2021 fishing report - Our 4 year old Lincoln tried our ice fishing bait while fishing for perch at Pineview! According to google the wax worms which look like maggots are safe to be eaten.
The kids managed a few perch through the ice and Keely broke the skunk smell. We caught 10 before the Keely and kids had to go. I stayed and caught 14 more, making our grand total 24 perch in about an hour and a half.
We were using various ice flies and colors 8”-10” below a small cast master for an attractant. The ice flies were tipped with wax worms and night crawlers.
I couldn’t tell you water depth as we were fishing without a sonar or fish finder, but we were right off the bottom by maybe an inch or two. The fish were very particular when it came to positioning of the fly on the on the bottom.
The perch definitely were active right when the bait hit the bottom, but were really responsive to jigging as well. If you weren’t getting any bites, a simple jig or two seemed to activate their feeding instinct.
The weather was nice with a slight overcast and 39 degree temperatures. Moon is almost full which I thought would negatively effect the fishing, but didn’t even seem to phase them.
All we caught were yellow perch, but did see a smallmouth bass right under the ice swim past.
All in all it was a fantastic afternoon fishing with the family and it was so much fun watching Keely fish with the boys. I don’t think there is anything better in life than watching you wife and kids enjoy the outdoors together with you.
