure and sat in their vehicle for 40 min until DEC arrived and said mam go back in your house before you are arrested for harrasing an angler and he said I'm so so sorry sir she calls on every one I would fish here all day.. all some one has to do is call the cops on you and you are being messed with for no reason...
