Was on my way home from Cape Cod to NJ and I decided to just stop off and do some holdover striper fishing but with just a little twist. 24" ice rod spooled with 4lb test vs striped bass.

Hey Rich; I know this is 2 yrs old I just saw this vid ,and as soon as I opened it I realized you were in my old neighborhood just moved to FLA. 4 yrs ago I fished that same spot for many years up and down that river as long as no ice present,,a lot of fun we used to do a Barbie/snoopy rod challenge see how big we can catch on those kiddie rods insane thanks for bringing me back fun memories

Hey my friend. That's definitely a challenge with that ultralight rod and 4 lb test. Something like that the tip of the rod does all the work you remember that you're good you know God bless be safe NYC

When I read the description I wondered if you went to a place near me then when the vid started I knew I was right. It is amazing just how many fish are packed into this area. I remember that year of stripers through the ice, I tried to get down there for that but couldn't get any time off from work that year Great vid my friend

That's awesome! Can't wait to get into holdovers up here on the North Shore of MA. I've never gotten one on the ice rod, but during the summer, the only tackle I'll use from boat or kayak is a 4'6" trout stick with #6 fireline. The sounds the reel makes when you hook up to a 20+ with good current... too much fun. I hate stressing them, though, so I put the heat to'em when I have too, especially in the rocks. The rod bends 90° between the handle and first guide and my buddies' eyes tend to pop out of their heads. Too good.

yeah it was really fun Idk what would of happened if I hooked anything over 25" it would of been a big battle. It all depends what kind of kayak you have and how comfortable you feel in the water. Ive used this kayak through some of the roughest kayak seas imaginable over and over again so I know a small river like this is like a kayaking in a bath tub. I would try first maybe in a small shallow pond and kinda build your way up. I call this river small but its actually a big river so it may be daunting to you because i've kayaked on some extremely big water's. For me this river is probably a 2-4 out of 10. For you two it might be like 5 to 8 all perspective of your experience.

yeah thats true I should that would be cool. I would have to anchor on the bow and stern but that would make jigging a little easier. The current against wind this day was tough.

that looked like fun, light tackle's a nice change up once in a while. when your in the kayak, do you perfer to wear a wet suit, waiters or plain waterproof pants? i see some guys with waiters going out a mile in the atlantic seems dangerous to me ,what do you think?

Hands down If im going out in the ocean in the cold water period i'll wear a wet or dry suit. If I'm fishing freshwater which I consider to be small bodies of water I'll usually wear waders if its raining or water proof pants but if its a really nice day and I know nothing is going to happen i'll wear just regular winter clothes to stay warm with layers of long John's and knee high water proof Seal Skinz socks with water proof pants over if its raining or snowing. Always remember though in the winter you want to wait for those flat calm days out on the lake, bay, or river. If its really windy I don't even bother. I don't mind rain or snow but wind can be a killer. Also when the water gets warmer don't forget to maybe try and practice capsizing and turning your kayak back over in the water an important skill to have.

Probably striped bass, but at heart I grew up multi species fishing with my dad so one day we were looking at the map for new freshwater honey holes for trout, bass, and walleye and the next day we were surf casting sandy hook for striped bass.
